How Daniel Day-Lewis and Billy Baldwin Almost Played Batman

21 December 2009 1:15 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

William Baldwin, who voices Batman in the upcoming animated Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, let an interesting bit of old casting news slip when discussing his new project with Figures.com. "I was one of Joel Schumacher's top choices when Val Kilmer wound up playing Batman," says Baldwin. "Tim Burton and Michael Keaton had left, so Joel had the luxury of replacing Michael Keaton, and he told me that his four choices, which was an eclectic, diverse array, were Daniel Day-Lewis, Ralph Feinnes, Val Kilmer, and me."

I can't imagine many scenarios where "Billy" Baldwin and Daniel Day-Lewis would be up for the same part, but this Batman Forever casting short list sort of blows my mind. I get giddy with the thought of seeing young Ralph Fiennes as debonair Bruce Wayne or Day-Lewis displaying his own brand of steel-jawed intensity behind the cape and cowl.

Tennant Dismisses Batman Rumours

21 December 2009 8:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

British actor David Tennant has dismissed rumours he has been in secret talks to play The Riddler in the next Batman movie.

The Doctor Who star, who quit the cult U.K. sci-fi series to pursue a career in Hollywood, was recently hit with a slew of rumours linking him to the next installment in the caped crusader franchise.

The Scot has previously spoken out about his desire to play the fiendish villian, portrayed by Jim Carrey in 1995's Batman Forever, and was recently rumoured to have had his wish granted by movie bosses.

But although Tennant would still love to take on the role, he has dismissed speculation that he is in negotiations to join the cast of a sequel to 2008's The Dark Knight.

He says, "I probably should be (The Riddler). But you'd think my agent would have mentioned something if it was true." »

Move Over Spidey - It's 'Superman: The Musical'!

8 December 2009 1:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Poor Superman. The price for being the most iconic of superheroes is that you end up with far, far more hideous adaptations. You may have thought Batman held that title with Batman Forever and Batman and Robin, but he has nothing on Superman, who not only wound up with Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace on his resume, but a musical, too! True Superman fans have probably heard of It's a Bird ... It's a Plane ...It's Superman, but the youngest among them have never seen it. Until now.

Thanks to the Internet, nothing terrible ever dies. The 1975 ABC special of It's a Bird has made its way to Google Video, and is embedded below for your viewing pleasure. Surprisingly, this actually enjoyed some success on Broadway, and even was revived in Los Angeles in 2007, though I'm not sure why. I realize individual opinion is just that, but this is honestly terrible. »

Sundance Photo Preview: Joel Schumacher’s Twelve

As Sundance Twentyten approaches, we'll be posting mini-previews with photos from some of the films we're looking forward to over the next month and a half. Last week we posted the first photos from Hesher, I Love Sarah Jane director Spencer Susser’s Feature Debut. Today I bring you the first photos from Joel Schumacher's Twelve, which is screening as the Closing Night Film in the Sundance Film Festival Premieres section. From a filmmaker who has given us such diverse films as The Lost Boys, The Phantom of the Opera, Flatliners, A Time To Kill, Batman Forever, Phone Booth and 8mm comes a new drama chronicling of the highs and lows of privileged kids on Manhattan's Upper East Side, in a tale that involves sex, drugs and murder. Written by Jordan Melamed (the director of 2001's Maniac), the story follows a young drug dealer who watches as his high-rolling »

'Iron Man 2': A brief history of War Machine

1 December 2009 10:40 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

The new poster for Iron Man 2 (launched on Yahoo Movies) prominently features War Machine, Iron Man's partner-in-Armor. This has me incredibly excited. I love War Machine. Because of an accident of timing, I've always thought of War Machine as the original armored hero. Iron Man is just a pale, more colorful imitation. Let me explain. I grew up during a bizarro-world phase of comic book history when practically every major iconic character was being killed or otherwise eliminated to make way for a newer model, usually with some kind of chic mecha-costume add-on that would look great on an action figure. »

Tommy Lee Jones Quits Lincoln Lawyer

23 November 2009 10:26 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

You don.t want to make Tommy Lee Jones mad. Other than his questionable performance as Two Face in Batman Forever, Jones has always played dudes who seem on the brink of madness, as though they.ve had their anger and emotion pent up for years upon years. And it turns out, all it takes is something like a screenplay dispute to set it all off. According to Variety, Tommy Lee Jones has walked away from The Lincoln Lawyer, a film he recently signed on to co-star and direct. The film is based on the Michael Connelly book of the same name and follows a mildly successful criminal defense lawyer who runs his office out of the backseat of his Lincoln Town Car. Matthew McConaughey is signed on to star. The movie is still on schedule to start filming next spring, so long as Lakeshore Entertainment can find another director »

Dane Cook for The Riddler in Batman 3?

11 November 2009 1:41 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

It's still unclear whether director Christopher Nolan will be returning for a third chapter in the Batman revamp, let alone what villain(s) will square off against the Dark Knight. Still, there have been rumors for months now that The Riddler will make a return appearance some fifteen years after Jim Carrey portrayed the character in Batman Forever.

