Stupid H2O Motion Pictures sent everyone else some concept art for The Gate 3D except us, but that is Ok because I just stole it anyway. The most exciting part is that Alex Winter will be directing. Winter not only played "Bill" in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure but he also gave us the wonderful cult/comedy Freaked. He is truly a great man and hopefully The Gate 3D will be just as good.
"In keeping with the original, The Gate 3D will be a PG-13 children’s fantasy that will provide the emotional rollercoaster ride of a horror film, without the blood and guts, and without resorting to the tool shed. No sledgehammers or chainsaws will be used in this movie!"

H2O Motion Pictures has released stills and information on the Alex Winter (Yes, Bill from Bill & Ted) directed remake of Tibor Takács’ original film. One of the most interesting tidbits is that H.R. Giger – known by most as the creature designer of the Alien from Alien – will be providing New Creature Design based off of the original designs by Randall William Cook. Based off the stills released, they look practically the same as the original creatures. So, I’m hoping that Giger is creating some new demons for our eyes to see.
Here is some of the synopsis straight from the press release:
When best friends Miles and Terry discover a mysterious crystalline rock in Miles’s back yard, they
quickly dig up the lawn in search of more.
Instead, they unearth the Gate—the opening to an underground chamber containing terrifying evil.
The teenagers soon realize the horror they have unleashed,

One remake we're looking forward to that has a really good chance of being good is Alex Winter's redux of The Gate in 3D. If Winter can capture just a fraction of the original film's charm then we're pretty damned golden. Some concept art snuck online today along with a boat load of details about the film.
Winter will be working from a script penned by himself and Kerric Macdonald. Charlotte Huggins (Journey to the Center of the Earth) and Andras Hamori are producing. The legendary H.R. Giger will be designing the creatures
Synopsis

As we all, know, there were plenty of 80’s and 90’s film heroes. From Indiana Jones to Marty McFly to Howard the Duck, there was definitely no shortage of strong protagonists for that decade. Which is why it was nice to get two reluctant heroes that really had no idea what was going on, in the forms of Theodore “Ted” Logan and William S. ‘Bill” Preston Esquire.
The two Bill & Ted films not only spoke to a generation, but were also pretty coherent time travel stories. Since 1991’s Bogus Journey, the dynamic duo made a split, Keanu going off to star in a few small films about a computer program, and Alex Winter switching roles to behind the camera, directing such projects as 1993’s Freaked and becoming the go-to director for the Ben 10 live action films.
We got the chance to chat with Winter about directing the Ben 10 films including the newest,

Varmpire's Assistant a Solid Vampire Movie

Well, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant is Paul Weitz.s best solo movie. I can.t even really say things like that anymore because people have me figured out. It.s also the best of the recent crop of vampire shows and movies, but also see my reviews of those for context. It has promise, but I certainly don.t care if they never complete the series as movies.
Review: Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant
It.s got a Tim Burton-y vibe, like the old Tim Burton of whimsical freaks we love. The music sounds all Danny Elfman-y even though it.s not and the credits are animated. The tone towards .normal. people is good and irreverent, with parental love literally tied to grades and super arch one dimensional adults. Yes, we get it. The idea that the oppressive life plan leads to happiness is actually false.

To promote Lionsgate's special edition of the 1987 film The Gate , which introduced movie-goers to a pint-sized Stephen Dorff, director Tibor Takács spoke with ShockTillYouDrop.com about his hellish creation. While that full chat is coming soon for you reading pleasure, we extracted this nugget. We had him comment on the forthcoming 3-D remake of The Gate which is being directed by Alex Winter ( Freaked ).
"I hope they can revisit the enchanted tone we had in the first Gate ," he muses. "Knowing the realities of today's marketplace and the deal they set up, that might not be in the cards. I hope they remember that the concept of The Gate . The central idea of digging a hole in your backyard and unleashing demons is a PG-13 idea meant for kids and any adults

I Heart Horror: Scores

Hello fiends! Miss me? Awww…stop it now. I’m back this week to talk about film scores in the genre I love. They are iconic. This is a known fact. Even people that aren’t familiar with the genre as much as film geeks are know when they are hearing the music that was designed to creep them out. I recall a couple of years back on my normal weekly visits to Best Buy, I would go to the keyboard section and play Carpenter’s simplistic, but effective, theme from ‘Halloween’. Most people knew what film it was from and would comment on how it creeped them out. Hell, sometimes I would get a story out of it from a random stranger. With the horror genre, the score and themes of a film are a character. It can set the mood or just have a catchy melody or just

