Exclusive: As Greg Daniels continues to work with a group of writers on what could become an expansion of The Office universe, Nathan For You co-creator Michael Koman has emerged as a leading creative voice. If Daniels’ new mockumentary exploratory project gets greenlighted to series, Koman will serve as the offshoot’s co-creator, Deadline has learned.
The potential Office follow-up, from Universal Television, remains in development.
As Deadline revealed exclusively in January, the prospective new series, which is not a reboot, would likely be set in a new office with new characters but live within the same world as the Steve Carell-led mockumentary series which follows employees at the Scranton, Pennsylvania, branch of the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. Daniels has indicated that a new Office iteration could follow a crew doing a documentary about a different subject.

Jeopardy!‘s Tournament of Champions is bigger than ever this year.
To celebrate its 40th season, the American trivia institution invited a record-breaking 27 contestants to its hallowed annual tourney featuring the previous season’s best champions. (It also certainly didn’t hurt that the show needed to add some extra tournaments for ToC eligibility due to the Hollywood writers strike messing with its usual production schedule).
The expanded contestant count has given Jeopardy! the opportunity to invite back some intriguing contenders who didn’t hit the required benchmark of at least five wins in their initial run. It’s also meant that the show has gotten to try something it’s never done before: bring on a Celebrity Jeopardy! champion to contend with the “real” trivia masters.
Said Celebrity Jeopardy! champ on this year’s ToC is comedic actor Ike Barinholtz, who you may know from his time on Mad TV,...

When Matt Groening and David X. Cohen's animated sci-fi comedy "Futurama" began to be developed in the late 1990s, it was not treated with the respect one might expect for a follow-up to "The Simpsons." Where Groening's previous cartoon dealt in the classic sitcom setup of a dysfunctional family, "Futurama" was a harder sell, set in the year 3000 but in a world that largely looked like the late '90s. Only with aliens and spaceships.
Fox, the channel on which the show premiered, should have been a good home. After all, "The Simpsons" was an incredible success, at that point entering its 10th year on the network. Mike Judge and Greg Daniels had produced the excellent "King of the Hill" for Fox, giving the channel another animated sitcom hit. Seth McFarlane's "Family Guy" was in development around the same time. All of these shows would become part of Fox's...

Over the course of its 50-year existence, Troma has helped launch the careers of filmmakers like Trey Parker & Matt Stone (South Park), James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Eli Roth (Hostel), along with countless actors who went on to long careers, but their biggest export by any internal metric — financial success, brand recognition, franchisability, fan base — is 1984’s The Toxic Avenger.
The film is preceded by an “extreme violence” warning. The gore is indeed graphic — the first kill features a kid’s head being run over by a car, firmly establishing that no one is safe and nothing is off limits — but it could use about a dozen more trigger warnings by today’s standards. If you can be offended, you will be offended by the boundary-pushing content that includes (but is certainly not limited to) racism, homophobia, ableism, and sexual misconduct — yet there is substance behind the sleaze.

In July 2022, on the heels of the premiere of his third feature “Nope,” Jordan Peele went viral when he responded to a tweet calling him the greatest horror director of all time. “Sir, please put the phone down I beg you,” the writer/director wrote. “Sorry. I love your enthusiasm, but I will just not tolerate any John Carpenter slander!!!”
That’s just one of many examples of Peele professing his love for classic horror cinema. Even before he established himself as one of the industry’s top filmmakers, Peele was always open about his love for the sometimes taboo genre. In recent years, he has used his newfound status as a darling of the horror community to wax poetic about the many scary subgenres he enjoys. From 1980s slashers to meticulously crafted contemporary psychological horror, Peele’s appreciation for the art of the scare only seems to increase as his filmography grows.

