The Notable Films of 2010: Part Four

19 December 2009 11:50 PM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Georgia

Opens: 2010

Cast: Val Kilmer, Andy Garcia, Rupert Friend, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Johnathon Schaech

Director: Renny Harlin

Summary: An American journalist, his cameraman, and a Georgian native get caught in the crossfire of the five-day Russia-Georgia conflict in August 2008, and then have to deal with their obligation to be impartial.

Analysis: A timely parable on war, or Hollywood propaganda filmmaking at its worst? Wherever it goes, especially in Europe and the former Soviet states, "Georgia" will cause a lot of talk and controversy as the incidents depicted are still so fresh in many's minds. Like all topics of the sort, it'll also have its strong supporters and detractors having opinions on the film long before a frame of footage is screened anywhere.

Shot on-location in Tbilisi, the project also marks a potential return to form for Finnish director Renny Harlin. Given the right material the skilled action director delivered three »

Alec Baldwin Doesn't Have Any Interest in Acting Anymore

30 November 2009 10:02 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

He's been nominated for Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, an Academy Award and received several Emmy nominations and even wins for his work on NBC's hilarious series "30 Rock." But apparently that's just not cutting it as Alec Baldwin told Men's Journal (via THR) that he doesn't "have any interest in acting anymore." To make this even more depressing, he says: "I consider my entire movie career a complete failure. The goal of movie-making is to star in a film where your performance drives the film, and the film is either a soaring critical or commercial success, and I never had that." It's very sad, but essentially true. At first I thought, "That's crazy, Alec!" But then I tried to name one of Baldwin's film characters who could be considered iconic, and could only think of the The Shadow and Jack Ryan in Hunt for Red October. And while Baldwin »

The apocalypse goes "1970s pop sci-fi" in The Arcadian

24 November 2009 11:38 AM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

The Arcadian is an upcoming post-apocalyptic adventure that follows actor J. Larose (of Saw III, Saw IV, and Repo! The Genetic Opera fame) as an enigmatic warrior called "The Lighthouse Keeper" who goes on a quest for "revenge and redemption in a strange future world" we're told is "reminiscent of wild 1970s pop sci-fi."

Inspired in equal parts by samurai movies, rock operas, and underground comics, we're told that the visual world of The Arcadian will be an homage to the work of underground illustrators and be something quite unique due to the fact that it was shot entirely on a Canon 5D Mark II camera - chosen for its unparalleled low-light sensitivity.

The Arcadian has just wrapped principle photography and is heading into an intense round of post. It is due Q2, 2010.

To make up for the fact that we have no detailed plot synopsis yet, we've included a »

Sam Raimi talks Spider-Man 4 and his love for The Shadow

29 May 2009 5:09 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Director Sam Raimi is just four weeks away from seeing a first draft of the Spider-Man 4 screenplay by Broadway playwright David Lindsay-Abaire.

Despite the best efforts of website interviewers, Raimi still refuses to reveal which baddies the web-spinning hero might be facing in the next instalment.

But he has explained the process for choosing which villains will appear in the movie, which starts filming next February and is set for release in May, 2011.

He said: "I've talked with David [Lindsay-Abaire] about a possible villain, villains, villainess. [We've spoken] about who knows what Spider-Man's conflicting personas would be."

"I'm trying to, with the writer, find Peter Parker's story primarily. And find the right conflict for him to come up against. So that either he can grow as a human being and overcome this thing, or perish. It's more about finding the villain that represents the best story for Peter."

Jean Claude Van Damme Fights Vinnie Jones

13 May 2009 1:53 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Jean Claude Van Damme is still working on that comeback. This time he's getting help from director Russell Mulcahy. THR says Jcvd will face off against Vinnie Jones in a Mulcahy movie called Weapon. In it, they'll play rival assassins. The film's plot description seems to boil down mostly to their choice of killing instrument. Vinnie is a master sharpshooter and Van Damme is particularly fond of using a knife. Mulcahy used to know a thing or two about mano a mano action movies. He's probably best known for directing Highlander back in 1986. Unfortunately he also directed Highlander II: The Quickening, and my love of The Shadow aside, Russell's career went missing in action. He's seen a resurgence in recent years. In 2007 he directed the mildly successful sequel Resident Evil: Extinction and his upcoming movie Give em' Hell, Malone with Thomas Jane and Ving Rhames is getting some positive buzz. »

Russell Mulcahy: From Razorbacks to Tigershark Bait

1 May 2009 1:17 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Russell Mulcahy is no stranger to making movies involving ill-tempered animals. After all, this is the guy that gave us the killer giant boar flick Razorback, unleashed killer birds in Resident Evil: Extinction, and let's not forget he survived working with Alec Baldwin in The Shadow. So with the Piranha remake poised to make 3D killer fish movies all the rage, Mulcahy has signed on to direct the 3D tiger shark flick Bait.

The Aussie director will direct Bait for Arclight Film. The plot synopsis, courtesy of Twitch, goes a little something like this:

"In a sleepy coastal resort community, shoppers at an underground supermarket find themselves terrorized by a crazed bandit when the unimaginable occurs ... A monstrous freak tsunami swallows the town. Now trapped inside a flooded supermarket with an armed maniac and rushing water threatening to entomb them all in a watery grave, the imprisoned band of survivors discover they’re not alone. »

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: January 25, 2009

25 January 2009 8:43 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

It’s Sunday again and that means that it’s Weekend Wrap Up time.

This week:

We look at the weekend box office; Colin Farrell and Keira Knightley move to London Boulevard; Michael Uslan talks The Shadow; Spider-Man knows Good People; George Clooney returns to TV and Charlie’s Angels 3 appears to be heading this way!

Box Office

Paul Blart: Mall Cop and Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans are fighting it out for the top spot. Both Sony films should make about $21 million over the weekend showing that all America wants is women in skin tight Pvc and fat men in cop uniforms. There’s a movie pitch in there somewhere.

Brendan Fraser’s lucky streak at the box office ran out with Inkheart bagging just $2 million on Friday. A weekend of maybe $6.5 million should mean that Fraser will be knocking at Universal’s door come Monday looking for a fourth Mummy movie. »

The Shadow May Actually Become The Shadows

21 January 2009 4:36 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Way, way back in 2006 we covered the confirmed involvement of Sam Raimi with the adaptation of 1930's pulp comic property The Shadow, from Street and Smith Publications, who printed a large number of the classic pulp series from the 30's and 40's. The comic was previously adapted in 1994 as a vehicle for Alec Baldwin. Since then, it's been quiet. Too quiet. That is, until now. MTV caught up with co-producer Michael Uslan (who's sharing producing duties with Sam Raimi) who revealed some details about the film that seem to be sending The Shadow in some bizarre directions, including switching up the identity. "I think the one thing going in, is we all see The Shadow as more of a force of nature than a specific person in a secret identity. The Shadow may actually be many people." Say what? The "force of »
