Chuck Russell ("The Scorpion King," "Eraser") is working on a 3D re-imagination of "Arabian Nights." He will direct the film from a script he co-wrote with Barry P. Ambrose.
The $70 million production is set to begin in April.
The new twist? According to Variety, the story follows a young commander who, after his king is killed in a palace coup, joins forces with Sinbad, Aladdin and his genie to rescue Scheherazade and her kingdom from dark powers.
So Sinbad and company will take a backseat for a young commander. Hhhmmmm...
Russell wants to take you on a magic carpet ride! He says, "Through the use of a new generation of visual technologies, we will be able to quite literally take audiences around the world on a magic carpet ride."

Another day, another remake. Today I am sad to report that the 1942 classic Arabian Nights is going to be ravaged in a $70 million remake being directed by Chuck Russell. Variety reports that Russell, whose credits include A Nightmare on Elm Street: Part III, The Blob, The Mask, Eraser, and The Scorpion King, will be "reworking" Arabian Nights into a 3D film with a "new spin on the classic" story. In this version, we will follow a young commander who, after his king is killed in a palace coup, joins forces with Sinbad, Aladdin and his genie to rescue Scheherazade and her kingdom from dark powers. Sounds like it'll be a good time.
"Through the use of a new generation of visual technologies, we will be able to quite literally take audiences around the world on a magic carpet ride," Russell said. I hope that quote gave you chills. I

A New adaptation of the Eastern folk tales collection Arabian Nights is on its way to the big screen - and, in line with the growing trend, it will be in 3D.
Chuck Russell, who co-wrote the script with Barry P. Ambrose, is to direct the fantasy adventure.
He previously helmed 1987's A Nightmare on Elm Street 3, the 80s remake of The Blob, The Mask, Eraser and Scorpion King.
Variety reports that Arabian Nights has a $70million budget and will be financed by Inferno Entertainment, with production set to begin in April.
The story follows a young commander who, after his king is killed in a palace coup, joins forces with Sinbad, Aladdin and his genie to rescue Persian queen Scheherazade and her kingdom from dark powers.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is well on the way, and, it seems, has created a bandwagon of sorts. Variety reports that Chuck Russell is busy prepping a 3D adventure based on The Arabian Nights. Good news everyone! It's a timeless classic of world literature, coming to the screen from the director of Eraser!Russell has co-written the script with newbie Barry Ambrose. You'll be disappointed to hear that it's not an ambitious Reduced-Shakespeare-Company-style portmanteau comprising 1001 stories, but "a new spin", in which a young military commander joins forces with Sinbad, Aladdin, and the Genie of the Lamp, to rescue storyteller Scheherazade from "dark powers" that have murdered the king.Russell also directed The Mummy spinoff The Scorpion King, which is a fair idea of the territory this will be treading, we'd assume (although on a larger scale). Budgeted at $70m, shooting starts in the spring.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Governator: Celebrating Arnold Schwarzenegger

Before Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger presided over the state of California, he was an actor. If you're old enough to read this, then you probably know that. After all, Schwarzenegger wasn't just an actor... he was The actor. The one-time Mr. Universe spent much of the '80s and '90s as Hollywood's go-to action hero. He never quite managed to shake the thick Austrian accent, but that was in many ways part of the charm.
Today is Governor Schwarzenegger's birthday. He turns 62 and looks pretty much like you would expect a 62-year-old former Mr. Universe and former action star to look: fit as a fiddle. In honor of the Governator's special day, I'd like to take a moment to look back at some of the significant things he left us with before turning his attention from acting to politics.

