Box Office Report: November 13-15, 2009

Note: These are early box office reports, final tallies may differ slightly.
While Richard Curtis' Pirate Radio opened to less than $3 million dollars (to be fair, the film earned a very minimal release, debuting in less than 900 theatres in the Us) in ticket sales, it was a huge weekend for the Sci-fi world. Roland Emmerich's latest apocalyptic picture opened in the top slot this weekend earning an impressive $65 million dollars. Emmerich, who's become known for his end-of-the-world sci-fi adventures, adds more meat to an already hearty résumé that includes the extremely successful Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, 10,000 B.C. and Stargate.
There were plenty in line for the second consecutive week to see the animated gem A Christmas Carol; the Jim Carrey powered picture picked up another $22 million dollars (bringing it's total two week earnings to $63 million dollars) at the box office, solidifying the number two position at the box office.

Film review: 2012 and why it really is an epic disaster

The whole world disappears into yawning chasms and beneath thundering tsunamis in Roland Emmerich's $200million disaster movie 2012.
Unfortunately, so does characterisation, originality and good writing.
The computer-generated carnival of calamity makes for great spectacle but becomes brain-numbing and boring.
And yet you find yourself looking forward to the next set piece of destruction because the rest of the movie is so dull. The entire experience is woefully unengaging. Spoilers ahead...
Even the basic premise is flawed. The Mayan calendar does Not say the world will end in 2012; it merely comes to the end of a cycle in that year and continues well beyond it.
John Cusack (pictured below) is the central character, a novelist and limo driver who becomes caught up in the events and, in a story about mankind building giant arks, has a son called Noah. Funny.
At times, Emmerich seems to be telling the story with a wry smile,

Emmerich Wants to Celebrate ‘Independence Day’ Again. And Again.

After watching 2012 the other day, which feels like it should have been called Independence Day, 2012, I can't say I'm thrilled to hear Roland Emmerich discuss a fervor for not only making a sequel, but making two for the film that really vaulted him into the great beyond of filmmaking.
Yeah, yeah, Stargate was awesome, too.
According to the MTV Movies Blog, Emmerich really wants to roll the dice on more ID movies.
The money quote here:
What we want to do in the next – it's actually two movies – we want to do a bigger arc," he explained. "Independence Day was always like the king who leads his troops into battle against an evil force, and that stays like that."
So we'd need Big Willy back. Maybe see what Jeff Goldblum has going on these days. And we'd need Roland Emmerich's record to keep spinning, his car to keep idling, and

Back on October 13 there was some conversation about Roland Emmerich wanting to return to the world of Independence Day with a sequel. Now with 2012 opening tomorrow Emmerich has spilled more beans on what he has in mind for second film.
While talking to MTV Movies Blog Emmerich revealed he wants to make two sequels to his 1996 blockbuster Independence Day.
“What we want to do in the next - it’s actually two movies - we want to do a bigger arc,” he explained. “Independence Day was always like the king who leads his troops into battle against an evil force, and that stays like that.”
While there is no script for the projects as of yet, as it’s still in the idea phase, Emmerich did suggest a title.
“‘ID4-ever,’ Part I and II maybe?”
I am not sure how I feel about another Independence Day film. i love the first one.

It's the end of the world as we know it, but Roland Emmerich feels fine. And he should feel fine. No filmmaker of his generation has made more money off of destroying the world, one internationally famous landmark at a time. Between "Independence Day," "Godzilla" and "The Day After Tomorrow," Emmerich's disaster oeuvre has yielded more than $1.7 billion in worldwide box office (that doesn't take into account films like "Stargate," "10,000 B.C." and "The Patriot"). On Friday (Nov. 13), Emmerich's latest global destroyer hits theaters. Given the other names on his resume, it's hard to believe, but

John Cusack stars as a divorced novelist who finds out the world is going to end and tries to save his family from a series of disasters in the action epic 2012 from writer/director Roland Emmerich. Emmerich's no stranger to telling big stories having helmed Stargate, Independence Day, and The Day After Tomorrow, but according to the veteran action director, this is likely to be his last huge production for a while. On the special 'black' carpet in downtown La, Emmerich told me he's ready to try something smaller. "I will not up the bar in my next movie," said Emmerich. "No, I'll just do a small, little movie, very different."
Check out these interviews from the disaster-free La premiere of Columbia Pictures' 2012:

From Director Roland Emmerich (The Day After Tomorrow, The Patriot, and Godzilla) comes the cult classic Stargate in High Definition 1080p picture. Haled as .a must-see sci-fi classic., Stargate grew into something bigger with the expansion of the franchise to the world of television and direct-to-dvd movies. Fans will want to revisit the film that started the Stargate franchise. The picture holds up well, and the special features make it worth the money. This anniversary edition has over four hours of extras. For the purists out there, you can view the movie in its original 1994 theatrical version, but if you like a little something extra to go with the popcorn and a relaxing Friday night, you can view

Roland Emmerich, whose disaster movie 2012 erupts on to the big screen on November 13, has revealed he finds superhero movies boring and has rejected every offer to direct a comic book adaptation.
Emmerich, whose other credits include Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow, Independence Day and Stargate, admitted he was "a little worried" about the culture of remakes and adaptations.
He said: "I don't know how many more superheroes they can pull out of their hat. I hate superheroes.
"I always say no to every one that I get offered because I feel that it's boring. But they seem to be successful for some of the people.
"Some of them do [make money], some don't. But they make more money than they lose so they keep making them, and when one works then they have a franchise."
Speaking in Sci Fi Now magazine, he continued: "It's very unimaginative. I'm a total fan of people

Stargate: Universe's producers were tasked with a somewhat unorthodox mission: reach outside of the Stargate franchise's existing fan-base and bring in viewers who had never watched a single episode of 'Gate. In order to accomplish that, the Sgu story had to quickly get these viewers up to speed and make them feel at home in the Stargate universe. Enter David Blue's Eli. The character of Eli, a brainy gamer who unknowingly cracks an alien code embedded in an Mmo and is drafted into the Stargate program, is not only a vital member of the Sgu story, he is also the voice for Stargate newbies within the Sgu universe. Chances are, if you have a question Eli is going to ask it; if you are puzzled by the audacity of the Stargate rules, Eli will emote your frustration. However, don't dismiss Blue's Eli as purely a utility character. Eli

In my opinion, “Stargate” is undeniably Ronald Emmerich’s top film made. The science fiction actioner which spawned a cult following through the film as well as the TV series, is visually stunning and shines on Blu-ray.
Truly, one of my favorite films at the time, I’m glad to say, it’s back to that status after catching it once again in the format it deserves. Revisiting the film, I chose to explore the “Extended” version over the “Theatrical” and was left immediately surprised and pleased with an alternate opening and various new scenes throughout the film. For those who have seen “Stargate” I’d suggest this route, for those who haven’t, watch it as it was, then try the extended offering.
I’m sure most know what the story concerns but let’s reminisce a little. James Spader stars as Dr. Daniel Jackson, an Egypologist who’s

Fifteen years ago I was planning my nights around episodes of "Mystery Science Theater," programming math cheats into my graphing calculator and filming "60 Minutes"-style interviews with Cobra Commander. I was also madly in love with director Roland Emmerich's "Stargate," the German filmmaker's bold sci-fi experiment in 1994 that foreshadowed his big-budget juggernaut "Independence Day" only two years later. "Stargate" is now bowing on Blu-ray as a "15th Anniversary Edition," and it's one of a handful of notable releases during an otherwise forgettable DVD week.
"Stargate" finds Kurt Russell as a suicidal, no-nonsense military officer tasked to lead a group of battle-hardened veterans -- and soft-skinned ninny scientist James Spader -- through a newly discovered wormhole to an unknown destination. The other side winds up being a sandy desert planet whose native inhabitants have kept their human slaves in bondage under the guise of ancient Egypt. It was a wholly original concept,

Sony have released three TV spots for upcoming “2012″ disaster movie.
Never before has a date in history been so significant to so many cultures, so many religions, scientists, and governments. In “2012,” a large group of people must deal with natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions, typhoons and glaciers. The idea stems from the fact that the Mayan calendar ends in 2012, which could mean the end of the world.
“2012″ is directed and co-written by German filmmaker Roland Emmerich (“Godzilla,” “The Patriot,” “The Day After Tomorrow,” “Stargate,” “Independence Day,” “10,000 B.C.”). Harald Kloser (”The Day After Tomorrow,” “10,000 B.C.” “The Thirteenth Floor,” “Alien vs Predator”) worked with Emmerich on the script.
The film stars John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Danny Glover, Thandie Newton, Oliver Platt, Thomas McCarthy, Woody Harrelson, Chin Han, Morgan Lily and Beatrice Rosen.
“2012″ opens November 13th, 2009.

