Peter W. Simeon :
When Wolf (1994) first came out on laserdisc, it was one of the first movies to be transferred by a new high definition telecine-technique which Sony introduced. Probably this was also the start of anamorphic transfers. They claimed that the transfer to HDTV and the following downscaling to NTSC provided better quality than the usual straight to NTSC transfers. I was not very impressed by the transfers back then, as other labels had demonstrated that they could produce very good transfers without doing HDTV transfers. Of course, the production of a high resolution master is very useful, as it can be used as source for various other lower resolution masters for PAL, NTSC or anamorphic DVDs. However the scaling process must be very good to not introduce other artifacts. The DVD version also shows some flaws in the picture, but it is better than the laserdisc. The increased resolution of the anamorphic picture makes a big difference. The picture problems are mainly some video noise, a bit of aliasing and some compression artifacts.
In the last few years Sony has apparently improved their transfer technique quite a bit, as some of the newer DVDs really look gorgeous.