Jordan Peele wasn't always one of the greatest horror filmmakers in the world. First he was a prolific comedian, starring in five seasons of the late-night sketch comedy series "Mad TV," impersonating celebrities left and right. Then he created his own show with his fellow "Mad TV" alumni Keegan-Michael Key, appropriately titled "Key & Peele," and that show was a major comedy hit that's still actively memed to this day.
It made sense that, when Jordan Peele moved into the realm of movies, his first project was the phenomenally funny buddy comedy "Keanu." Peele co-wrote the screenplay and starred opposite Key as mild-mannered friends who have to step outside their comfort zone and into the world of violent crime in order to rescue their kidnapped, adorable kitten. Peele may not have directed it, but it's a delight, and established Peele as a force to be reckoned with in motion picture comedies as well as TV.

The Abbott Elementary creator and star is set to lead the NBC sketch comedy series April 1, marking its first new episode since Jenna Ortega hosted the show March 11. Brunson will be joined by musical guest Lil Yachty, who is similarly making his SNL debut.
In a video released Wednesday, featured player Molly Kearney talks to the camera, in a style similar to that employed by ABC’s Abbott Elementary, and explains that Brunson has been caught up in the April Fools’ Day spirit. As the footage shows, Brunson keeps hiding throughout the studio to surprise the performer with unexpected gifts.

Set to launch May 2, the event is a followup to Yang’s first Amazon comedy special, “Good Deal,” which launched in August 2020. In his new standup engagement, Yang will poke fun at “love languages, loser friends, and negotiating with his Asian parents,” per Prime Video.

Aside from his memorable parts in “Crazy Rich Asians,” Netflix’s “Love Hard” and HBO’s “Silicon Valley,” Yang is best known as the author of “How to American: An Immigrant’s Guide to Disappointing Your Parents,...

Saturday Night Live is the show everyone thinks of when they think about sketch comedy. Though not the first and certainly not the last, SNL has been on NBC live since 1975. So it has dominated a lot of pop culture real estate. If you are looking for more sketch comedy with a different point of view, or just a different cast, here are 12 other options.

The Second City comedy troupe got into the sketch comedy TV business one year after SNL. Their premise was that the Second City Television network would air different sketches. Comedy legends John Candy, Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Andrea Martin, Martin Short and more starred in the show’s five seasons.
Moranis and Thomas’s Strange Brew McKenzie brothers began here.

Some actors become so prestigious, they can get almost any part they want without auditioning; the awards they've won and the box office receipts from their past blockbusters are all that's necessary to land them a highly-coveted role in an upcoming production. Of course, there are plenty of top performers who still have to audition for roles. But unless a bigger name gets into the running, there's often little standing between them and the chance to play an important character.
However, what rarely gets talked about are actors who not only get turned down for famous TV and film roles but aren't even granted the opportunity to audition for a part. It's especially surprising when the rejected thespian is already an A-lister; you'd think their star power would be enough to at least warrant a courtesy audition. Here, we take a look at a few actors who were never given a chance at notable roles.

Amazon is deepening its relationship with Alex Borstein.
In fact, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star is readying her first Amazon Original comedy special, which she’s titled Alex Borstein: Corsets & Clown Suits. It’s slated to hit on April 18th, four days after Maisel debuts its fifth and final season on the service. Fittingly, it was filmed at The Wolford Theatre, the fictional burlesque club from Maisel‘s fourth season, and relied on the award-winning crafts team from the show.
The special, which comes as Borstein and her co-stars embark on another crowded awards season, is being billed as the three-time Emmy winner’s “deeply personal and wildly fictitious account of one woman’s attempt to f*** with perception.” Equal parts provocative and whimsical, the self-penned performance will include assists from Borstein’s muse and maestro, Barcelona-native musicians, Eric Mills and Salva Rey. It is the first special from the former Mad TV star.

“Make sure you put the things that will get me canceled right up in the headline,” Ike Barinholtz jokes in early February as I leave the Los Angeles home he shares with his wife and three daughters.
We’ve just spent the past hour-plus talking about everything from casting to cancel culture in the guest house he’s converted into his office. The space is an homage to comedy, though mixed in with his books and posters sits his latest, crowning achievement: the trophy he has recently won as a contestant on Celebrity Jeopardy! As Barinholtz explains, he keeps it just behind his desk chair so it’s firmly in view whenever he’s on Zoom. “That way if someone disagrees with me, I can just swing around and tap it,” he says with a big, goofy laugh.