The Gate Remake Gets Financed, Shooting This Summer

I understand the role remakes play in Hollywood and for the most part I'm fine with it. But when I can't get through a single work day without reporting on another remake, the grind gets a old. Today it's a corker: Bloody-Disgusting reports that Alex Winter (yeah, that Bill and Ted Alex Winter) has found financing for his proposed 3D remake of The Gate, which origially starred a very young and round-faced Stephen Dorff as a kid who finds a gate to a prison containing ancient demons. Naturally, they want to take over the world, just like the army of remakes we've been facing down for the last few years.
Granted, Winter is the guy who co-directed the fun, weird and nearly forgotten Freaked!, so if anyone is going to revive a story of backyard demons and heavy metal, I'm glad it's him. Bd's report says production company H2O

Alex Winter Finally Unlocks The Gate

Alex Winter’s Freaked remains one of the most amazingly underrated films I’ve ever seen. In fact, I love it so much that it has bought the former Bill & Ted star eternal goodwill in my eyes. Normally I balk at the prospect of horror films of my youth being remade, but you can’t seem to escape that fate these days. And with Alex Winter at the helm, I’m actually looking forward to the updated version of the Tibor Takacs flick The Gate.
For a while mum was the word concerning this project, but today Screen Daily is reporting that cameras are one step closer to rolling, thanks to an allocation of funds from a German investment firm.
The UK-born actor-director’s remake of the 1987 horror film will begin production at Mmc Studios in Cologne in the late summer. The film has also received $1.2m (€900,000) from Düsseldorf’s Filmstiftung Nrw.

Welcome to The Morning Read. Like I said, I'm out the door and on my way to E3 today, so I'm going to try to get this done and still not shortchange you guys at all. First, I'd just like to say that this trips me out. There's an incredible piece over at The Art Of The Title about the opening credit design for Alex Winter's "Freaked," and that may sound like an odd subject for one of the best pieces I've read in a while about any aspect of film production, but it shouldn't be a surprise at this point.

Several months back, we had heard reports that Alex Winter was attached to direct a 3D remake of cult favorite The Gate. Shock Till You Drop is now confirming this from the man himself who recently attended a screening of Freaked at the New Beverly Theater this past weekend. He told the audience there that he's currently in pre-production on the Gate update!
While most genre fans may recognize Winter in front of the camera in such films as The Lost Boys and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Winter made the segue way into directing starting with his debut Freaked and following it up with the highly underrated Fever (starring Henry Thomas). Most recently, he's been directing episodes of the Cartoon Network's Ben 10.
The original The Gate was directed by Tibor Takacs from a script by Michael Nankin and starred Stephen Dorff, Louis Tripp, Christa Denton and Carl Kraines.

Update: At a midnight screening of Freaked at the New Beverly in Los Angeles, Winter confirmed he is currently attached to The Gate 3D redo and is now in pre-production!
There's a new director on board the remake of The Gate and it's a perfect fit. According to Production Weekly, Alex Winter ( Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure , and, Bogus Journey ) is tackling the redo of the hellish 1987 creature feature. Furthermore, he's doing it in 3-D.
Winter's been juggling an acting, writing and directing career for years since his "Bill" days. In '93 he helmed the FX-heavy comedy Freaked (a fave of mine) and Fever in '99. Recently he's been directing episodes of Ben 10 for the Cartoon Network. Winter's sensibilities seem ideal for The Gate 's tale of

Several months ago, Randall Cook let the word out that he was no longer attached to the proposed 3D remake of The Gate. The project was thought to be dead... that is until today's post on Production Weekly.com! The publication says that Alex Winter is attached to direct. While most genre fans may recognize Winter in front of the camera in such films as The Lost Boys and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Winter made the segue way into directing starting with his debut Freaked and following it up with the highly underrated Fever (starring Henry Thomas). Alex Winter Signs on for Gate Remake

Now this is some pretty damn cool news. Production Weekly reported today that Alex Winter (Freaked, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure) is now attached to direct the remake of Tibor Takács’ classic 1987 kids-in-peril movie, The Gate.
Freaked was Winter’s directing debut, followed up a few years later by the far more subtle Fever with Henry Thomas. Outside of Bill & Ted, he’s best known for his badass 90’s MTV show “The Idiot Box”, which really needs to find a DVD release someday.
Pw says that there’s a good chance the remake will be in 3D, which is cool news, especially since we first mentioned the possibility back in 2007. Keep it here for Gate updates as more details are revealed!
