Textile Tragedy
RodReels-213 May 2001
This fascinating at times, but not quite successful, documentary recounts tragedies which occurred primarily in South Carolina during the depression years when unions attempted to organize in the textile mills. It's annoying that so many seem to be willing to tell their stories, and yet the filmmakers have a difficult time weaving those stories together in order to give the viewer a coherent narrative. Unless you have a good understanding of the historical events described here, this film is not likely to give you one. It can give a good sense of the people involved, of the South's constant struggles between blacks and whites, and of the underlying mistrust of unions which persists in the South to this day. But look to other sources to complete your frame of reference.