Exclusive: Days after a feverish auction wrapped up for Weapons, the town is still talking about the wake left in its path. The Dish hears that the deal for the Zach Cregger-directed horror film is remarkable in that this is only Cregger’s second film — after the highly profitable debut Barbarian — and it sold to New Line for an overall sum around 38 million, including the budget and Cregger getting 5 million to direct, and 10 million total when that sum is added to his fees for scripting and producing alongside Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon, and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules.
The bidding also included Universal, with Jordan Peele and his Monkeypaw to produce. While others circled it came down to those two studios. Sources said that that the Uni bid was about 7 million less than New Line. Peele, we hear, was ready to kick in part of his contractual back end.

With over 250 million copies sold, Masashi Kishimoto's "Naruto" is one of the most popular manga series in the world. Over the past 20 years, the famous story has been adapted from the popular manga into three equally popular anime series, "Naruto," "Naruto Shippūden," and "Boruto." However, despite Kishimoto's rich world, intricate storylines, and groundbreaking fights, the series wouldn't be quite as popular without its knucklehead protagonist, Naruto Uzumaki, and there would be no Naruto without Maile Flanagan.
According to a 2014 interview with Western Herald, Flanagan started out in improv before moving into the world of acting. In the late '90s and early 2000s, she made small appearances in "MADtv," "Men in Black: The Series," and "Jackie Chan Adventures" before landing "Naruto" in 2002. Prior to becoming Naruto's English voice, Flanagan had never heard of the character or the manga. "I had no idea how big 'Naruto' was," she told a...

Jordan Peele's meteoric ascent in the film industry has landed him squarely on the map as one of the rare figures -- alongside proven talents such as Christopher Nolan, M. Night Shyamalan, and a select few others -- who's able to bring in audiences to original genre movies by virtue of their name alone. But Peele's actual directing work really only scratches the surface of what he brings to the table. In addition to lending his voice to animated movies like "Wendell & Wild" and "The Bob's Burgers Movie," he's also used his considerable influence to set up his own production company and help get several other projects off the ground.
By now, seeing the evocative logo of Monkeypaw Productions before his and other movies has become a familiar sight, conjuring images of the famous horror short story about the mystical item that grants wishes... at a cost. For Peele,...

In the 2003 comedy "Elf," Will Ferrell plays Buddy, a regular human who was raised at the North Pole as a Christmas elf and works in Santa's Workshop. When he finds out he's really a human from New York City, Buddy travels to The Big Apple to find his father, Walter Hobbs (James Caan). A timeless winter holiday classic, "Elf" is one of the best Christmas movies ever ... which only makes it all the more amusing that a huge chunk of the film's set would have been fitting for a horror movie instead.
Searching for his father, Buddy parades around the bustling streets of New York City, and it's obvious the film's exterior version of Manhattan is the real deal. The New York interior shots, on the other hand, is where the movie tricks us all. Scenes set inside the elaborate Christmas-decorated Gimbels department store, Walter Hobbs's work office and apartment,...

The trio of movies that Jordan Peele has directed over the past decade — “Get Out,” “Us,” and “Nope” — established him as one of the major filmmakers to arrive this century. Evolving beyond the sketch comedy roots of “MADtv” and “Key & Peele,” Peele’s approach to horror uses the genre as a Trojan horse for big ideas about race, class, and the fragile foundations of American society. They also offer an impeccable combination of eeriness and humor that expands their appeal. “Get Out” ultimately grossed 255 million worldwide on a 4.5 million budget, scored Peele a Best Original Screenplay Oscar, and a first-look deal with Universal. The box office and awards success of “Get Out” was a transformative moment for Black cinema in America — as well as genre storytelling with social impact — and Peele did not take it for granted. Even as he kept making his movies, Peele scaled up his production company,...

There's a bittersweet reality that comes with the life of an actor. There can be seasons where it feels like the roles are just flowing in by the second, and then there are quieter seasons - Michelle Ortiz knows both quite well. Being a Latina with no connections or hookups in the industry, the actor has always worked that much harder at any role she's ever landed. It's that resilience and the commitment she continues to dedicate to her craft that helped her land her latest role as Maggie on Hulu's "This Fool," which released on Aug. 12. Ortiz beautifully marries both her skills as a comedian and as an actor who can deliver drama in a way that really highlights how nuanced Maggie is as a character. She's an independent woman but in many ways also very codependent on her on-and-off boyfriend, Julio (played by standup comedian Chris Estrada...

