Oscar winner Frances McDormand (Fargo (1996), Mississippi Burning (1988), Lone Star (1996)) has been named to receive the Independent Vision award at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah next mointh. In a statement, festival program director Geoffrey Gilmore said that "in the independent film world ... no one epitomizes what the nature of artistry is more than" McDormand. Meanwhile, the "counter" festival, Slamdance, announced that it had selected 12 features and 18 shorts for screening at its concurrent fourth meeting in Park City.
