The Notable Films of 2010: Part Seven

29 December 2009 7:16 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Mother and Child

Opens: 2010

Cast: Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington

Director: Rodrigo Garcia

Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.

Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.

The few criticisms levelled at the film were toward some pacing and credibility issues in the last act, but otherwise praised it for not »

The Last Airbender

Opens: July 2nd 2010

Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel

Director: M. Night Shyamalan

Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.

Analysis: Its been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan who started it as a household name with labels of a moodern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".

Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit cartoon series »

Hippie Hippie Shake

Opens: 2010

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby

Director: Beeban Kidron

Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.

Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.

Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence »

Georgia

Opens: 2010

Cast: Val Kilmer, Andy Garcia, Rupert Friend, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Johnathon Schaech

Director: Renny Harlin

Summary: An American journalist, his cameraman, and a Georgian native get caught in the crossfire of the five-day Russia-Georgia conflict in August 2008, and then have to deal with their obligation to be impartial.

Analysis: A timely parable on war, or Hollywood propaganda filmmaking at its worst? Wherever it goes, especially in Europe and the former Soviet states, "Georgia" will cause a lot of talk and controversy as the incidents depicted are still so fresh in many's minds. Like all topics of the sort, it'll also have its strong supporters and detractors having opinions on the film long before a frame of footage is screened anywhere.

Shot on-location in Tbilisi, the project also marks a potential return to form for Finnish director Renny Harlin. Given the right material the skilled action director delivered three »

Blunt promises witty, smart 'Gulliver'

19 December 2009 7:40 AM, PST | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Emily Blunt has promised that her forthcoming movie Gulliver's Travels will be a "witty and smart" comedy. The actress, who appears alongside Jack Black in the movie, has reassured fans of Jonathan Swift's novel that the film adaptation will be enjoyable for adults and children alike, Stv reports. The 26-year-old said: "People who are very loyal to the book I'm sure will have their qualms about the fact that we've made this a kind of romping comedy. But it's still very funny. "I love Gulliver's Travels because it's really smart. It's not fart jokes. You know what I mean? It's not (more) »

Dinner for Schmucks

Opens: July 23rd 2010

Cast: Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis, Bruce Greenwood, David Walliams

Director: Jay Roach

Summary: A renowned publisher encourages his friends to invite the most pathetic guests possible for their weekly dinner party. Just as they find the most pathetic man yet, the host is injured and ends up trapped with the man all night long.

Analysis: A remake of director Francis Veber's 1998 César award-winning "Le Diner des cons", 'Schmucks' is one of the highest profile comedies of next year with one of the strongest casts for the genre in recent memory. It also marks the return of "Austin Powers" and "Meet the Parents" helmer Jay Roach who has produced several films in recent years but hasn't directed since 2004's "Meet the Fockers".

The question now lies not in the performers or director but the material itself and whether a Gallic comedy can »

Case 39

Opens: January 1st 2010

Cast: Renée Zellweger, Jodelle Ferland, Ian McShane, Bradley Cooper, Kerry O'Malley

Director: Christian Alvart

Summary: A family services social worker thinks she has seen it all until she meets her newest, most mysterious case - a troubled 10-year old girl whose parents try to kill her. The social worker decides to take her in herself until the right foster family comes along.

Analysis: Despite the presence of promising German director Christian Alvart ("Pandorum"), 'Case' has sat on a shelf since late 2006 and is finally being quietly shuffled out this year for one very good reason - it stinks. Having opened in Australia a few months back, reviewers utterly savaged the film as both incredibly dumb and utterly ludicrous. Lead star Renee Zellweger also scored personal criticism to a level rarely seen in film reviews outside of comments about Nicole Kidman's 'more alien than the »