“Nope” is not a coincidence; it’s a trend.
Each of Jordan Peele’s three horror features are distinctive works with varying themes. With Universal Pictures’ “Nope,” he’s surely in store for the most polarizing reception of his career, as the film’s visuals and narrative beats will divide critics and audiences. In the land of the Oscars, major attention for best picture, director and original screenplay appears out of reach, considering genre bias and possible other awards priorities for Universal ahead with Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” and Maria Schrader’s “She Said.” However, something has become clearer as “Nope” opens to the public: Peele is our modern-day Alfred Hitchcock.
“The blasphemy!” shouted classic movie enthusiasts and #FilmTwitter at their screens. How can we compare a man who has only directed three films to the “master of suspense”?

As we near the last few weeks of July, the box office might start slowing down, but it won’t be happening this weekend, because after three years, Oscar winner Jordan Peele is back with “Nope,” his follow-up to 2019’s “Us.” How much money is it expected to make? Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
From the trailers and commercials, “Nope” looks like Peele’s take on UFOs, and it reunites the filmmaker with actor Daniel Kaluuya, who received his first Oscar nomination for “Get Out” before winning an Oscar for “Judas and the Black Messiah” last year. He’s joined by Keke Palmer, who recently provided a voice for Pixar’s “Lightyear,” as well as another Oscar nominee in Steven Yeun (“Minari”).

The story goes that Alex Borstein was ready to take a break from Hollywood — literally, to relocate with her two children to Barcelona — when longtime friend Amy Sherman-Palladino sent her a script for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”
“I almost throttled her because it was so good,” Borstein says. “I was like, ‘How do I not audition for this?’”
Like a well-timed joke or cosmic bit of fate, both things stuck the landing: “The pilot got picked up and my time in Barcelona got picked up. I loved it so much, I stayed for almost five years.”
Four seasons and two Emmys later, Borstein hasn’t stopped relishing her role on the hit Amazon Prime Video series as Susie Myerson, the tough-shelled and sarcastic manager to 1950s stand-up comedian Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan). “Maisel” is the name on the show’s marquee, but Susie has proven to be a vital...

“History of the World, Part I” is finally getting a Part II, with Hulu ordering a variety series followup to the classic Mel Brooks comedy film, Variety has learned exclusively.
“History of the World, Part II” is described as a sequel to the 1981 film. The film was made up of segments set during different periods of world history. Among those was the Stone Age, Ancient Rome, and the French Revolution. Like most of Brooks’ work, it also featured musical numbers, including one about the Spanish Inquisition and, of course, “Jews in Space.”
Brooks is a writer and executive producer on the series along with Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, Ike Barinholtz, David Stassen and Kevin Salter. There is no word yet on which world events the series will cover. Hulu has ordered eight episodes of the show. The writers room is beginning in October with production slated to begin in Spring...

Amanda Bearse (Married…with Children) has found one of the first roles of a newly rebooted screen career in Universal Pictures’ history-making rom-com Bros—the first studio film to feature an entirely LGBTQ+ principal cast, with queer actors taking on queer roles, as well as all heterosexual characters.
She joins an all-star ensemble led by Billy Eichner and Luke Macfarlane, which also includes Ts Madison, Miss Lawrence, Symone, Guillermo Diaz and Guy Branum.
Bros is billed as a smart, swoony and heartfelt comedy about two gay men—played by Eichner and Macfarlane—maybe, possibly, probably, stumbling towards love…Maybe. They’re both very busy.
Bearse will portray the mother of Macfarlane’s character.
Nicholas Stoller is directing from a script he co-wrote with Eichner. Judd Apatow is producing alongside Stoller and Josh Church, with Eichner exec producing. Universal’s Senior EVP of Production Erik Baiers will oversee the project on behalf of the studio.
