Joe Eszterhas (”Basic”, “Showgirls”, “Sliver”) is reportedly working on a new project, writing a script that is about The Virgin of Guadalupe, a vision who appeared to a Mexican peasant in the 16th century. The legend of this vision is widely credited as the instigation of the spread of Catholicism in Latin America. Eszterhas is working on the script for Mpower Pictures, the print company run by Stephen McEveety, the producer behind Mel Gibson’s “The Passion Of The Christ”. Even if the name Joe Eszterhas isn't immediately familiar to you, the resume certainly should be: "Showgirls," "Basic Instinct," "Jade," "Sliver"... a string of mid-'90s pulp classics marked by preposterous dialogue, hilarious performances and, in several cases, Sharon Stone. And no, none of these are comedies. Not intentional ones anyway.
I kid because I love. Eszterhas is a veteran writer whose work has gotten somewhat of a bad rap. "Showgirls" may not be high art, but it is thoroughly entertaining in all of its trashy glory. Well the writer, who hasn't put out a project since the 2006 Hungarian production "Children of Glory," is coming back to pen a script about the Virgin of Guadalupe, according to a report in Variety.

Or at least, he's found someone who's found God, in this case the virgin of Guadalupe, a mystical vision who appeared to a peasant in sixteenth century Mexico. The legend is widely credited with speeding the spread of Catholicism across Latin America.Eszterhas, who gave us a decade of sexually-charged power thrillers, from Jagged Edge to Basic Instinct and Sliver, is working on the so-far untitled script for Mpower Pictures, the inprint set up by The Passion Of The Christ producer Stephen McEveety.It's been a long journey from Showgirls to God's girl.
