Deconstructing the decade from 'The Shield' and beyond: Zap2it Rick's favorite episodes

7 hours ago | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

You can scarcely swing a dead cat lately without hitting some kind of best-of-the-decade list (even though, technically, the first decade of the 21st century doesn't end till next year).

Well, here comes another one. Rather than try to construct another best-shows-of-the-'00s list, though -- something that's already been done here, there and everywhere -- I decided to focus on individual episodes from 2000-09. Are these the flat-out "best" episodes of television over the past 10 years? Probably not. But these are the ones that stick with me, that I can still remember not just for brilliant lines or beautifully constructed plots, but for how I actually felt while watching them. They are, simply, my favorites.

Here's my list, in no particular order. What's yours?

"Final Grades" ("The Wire")

HBO sent critics the entire run of season four of "The Wire" before it premiered in 2006. I had watched the first »

Knight And Day Trailer Starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz

22 December 2009 2:18 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for Knight and Day, a film directed by James Mangold and starring Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise. Diaz plays a woman who is reluctantly linked to Cruise’s “man of mystery” as they become fugitives in this globetrotting action-comedy filled with shifting alliances and unexpected betrayals. The film used to be called Wichita and before that Trouble Man, but Knight and Day is almost certainly final now that it’s on a trailer.

The footage is not too different from that of the Entertainment Tonight spot we reported about yesterday, but more coherent due to the lack of Et interruption. I do like the framing device of Diaz explaining the craziness of her predicament to Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum Marc Blucas; I’m sure the trailer could have been much more generic. I still hate the title, but I might like »

Tom Hanks nears next Dan Brown adaptation ‘The Lost Symbol’

22 December 2009 7:54 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

While details are sketchy at best, Tom Hanks appears ready to play Robert Langdon again.

Hanks, who portrayed the professor of religious iconology and symbology in ’06’s The Da Vinci Code and it’s follow-up, ’09’s Angels & Demons, is expected to return to a third entry in the series, The Lost Symbol.

“[He is] all but ready to return to the character of Robert Langdon,” said a source.

According to CinemaBlend, Columbia Pictures is looking to fast-track the project for a 2012 release. There’s no official word from Hanks’ camp nor has director Ron Howard announced his return to helm a third film based on  Dan Brown’s popular series of novels.

The thing is, even though Angels & Demons was barely a blip here in America, it made $350 million internationally. There’s still tons of money to be made here and Columbia is willing to keep spending to make more movies. The Lost Symbol is coming. »

Dollhouse 2.10 "The Attic" Recap

21 December 2009 1:49 AM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Welcome to" The Attic"! Prepare to have your mind frakked…

What could possibly be one of the most complicated episodes of Dollhouse to date in terms of plot twists and technical jargon, "The Attic" delivered… and left me scratching my head. Bad thing? Hell No!!!! Let's get to it!

The Set Up

We pick up right were we left off with Echo being tended to by a female Attic representative, who is injecting tubes and wires into Echo. When the attendant leaves, Echo starts to spasm and flatlines!!!! When the female representative returns with another representative, the two remove the tubes and Saran Wrap from Echo and she awakes and dispatches both of them quickly. She breaks out her room and attacks the first person she sees for info on the whereabouts of Victor and Sierra. The guy tells her that they use real names in the Attic, which for Echo is Caroline Farrell. »

Review: Dollhouse - Stop-Loss

18 December 2009 11:05 PM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

(S02E09) Adelle has really begun her descent into Hell, hasn't she? I haven't seen a turn this bad since Angel lost his soul in Buffy Season 2. I wonder if she feels a twinge of jealousy that Sierra has won "Roger."

Enver Gjokaj should get his own show. Simply his "goodbye" to Sierra when he was about to be released had me in stitches. At the same time, it somewhat broke my heart when Sierra sat at the dinner table waiting for Victor to join her.