Big Screen ‘T.J. Hooker’ Adaptation in the Works

According to Variety, the latest tv show to get the big screen treatment will be none other than the William Shatner mid-eighties police drama T.J. Hooker. No, that’s not a typo, I said T.J. Hooker. Is this another sign of the pending apocalypse or further proof that Hollywood has completely run out of original ideas? Perhaps both.
In case you were not a fan of the original series or its star William Shatner, the show centered on Shatner’s character, a no-nonsense police sergeant who, among other things, bossed around the young and beautiful Heather Locklear, the young and hunky Adrian Zmed and occasionally caught some bad guys in the process. Producing the action comedy will be David Foster, Ryan Heppe and series creator Rick Husky.
According to the article, producer Heppe is gung-ho about the adaptation saying: “The series was the poster child for cop TV shows in the 1980s with great stunts,

Someone stop the madness! Yet another '80s property is being prepped for the big screen: the William Shatner-fronted cop show T.J. Hooker! According to Variety [1], Chuck Russell (The Blob, Eraser, The Scorpion King) is in talks to direct, with the screenplay being penned by Brent Maddock and S.S. Wilson (Tremors, Short Circuit, Ghost Dad). Hey wait a minute... maybe I'm interested in this after all.
I must admit, I don't remember much about the TV show, which may have been just slightly ahead of my time (it ran from 1982 to 1986). It was produced by Aaron Spelling and in addition to the Shatman it also starred Heather Locklear, Adrian Zmed, James Darren and Richard Herd. Shatner played Thomas "T.J." Hooker, a detective who returned his former position as a beat cop after his partner was killed. The movie will maintain the blend of action and comedy that the series was known for,

While some television shows from the past are being resurrected and updated for today's TV viewers, others are headed for the big screen. The latest one to make the cut: "T.J. Hooker," the 1980s crime drama series produced by Aaron Spelling.
Variety reports the concept of the series will be repackaged into an action comedy, with Chuck Russell in talks to direct the project. Russell's credits include "The Mask" and "Eraser."
The original series starred William Shatner as Sgt. T.J. Hooker and focused on his adventures with his partner Vince Romano (Adrian Zmed). Heather Locklear co-starred in most of the show's 90 episodes.
Brent Maddock and S.S. Wilson ("Wild Wild West") will write the script for the big-screen version, which apparently focuses on the relationship between Hooker and his dad. No actors are in talks yet.
No word yet on when you can plan on getting 'hooked' in theaters.

You've got to be kidding me, this is actually being made? Variety announces that the 1980's TV show "T.J. Hooker" that starred William Shatner as a no-nonsense patrol sergeant is headed to the big screen as a feature action comedy. I guess this is what happens in Hollywood when Fox's A-Team movie starts getting buzz. If this wasn't already bad, just wait, it gets worse. Chuck Russell, who last directed The Scorpion King as well as Eraser, The Mask, and The Blob before that, is in talks to direct a script written by Brent Maddock and S.S. Wilson. It's not likely that William Shatner will return in any way, so don't get your hopes up.
The "T.J. Hooker" TV series first debuted in 1982 on ABC and ran for five seasons, the last on CBS. "The series was the poster child for cop TV shows in the 1980s with great stunts,

Star Trek was just reborn, and now William Shatner’s other big TV franchise is getting its shot at the cinema screen.
Chuck Russell – yes, the man behind Eraser and The Scorpion King – is chatting with producer Ryan Heppe about directing the pic.
Rick Husky, the man who created the series in the first place, is still in control of the rights, though that’s not necessarily your guarantee of quality.
And it’ll be an action “comedy”, which has us worrying that it might get turned into...

Blu-Ray Review: High Definition Makes ‘The Rock Collection’ More Appealing

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
Chicago – Dwayne Johnson, the artist formerly known as ‘The Rock,’ has a new movie hitting theaters next month, “Race to Witch Mountain,” so the time seems right to revisit the action extravaganzas that almost made this former wrestler a massive star with the release of three of his early films on Blu-Ray in “The Rock Collection”.
A spin-off of “The Mummy,” “The Scorpion King” was the film that started it all for The Rock back in April of 2002. Directed by Chuck Russell, “The Scorpion King” is a loud, nonsensical action movie that co-stars Kelly Hu and Michael Clarke Duncan.

Set 5,000 years ago in Gomorrah, The Rock plays Matthayus, the most fearsome warrior of the ancient world, a leader hired to kill the beautiful sorceress (Kelly Hu) who has helped the evil warlord Memmon (Steven Brand) rule with an iron fist. Matthayus kidnaps the sorceress to