The writers and producers of Syfy's Stargate Universe could've played it safe and got along just fine with their latest series.
After Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin's 1994 feature film from MGM, the series' first TV adaption (SG1) arrived in 1997. When you throw in the follow-up series, Infinity and Atlantis, the Stargate franchise has run on TV in one form or another for more than 12 years.
When the time came to invent the next step in the franchise, show-runners Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper could have trotted out more of the same and done perfectly well. Instead, they upped the ante -- bringing a bigger budget and updated production techniques to Stargate Universe.
MGM and Syfy welcomed journalists to Vancouver's Bridge Studios to explore the show's starship Destiny set and discover how this series cruises beyond its successful predecessors.

Roland Emmerich's 1991 mega-hit Stargate is set to land on Blu-ray October 27th in an all-new 15th Anniversary edition. Responsible for spawning a very lucrative and long running science fiction franchise, this is the film that launched Emmerich's career. And it is finally getting the hi-def treatment it deserves. To celebrate this beautifully remastered adventure for a whole new generation of sci-fi lovers, we have an exclusive clip from the upcoming release about shooting the film in Arizona. Click on the clip below to check it out:
This lucrative, elephantine-budgeted sci-fi opus paved the way for director Roland Emmerich's mega-hit Independence Day (1996). The story commences in Giza, Egypt, circa 1928, where an archaeological expedition unearths an ancient ring with cryptic hieroglyphs. The film then moves to the present day, where Egyptologist Daniel Jackson (James Spader) is busily trying to convince a group of skeptics that the pyramids were not built by man,

Emmerich Comments On 'Stargate' Sequel

Frankly, we can't imagine MGM having any desire to do a sequel to Roland Emmerich's 1994 film Stargate, not given that the subsequent television series of the same name have all but dominated the property, with ten years of Sg-1, five years of Atlantis...and now Stargate Universe in production. Fact is, the series were far better and more lucrative than the film could have ever hoped to have been.
That said, Emmerich hasn't altogether dismissed it.
"Whew, it's a tough one," he told Sci Fi Wire. "I mean, I constantly keep talking about it with [writer] Dean [Devlin], too. I mean, we also keep talking about an 'Independence Day' sequel, but it's just such a tough thing to do these days."
Over the intervening years, Dean Devlin has remarked that he always wanted to do the trilogy that he and Emmerich originally envisioned, and he similarly told Sci Fi Wire that he's also game,

Emmerich Talks Adapting Asimov.s 'The Foundation'

According to Roland Emmerich, screenwriter Robert Rodat is laying the groundwork for his movie based on Isaac Asimov’s "The Foundation".
Speaking to IGN Movies, the Independence Day and Stargate helmer said the project’s biggest hurdle was transforming a sprawling cosmic book series, which spans 500 years and features a large cast of characters, into a workable film narrative. Apparently, the Oscar-nominated Rodat was up to the challenge.
Emmerich said Rodat recommended combining characters, "and that's what we did and it worked really, really well in the context. And I think Asimov would have conceived this as a science-fiction trilogy or series from the very beginning, he would have done that, too, but he didn't. So I think in spirit it's totally Foundation but it has consolidated characters which go through the three movies."
What they did not want to do, Emmerich said, was make "The Foundation" into a movie by drastically revising it,

It's not very often Stargate fans see efforts to tie the popular 1994 movie in with the television franchise, but Lionsgate is doing that in an effort to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the movie that first made the word "stargate" a household name. The original movie, written and directed by Roland Emmerich, and starring Kurt Russell, Djimon Hounsou and James Spader -- the man who first got to play the popular character of Daniel Jackson, is coming to Blu-ray. It coincides with the first-season run of "Stargate: Universe," the third series in the Stargate franchise, right now on Syfy, and will offer both the theatrical and extended cuts of the film together in one package for the first time. The DVD also includes four hours of special features, including a gag reel as well as interactive