Everyone from Eddie Murphy, to Johnny Depp to Curb Your Enthusiasm funnyman Larry David have been mentioned in connection to the roll of Edward Nigma, the villain who compulsively confesses to his crimes in riddle form. So when MTV recently sat down with actor and comedian Dane Cook (My Best Friend's Girl), they asked him if he would be interested in the part.

If they brought back The Riddler — a new Riddler the way they did with The Joker — that would be badass. I would do that.

'Riddle Me This', Dane Cook Says

10 November 2009 9:05 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

If the next Batman movie ends up featuring a certain puzzle-loving villain, actor/comedian Dane Cook wants in on the role.

According to MTV, the Good Luck Chuck star was recently asked if there were comic book movie characters he would like to play, to which he replied, "I love the new Dark Knight series and Batman Begins. If they brought back The Riddler—a new Riddler the way they did with The Joker—that would be bad-ass. I would do that."

The Riddler, a genius-level intellect frequently motivated by the challenge of outsmarting Batman, was previously played by Jim Carrey in the 1995 Batman Forever. Admittedly, Carrey’s manic shtick got old really fast, but at least Cook seems to realize that any Bat-villain must convey a sense of menace, not just dress up in flashy tights laden with question marks.

What If The Batmobile Was Designed By 'Alien' Artist H.R. Giger?

3 November 2009 2:29 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Sure, Batman and various other comic book characters have battled the creatures from the "Alien" movie franchise on more than one occasion (my favorite being Warren Ellis' "WildC.A.T.S/Aliens" story), but here's a crossover I never expected to see—and never will see, most likely.

According to BatmobileHistory.com, one of the designers contacted to create a new version of the Batmobile for 1995's "Batman Forever" (starring Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne) was none other than Swiss artist H.R. Giger, best known for creating the original, techno-organic design of the "Alien" creatures.

SuperPunch has also managed to locate a few pieces of Giger's early design art for the vehicle, which I've posted after the jump.

"H.R. Giger was contacted in 1994 to design a Batmobile for Batman Forever," reports BatmobileHistory. "His unique 'X' shaped design was to include articulated front legs/mandibles, retractable fins, and gatling gun »

Tropic Thunder Scribe Taking on Men In Black 3

30 October 2009 5:10 AM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

With a $589 million worldwide take for the first film and a $441 million worldwide pull-in for the second, I am shocked beyond belief (and a little appreciative) that Sony never force-fed a third Men In Black film.  Granted, there were Saturday morning cartoons, video games, and amusement park rides to rake in some cash off the brand, but a third film, with or without Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones’ involvements, could have easily been thrown together years ago.

Well, those “years ago” have turned in to today, as Risky Biz Blog is reporting that Tropic Thunder screenwriter Etan Cohen is hard at work on a third film in the Men In Black franchise.  Sony officially announced the project back in April, but, since then, not much has moved on the project until now.

Though no deal has been set in stone, Risky Biz is also stating Barry Sonnenfeld, who helmed the first two films, »

The Crow: 15 Years Of Devil's Night

29 October 2009 2:02 PM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Our five-part Halloween Week retrospective on "The Crow" continues, celebrating the film's 15th anniversary with cast and filmmaker interviews that explore its origin and legacy. Check back each day this week for another installment of our "15 Years Of Devil's Night" series.

Part Four: Best. Soundtrack. Ever?

By Ryan J. Downey

"The Crow" soundtrack is quite possibly the greatest alt-rock compilation assembled in the '90s. Coupled with Graeme Revell's hauntingly moving score, bands like The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, The Jesus and Mary Chain and Machines Of Loving Grace perfectly complimented the movie's dark and romantic themes.

Even the bands who contributed cover songs selected material that lined up well with the flick, intentionally or not. Nine Inch Nails covered "Lost Souls," by one of The Crow creator James O'Barr's favorite bands, Joy Division. Rollins Band did a version of Suicide's "Ghost Rider," about the Marvel hero. Pantera »

Akiva Goldsman talks Lobo, Swamp Thing and Says He Might Direct Winter’S Tale

19 October 2009 7:55 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Akiva Goldsman is a very busy man. He’s also someone that fandom has never been happy with. That’s because as the producer or screenwriter of films like “Batman Forever”, “Lost in Space”, “The Da Vinci Code”, “I Am Legend”, “Angels & Demons”, and “Hancock”, he’s easily pointed at for problems with the adaptations. But no matter what fandom thinks, the films he’s involved with make tons of money, so he’s not going anywhere.

Anyway, he’s currently developing movie versions of “Lobo” and “Swamp Thing”, and he might direct his first feature and it’s looking like it’ll be “Winter’s Tale”, which is Mark Helprin’s 1983 fantasy about an alternate-history New York, a thief and flying white horse. So if you’re curious about any of the projects, hit the jump to read what he had to say:

Which Big Stars Had Films That Were Secretly Dumped This Year?