Admittedly, the show wasn't clear on the exact circumstances that brought Sergeant Anthony Ceccoli to the Dollhouse. Near as I can tell, he was a soldier in either Iraq or Afghanistan (or both) and he joined the Dollhouse to escape the war. He obviously underwent shellshock or some such trauma. Did he go Awol? Usually when people join the Dollhouse they're running from something. »

Buffy Heads to MTV and Logo

18 December 2009 12:05 PM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Those familiar chords, that signature font, that full moon. Yes, Buffy is coming back to TV. No, alas, not new episodes. Reruns of all seven seasons of the cult series are coming to the Viacom-owned channels MTV and Logo next year.

Talk about wanting my MTV! (Sorry, Logo, there’s no appropriate Dire Straits song to reference here, but I like you, too). Buffy the Vampire Slayer will air daily on both channels and mark the first time since 2008 the show has been on TV anywhere. It was previously syndication on FX from 2001 to 2008.

The show will launch New Year’s Day on Logo with an 18-hour marathon from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. Est. Then starting Jan. 4 it will air weeknights at 6 and 7 p.m. and late nights at 2 and 3 a.m. It will also show at various times on the weekends. [Full disclosure: Logo owns AfterElton.com, but trust me my excitement stems solely from my fanatical love of the show. I might or might not even own an action figure or two. I admit nothing.]

MTV will kick off their Buffy bonanza on Jan. »

Speculation has Gatt cast in the role of The Executioner, though the character is not confirmed to be in the movie.

Josh Cox (Last House on the Left) and Troy Brenna (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) has also joined the cast in unspecified roles.

‘Caprica’ Web Series? Eick: ‘It’s A Possibility’

17 December 2009 1:08 PM, PST | Tubefilter.tv | See recent Tubefilter News news »

Battelstar Galactica's follow up prequel series Caprica has pushed out their full pilot online (above) before its series premiere Jan 22nd on SyFy, and it reminds us that this may not be the only time the show flirts with web viewers. Streamy Award winner Jane Espenson is behind the series, along with fellow Battlestar writer Ronald Moore. Tubefilter's Drew Baldwin spoke with creator and Executive Producer David Eick ealier this year at the Caprica premiere screening at PaleyFest09, and asked whether we can expect a Caprica web series, he said, "it's a possibility." Arguably, this isn't much to go on. It's probably just a good excuse to show our readers the Caprica pilot. Battlestar did release a well-received web companion series—The Face of the Enemy—which picked up a Streamy last year, so this wouldn't be new ground for this group. We do hear that SyFy is looking to »

David Sedaris' 'Santaland Diaries': Who's your dream Crumpet?

16 December 2009 9:30 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Nicholas Brendon is currently in the midst of a sold-out run of The Santaland Diaries -- the one-man stage telling of David Sedaris' gut-busting tale of his time working as an elf at Macy's -- at L.A.'s Blank Theatre Company. I saw Timothy Olyphant play the part of David/Crumpet in New York in 1996, and I can still picture the perfectly pissy look on his face. Who would you kill to see perform it? I'm thinking Jim Parsons would do a nice delivery of the following: "Today, I witnessed fist fights and vomiting and magnificent tantrums. »

'Glee,' 'Vampire Diaries' to kick off Paley Festival

15 December 2009 3:00 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Gleeks and vamp fans unite!

Fox's four-time Golden Globe-nominated "Glee" and The CW's breakout hit "The Vampire Diaries" are the first two shows to be announced for the William S. Paley Television Festival in the new year.

"Glee" gets the honor of kicking off PaleyFest2010, which runs from Feb. 26 through March 14 at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills. It will be the first public appearance by the cast (other than the limited Comic-Con panel), so fans are encouraged to keep an eye on ticket sales starting Jan. 20.

Generally the evening's festivities begin with watching an episode of the show and then opening up the floor to a fan Q&A. You know, "Glee" cast, it wouldn't hurt to do a teensy little ditty for the fans while you're there. Just sayin'.

So far there are no details exactly which cast members will be on hand for each show.

