The sitcom as an entertainment genre is well-known for rehashing familiar routines, gags, situations, characters, relationships, etc. In contrast to this tradition, "Ned and Stacey" is one of the first sitcoms that deals honestly with a sexless marriage. It manages some good laughs and witty observations about manners and morals. While it lasted only 2 seasons and 46 episodes (with the last 11 episodes not actually airing on Fox but turning up later when the series was syndicated), it broke ground for sitcom material that turns up later in more successful series such as "Ally McBeal" and "Will and Grace" (which also stars the excellent Debra Messing). Michael J. Weithorn, the creator of "Ned and Stacey," went on to do a more conventional (and successful) sitcom, "The King of Queens," which is not as interesting as "Ned and Stacey," but shows again his eye for creating memorable television characters.
