Cinematical Seven: Alec Baldwin is God

22 December 2009 7:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

He's thickened around the waist and his hair has grayed, yet the boyish charm remains. As 58-year-old Jake in Nancy Meyers' It's Complicated, which opens on Friday, Alec Baldwin (for the record: 51 years of age) epitomizes the ladies' man gone only slightly to seed. He exudes a husky masculinity, his face cracking wide open with joy when he unexpectedly beds his ex-wife Jane (Meryl Streep). It's not so much a devilish triumph as it is a recognition that his wildest dreams have come true: he can't believe how lucky he is.

Streep is the star but Baldwin is the motor that drives the story -- even if he is more of a burr under the saddle. It's a sterling performance, fully deserving of awards consideration, and a potent reminder that, given the right role and the right framework, Alec Baldwin's complicated charm easily commands the spotlight. Alec Baldwin: don't be a closer

2 December 2009 4:36 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Last month, The Guardian launched a campaign to rescue Nicolas Cage. Today, we're coming to the aid of Alec Baldwin

Yesterday's news that Alec Baldwin plans to quit acting wasn't particularly surprising (it's a promise he's made several times before). But it was, still, saddening. When other actors threaten to leave the profession - invariably because their egos have convinced them that they'd make brilliant politicians - you know that the giant salary and global adoration will always pull them back in.

But Baldwin's announcement was depressing not just because he seems convinced of his intentions this time, but because he's arguably one of the best actors around. To lose him purely because he can, sometimes, be a bit of a sourpuss borders on the tragic.

Fortunately he's not threatening to retire until 2012, so we've got plenty of time to change his mind. By hook or by crook, we need »

Once Alec Baldwin Quits Acting, What Jobs Should He Pursue?

1 December 2009 12:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Alec Baldwin is quitting acting. The "30 Rock" star and future co-host of the Academy Awards plans to vacate the big screen forever in a few short years.

The Hollywood Reporter caught a glimpse of Baldwin's upcoming interview with Men's Journal, in which the actor reportedly remarked, "I don't have any interest in acting anymore ... Movies are a part of my past. It's been 30 years. I'm not young, but I have time to do something else."

Baldwin, who plans to continue his role on "30 Rock" for a few years before retiring, has previously talked about a potential political future, but he certainly has his options when it comes to the job market. After all, who wouldn't want to hire Baldwin for their son's Bar Mitzvah or as a cruise ship singer?

But Baldwin shouldn't limit himself to those options — here are five other jobs that he'd excel at.

Their Best Role: Nicole Kidman in 'To Die For'

29 November 2009 2:33 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Welcome to a new series here on Cinematical where we select an actor or actress and the role we think is their all time best.

There is no doubt about it, Nicole Kidman is a big old movie star. But, what's always struck me as a little odd is that when you ask most people what they think of the actress, more often than not the reactions aren't all that positive. As for box-office, it's not like her numbers are going to blow you away either. But neither of those things have stopped Kidman from joining the ranks of A list actresses. So yeah, her career has spanned two continents and she has become an icon of glamor, but when it comes to her work as an actress, I happen to think that she peaked in 1995 in Gus Van Sant's dark comedy, To Die For. In Van Sant's film, »

30 Rock Season 3 DVD Review

2 October 2009 6:30 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

After having finished watching the entirety of season 3of 30 Rock, two things came to me. One is that 30 Rock - especially among its niche following - is the most quotable show around these days. From Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) doing her Muppet walk or saying “what the what?”to “I want to go there” to Baldwin paying homage to Malice, without having seen this season of 30 Rock at all, much of it was familiar by remembering tweets and things people said. My Review after the jump.

The second thing that sprang to mind was that the pilot of 30 Rock was obscenely terrible. Oh, there were moments, but I remember when the show debuted, and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip came out around the same time and seemed like it might be something awesome. Both shows were about taking SNL down a bit or at least tweaking it, with 30 Rock the home team, »

Sam Jackson Set For Rape: A Love Story

1 March 2009 10:44 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Samuel L. Jackson has signed on to star in the drama, Rape: A Love Story.Based on a searing, harrowing novella by Joyce Carol Oates, the movie – directed by Harold Becker – will tell the story of Teena MacGuire (Maria Bello), a young mother who is brutally gang-raped and left for dead, in an attack witnessed by her 12 year-old daughter (Abigail Breslin).Jackson will play a cop who, appalled by Teena’s plight and a legal miscarriage of justice, takes the law into his own hands in an attempt to punish her attackers. The cop in the novella is considerably younger than Jackson, so it’ll be interesting to see what other changes will be made for the movie. The provocative title, by the way, refers to the bond that Breslin’s Bethie forges with the cop in the aftermath of the rape. The movie will be Becker’s first since Domestic Disturbance, »