Top Ten Tuesday: Worst Movies of 2009

15 December 2009 1:00 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Another year has come and nearly gone, which means it’s once again that time of year to reflect on the cornucopia of movies released in theaters over the last 12 months. While we’re all eager to find out what movies rank amongst the best of 2009, the Movie Geeks prefer to start with the bad news and finish with the good news. So, this week we pull all the stops and lay out the Bottom Ten Worst Movies of 2009.

10. Whiteout

There’s pretty much only one thing this thriller (in name only) has plenty of.  White.  It’s not exciting.  It’s not suspenseful.  It doesn’t make you care one iota whether anyone lives or dies.  It’s really one of those movies that, at the end of the day, is just a waste of space, time, and money.  When your “thriller” gets its culminating action scenes and suspense »

Best New Series

"Chew" (Image)

As is the case with cooking, comic books require the right blend of ingredients in order to fully flourish. Thankfully, that's exactly what John Layman and Rob Guillory's "Chew" specializes in. The series focuses on Tony Chu, an Fda agent who solves crimes by gleaning psychic impressions from anything he eats. Readers embraced the book's food-centric premise by sending "Chew" back into the kitchen for multiple sell-outs and reprints. If the new year brings a similar level of quality, »

Thor Writers To Develop Futuristic Vampire Pic Damn Nation

15 December 2009 8:27 AM, PST | FusedFilm | See recent FusedFilm news »

Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz who were brought to assist on later drafts of the Thor script for Marvel, are now signed on to script Damn Nation, a futuristic vampire project for Paramount.

Set in a U.S. evacuated after an attack from “inhuman nocturnal predators,” the comic tells the tale of the survivors after the government has been forced to relocate to London while scientists search for a solution.

Dark Horse Entertainment is producing the adaptation, which is based on a comic by Andrew Cosby and art by Jason Alexander.

Just another vampire apocalypse film. We can’t get enough of those can we? The relocation part seems interesting, especially the Us relocating to England. In the midst of trying to survive vamps, that type of political hankering is interesting.

High Definition: Joss Whedon's Dollhouse Finally Hits Its Stride—Just In Time For Cancellation

15 December 2009 12:00 AM, PST | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

If Fox had canceled Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse halfway through the show’s first season, I wouldn’t have shed a tear. It looked like the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog had finally created a dud. The concept was intriguing, but the episodic adventures of a gorgeous body that could be filled with whatever personality her handlers created for her were a little silly and a lot creepy. The main Doll, Echo (Eliza Dushku), would go on engagements as a hostage negotiator, a bodyguard or, most often, a lover, and it felt a lot like »

Leonardo DiCaprio will star with Mel Gibson. who has also signed on to direct an untitled period drama about Viking culture based on a script from William Monahan.

The principals confirmed the project but would not divulge many details. DiCaprio, who has long been fascinated by Viking culture, will play one in a storyline “that will be as unsparing” as Gibson’s other period directing efforts, BraveheartThe Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto.

“This will be an awe-inspiring story, created with some of the industry’s finest cinematic talent, and I am just over the moon to be making this with Mel, Leo and Bill,” producer Graham King said in a statement.

I have become fans of both actors and are really looking forward to this film as Gibson track record as a director is good and DiCaprio hasn’t made a bad film in awhile. We look forward »

Preview: 'Angel' #28 Brings 'Fables' Creator Bill Willingham To Joss Whedon's Vampire Universe

14 December 2009 11:01 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Sure, a lot of attention's been paid to Sunnydale's favorite vampire slayer, Buffy, but she's not the only character from Joss Whedon's "Buffy-verse" to make a successful transition from television to comics. Idw Publishing's ongoing "Angel" series continues this week as a new writer begins scripting the adventures of Angel, the vampire with a soul (played by David Boreanaz in the television series), and his demon-slaying crew.

"Fables" creator Bill Willingham jumps on board as the series' regular writer with issue #28, kicking off a six-part arc titled "The Crown Prince Syndrome." The storyline promises to explore Angel's new celebrity and the problems it creates — including a distinct lack of quality brooding time.

Idw has provided Splash Page readers with an exclusive first look at "Angel" #28, featuring a story by Willingham, interior art by Brian Denham and covers by Denham, Jenny Frison and David Messina.