The 'Devil Wears Prada' actress – who stars as Princess of Lilliputia in new movie 'Gulliver's Travels', which is based on the classic novel by Jonathan Swift – has taken up the guitar-like instrument after seeing her two co-stars Jack Black and Billy Connolly playing it on set between takes. Emily, 26, claims she is getting good and serenades fiance John Krasinski with her favourite Otis Redding song. She said: "I can play 'Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay' and that Beatles song, 'When I'm 65' or is it '64'? Whatever it is. I like that one. Next I'd like to learn 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' on the ukulele." Emily is not the only star to have recently taken up the ukulele. Zac Efron, 22, has started to learn the instrument after becoming interested in it while shooting his new coming-of-age movie 'Me And Orson Welles'. He said: »

'Tron Legacy' Opening December 17, 2010

3 September 2009 4:09 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

So it looks like The Green Hornet can't get out of its own way. On the same day it was announced that the film is now underway, Disney announced that Tron Legacy will open on the same day Hornet just moved to - December 17, 2010.

Initially, the film - a sequel removed from its inspiration by nearly 30 years - was slated for a late 2011 release, but once production began and it became clear that this was a movie people were very excited about, the date shifted to sometime in 2010, as indicated by the Comic Con trailer.

This helps it avoid The Hobbit, and there's nothing particularly overwhelming about the line-up of Green Hornet, Smurfs, and Yogi Bear on the 17th of December next year. Also of note is the schedule surrounding Tron, which includes Voyage of the Dawn Treader and Gulliver's Travels. So really: Nothing much. »

Thieves have stolen thousands of pounds worth of filming equipment from the legendary Pinewood Studios in Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire, reports The Daily Telegraph. Police said that the intruders gained access to the facility by breaking padlocks on the back gates, smashing windows and removing doors from hinges. "They stole various specialist cameras and lenses which are worth a lot of money," said detective constable Sebastian Wilson. "They have also stolen a Sony Srw 5000, a device which converts footage into high definition format and which alone is worth £65,000 pounds." Among the items reported missing were cameras being used to film Gulliver's Travels, starring (more) »

'Year One' Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

We take you back to the beginning of time — or at least the start of the film's production.

Jack Black and Michael Cera in "Year One"

We could offer you our own one-line plot description for "Year One," a high-concept comedy set in biblical times, but we prefer star Jack Black's pithy take: "Just two dudes wandering through early civilization."

The dudes in question are Black and Michael Cera, two buddies living in an ancient hunter/gatherer society, trying to hit on ladies and prove their manliness to the tough guys in the village. Neither of these pursuits are working out too well, and after Zed bites into some forbidden fruit and accidently burns everyone's huts down, the two friends set out on an epic journey through time, the Bible and the very limits of PG-13 comedy.

Jason Segel Plants a Wet One on Emily Blunt

2 June 2009 12:30 AM, PDT | Celebuzz.com | See recent Celebuzz news »

We were a little confused about this picture of Jason Segel giving a big smooch to Emily Blunt at first. One, as far as we know, Segel and Blunt aren't a couple. Two, last we heard from I Love You, Man actor Segel, he was extolling the virtues of man-on-man kisses. But, as it turns out, Segel and Blunt were just filming a scene for the upcoming Gulliver's Travels in London. Yet another remake of Jonathan Swift's classic tale, Gulliver's Travels—slated for a 2010 release—stars Jack Black as titular traveler Lemuel Gulliver, Segel as his best buddy Horatio, and Blunt as the Princess. »

Cruise! Diaz! Spy Comedy! 'Wichita' (?!)

28 May 2009 2:35 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Don't hold your breath, but Tommy Boy may have chosen his next project. Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz "are in advanced negotiations" to star in an action comedy currently titled Wichita, according to Variety. Cruise is notoriously indecisive cautious, though, so it's not a go until the cameras start rolling.

If all goes well for 20th Century Fox, the idea is to throw the movie into the summer 2010 maelstrom. Fox already has The A-Team, Gulliver's Travels, and Predator set for the season. The bigger question is how Cruise would handle the role. The character he would play is described as "a secret agent who pops in and out of the life of a single woman." The movie is described as having "several action scenes," so it sounds like it would lean more on comedy and romance. The sole time Cruise has tried to be funny and romantic was his Academy »
