If you caught Carole King performing with Sara Bareilles at the 2014 Grammys, you’d know just how timeless an artist King and her work are. Her Diamond graded pop-album Tapestry from 1971 is a masterpiece, and one of the best selling albums of all time. And though today King maybe doesn’t get the indie cred as some of her ’70s, singer/songwriter female contemporaries like say, Joni Mitchell, that may be about to change.
Broadway World was the first to report that Sony has just secured the rights to adapt the Broadway hit Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, along with King’s life rights, her songwriting collaborators’ life rights, and the rights to many of her hit songs including “The Locomotion,” “One Fine Day,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “So Far Away,” “I Feel the Earth Move,” and “You’ve Got a Friend.”

She’s the voice of a generation and Taylor Swift was looking forward to playing Joni Mitchell in an upcoming biopic based on the book “Girls Like Us.”
Having begun talks back in 2012, it seems the “Shake It Off” songstress won’t get a chance to take on the folk singer role after all, as Joni herself has put an end to the production.
Mitchell told The Sunday Times, “I squelched that! I said to the producer, ‘All you’ve got is a girl with high cheekbones. It’s just a lot of gossip, you don’t have the great scenes.’”
Joni continued, “There’s a lot of nonsense about me in books: assumptions, assumptions, assumptions.”...

The haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate! First Bette Midler dissed Ariana Grande, then Joni Mitchell dissed Taylor Swift! In April 2012, it was reported that the "Blank Space" singer was in talks to portray the folk legend in the big-screen adaptation of Girls Like Us, a book focusing on the impact of Carole King, Mitchell and Carly Simon. Swift was never officially offered the role, and as the pop singer told Time that year, "The thing about movies that I've learned is—I've been reading scripts for five years, and you just don't know what ones are going to get greenlit and which ones aren't, so I can't talk about it unless it's the real thing." Swift...

It's probably better off this way. Joni Mitchell made her sentiments about Taylor Swift clear this weekend when she told The Sunday Times that the pop star will not be playing her in any movie. In 2012, Swift, 24, was reportedly in talks to play the legendary folk artist in the film adaptation of the biography Girls Like Us, which tells the stories of legends Carole King, Carly Simon, and Mitchell. "I squelched that," Mitchell, 71, said of the biopic. "I said to the producer, 'All you've got [...]...

Years ago we thought the book "Girls Like Us," a triple biography of Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon, was going to be turned into a movie with Taylor Swift as Joni Mitchell. I sort of rooted for this. I voted for Lake Bell as Carly! Even if Taylor Swift's acting chops are unconfirmed, those three singer-songwriters are so important and timeless that I wanted a big-screen reintroduction to their greatness. But as Joni Mitchell just confirmed with UK outlet The Sunday Times, the movie isn't happening because she put a stop to it. Here's her amazing quote about the situation: "I squelched that! I said to the producer, ’All you’ve got is a girl with high cheekbones.’ It’s just a lot of gossip, you don’t have the great scenes. [...] There’s a lot of nonsense about me in books. Assumptions, assumptions, assumptions." Oh, Joni.

After a long spate of supporting performances in films such as "Juno," "The Darkest Hour," "Being Flynn," and most recently "Dredd," the talented but under-utilized Olivia Thirlby is finally getting leading roles in which she can truly shine, starting with this week's "Nobody Walks" (read our review here). Playing an artist/film director who nobody seems to be able to resist, the actress displays an inner magnetism that should get her cast in more projects to come. (On the wish list: potentially portraying Carole King in "Girls Like Us.") "It's so mysterious that you even know about that one!" she teased when The Playlist asked about her recent audition. "I'm actually not comfortable talking about parts before they become real. I don't want to jinx it." Thirlby admitted that she's "pretty picky" about the parts she goes after, but her selectivity isn't about...

"Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned," and scorned Demi Moore is allegedly holding on to the fury.
Last November, Demi Moore split from husband Ashton Kutcher after six years of marriage when a very public cheating scandal ruined their relationship. Although Kutcher has moved on with former "That '70s Show" co-star Mila Kunis, new reports claim that Moore is still "jealous and frustrated."
Some close to Moore say that the 49-year-old actress hasn't fully recovered from her broken marriage. "Her friends aren't convinced she's all better," a source tells People magazine. One source says that she is "jealous and frustrated," while another claims "What was humiliating was having her husband cheat on her in such a public way."
Kutcher was caught in a cheating scandal with 22-year-old Sara Leal last October. The pair reportedly hooked up on Kutcher's sixth wedding anniversary with Moore.

Taylor Swift as Joni Mitchell? Maybe!
According to Variety, the pop star is hoping to play the famed singer-songwriter in "Girls Like Us," a drama about Mitchell, Carly Simon and Carole King.
Before you get too excited (or too infuriated, depending on your feelings for TaySway), consider these caveats: Swift hasn't been offered the role just yet, and the movie itself doesn't have a green light. Per Variety, it's "tentatively skedded" to start this year (trade-speak, Ftw). If this casting madness sounds familiar, that might be because you remember the blog Crazy Days and Nights reporting Swift was attached to play Mitchell back in February.
Swift has long sought an entrance into feature films. She was reportedly on the shortlist of actresses to play Eponine in Tom Hooper's highly anticipated adaptation of "Les Miserable," along with Lea Michele and Scarlett Johansson. Unfortunately for Swift, the role ended up going...

Straight from a source reporting to our buds over at The Playlist, we get word that Sony has made the adaptation of the book Girls Like Us a “priority project” and are currently seeking a screenwriter to convert the book for the screen. The Playlist’s source also notes that the studio is seeking a female writer for the project, which makes sense given the subject matter of the book, but could limit the pool of potential scribes for a project that, I must say, doesn’t seem too suited for a big screen take.

Carly Simon during the photo shoot for her first album cover. By Peter Simon. For just as many years, a question rivaling that of (before Vanity Fair solved it) “Who is Deep Throat?” has been: Who is Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain” about? You know, the man who “walked into the party like he was walking onto a yacht”--the song that taught young people in early 1973 that there was the (conveniently “yacht”-rhyming) verb, “gavotte” and, far less elegantly (but far more endearingly and memorably) informed us that a cup of coffee could contain clouds. Carly herself has enjoyed not answering that question. “It doesn’t really matter who it’s about,” she told me, when I interviewed her for my book, Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon--and the Journey of a Generation, but she did tell me details of the song’s composition,...