23 September 2009 3:40 PM, PDT | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

There was a time in the 1990s when Joel Shumacher (The Lost Boys, Falling Down, Batman Forever) was one of the biggest directors around, but the times, they are a-changin'. In a reception quite unlike Schumacher's last small-scaled film, the 2000 Colin Farrell drama Tigerland, the director's new Lionsgate thriller Blood Creek was contractually dumped into a few theaters this past weekend with nary a whiff of press or promotion -- hell, there's not even a trailer.

Schumacher's moved on (he just wrapped the Chace Crawford vehicle Twelve) and Blood Creek's up-and-comers like Michael Fassbender and Henry Cavill will survive this indignity, but they're hardly the only ones to suffer this fate in 2009. Here's a healthy helping of big Hollywood stars who've seen their once-anticipated projects dumped into quiet release this year: »

'Batman 3' rumor check: Johnny Depp as the Riddler and other grapevine nonsense

23 September 2009 5:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Last year, Michael Caine got into a heap of hot water when he merely dared to address rumors that Johnny Depp might play the Riddler in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight sequel. Well, Caine's no dummy. And when he was recently asked the question again by MTV.com, he definitively stated that Depp would not be playing the Riddler...which, of course, may be news, too. Back in April, I spoke with Christian Bale over the phone about Public Enemies, and asked him then about the Depp rumors, thinking he might support the idea since he had just worked with Depp. He didn't take the bait. After I asked the question, he took the phone away from his ear, turned to someone who was in the room with him (I'm guessing a publicist or agent or some other stone-faced gatekeeper) and asked them, "Is there any truth to the fact »

'Shootin' The S--t With Kevin Smith': An Exclusive Excerpt

21 September 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Kevin Smith is a funny guy. He'd probably use a more... "colorful" word than "guy," one starting with 'mother' and ending with a term I won't repeat here (it starts with 'f'), but that's all part of his charm. He's a talented filmmaker to be sure -- just look at modern classics like "Clerks" and "Dogma" -- but he's also a fantastically well-spoken and engaging individual.

That's why you should be excited about Titan Books' "Shootin' the S--t With Kevin Smith: The Best of SModcast," which hits store shelves on September 22. As in tomorrow. It's filled transcribed conversations between Smith and his View Askew partner and longtime collaborator Scott Mosier. Hit the jump for a brief excerpt of the hilarity. And stay tuned for MTV.com next week, as Smith will be here in the office to answer some questions!

Fan-Made, Fake Posters For ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ or ‘Untitled Batman Project’

12 September 2009 1:50 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – There was talk of a sequel even before “The Dark Knight” hit theaters and obliterated box-office records. That’s all we still have at this point, but we also have a pair of decent, fan-made posters for “The Dark Knight” sequel.

Though IMDb lists the poster above in its entry for the next “The Dark Knight” film, which is

currently being called “The Dark Knight Returns” or the “Untitled Batman Project,” this image

is a fan-made creation and can be found in this GameSpot discussion thread on Aug. 30, 2008.

Though so much of the project is still up in the air and unofficial, what’s currently being called “The Dark Knight Returns” (which may or may not be the sequel’s actual title) or the “Untitled Batman Project” (as it’s now listed on IMDb) has a fan-made poster above that dates back at least to Aug. »

District 9 – Alex’s Review

5 September 2009 3:30 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

You know what. I love cinema. I think cinema is greatest thing that mankind has ever produced. I think when used correctly cinema is the highest form of art that exists on this planet. Nothing gives me greater pleasure than watching a director so dedicated to his craft that he comes up with something truly remarkable.

Ladies & Gentlemen I give you Neill Blomkamp.

A 29-year-old South African who became friends with Peter Jackson and in doing so got him to produce a Sci-Fi masterpiece.

Blomkamp impressed Jackson so much that he hired him to direct Halo. A film based on the hugely popular computer game available on the Xbox. Unfortunately the budget for Halo spiralled way out of control and the film was shelved. It’s a very similar story to the problems that the Bioshock production has encountered.

Anyway with the Halo film gone Neill Blomkamp pitched the idea »

Christian Bale voted best Batman

1 September 2009 7:39 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

Over the years a generous smattering of actors have donned the cape and nabbed the sidekick to play arguably the most dark and suave of all the comic superheroes, yes folks, we’re talking about the Rolls Royce of spandex-clad action-men, Batman. And while all little boys (and many men we expect) day-dream of stepping into the bat shoes of this oh-so-sexy dark knight there are only a few who will ever grace the screen as the mysterious man-rodent, and even fewer who can garner the title of being the “best batman”. Well, a public opinion poll that closed yesterday can unmask the identity of that very actor, and we can tell you now that it’s none other than the latest and perhaps most critically-applauded of all Bruce Waynes, Christian Bale.

The poll conducted at MTV’s Splash Page gave readers the chance to vote for their favourite of »
