Academy invitee Eddie Redmayne in 'The Theory of Everything.' Academy invites 322 new members: 'More diverse and inclusive list of filmmakers and artists than ever before' The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has offered membership to 322 individuals "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures." According to the Academy's press release, "those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy's membership in 2015." In case all 322 potential new members say an enthusiastic Yes, that means an injection of new blood representing about 5 percent of the Academy's current membership. In the words of Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs (as quoted in the press release), in 2015 "our branches have recognized a more diverse and inclusive list of filmmakers and artists than ever before, and we look forward to adding their creativity, ideas and experience to our organization." In recent years, the Academy membership has...

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

On Saturday, the publishers and creators of Boom! Studios assembled for a panel in which they discussed Boom!’s founding and some fun stories from its early days as well as its vision going into its ten year anniversary. There were a few announcements for some potentially groundbreaking projects from creators you may recognize. The panelists were Boom! founder/CEO Ross Richie, publisher Filip Sablik, editor-in-chief Matt Gagnon, and writers Mark Waid (Irredeemable), Marguerite Bennett (Sleepy Hollow), and James Tynion IV (The Woods). Frank Cho (Liberty Meadows) made a surprise appearance, and other creators showed up via pre-recorded video.
Ross Richie opened up the panel by talking about how he founded Boom! in his own bedroom with prompting from comics veteran Keith Giffen (Justice League International, Annihilation) based on the principle of partnership between a company and its creators. Publisher Filip Sablik said that over the past year, Boom! has...

The charismatic star of the Iron Man trilogy earned $75m in the past year. Not bad for a drug addict the studios once shunned
Fifteen years ago, Robert Downey Jr was sleeping on his assistant's sofa, addicted to heroin, cocaine and alcohol, and with only the first of several prison and rehab spells behind him. Even in Hollywood, where the most extreme appetites will be accommodated by the entertainment industry, his screw-ups had become too extravagant and numerous to hush up. His $2m asking-price had dropped 75% and he was virtually uninsurable.
Concerned friends described him as a "lovable tornado". Film-maker Mike Figgis, who directed Downey as an artist with Aids in 1997's One Night Stand, recalls him arriving for their introductory meeting barefoot, high and brandishing a handgun. "Why have you got a gun?" asked a concerned Figgis. "Oh, I didn't want to leave it in my car," Downey deadpanned.

Broadcast's final album, atypical as it may be, serves as a reminder of what a remarkable band they were
When Broadcast's Trish Keenan died of pneumonia in January 2011, it brought a sudden and shocking end to one of Britain's most singular bands. They emerged in 1996, not so much the height of Britpop as the zenith of its prematurely wizened kid brother, dubbed "Noelrock" by NME: trudging bloke-rock fast-tracked into the charts by the patronage of the then-omnipotent elder Gallagher brother, a man whose music tastes gave every impression of running to "a Saturday night session on a pub jukebox", as John Harris waspishly noted in his book The Last Party. Here it seemed, was proof that what you once might have called indie music had succeeded in taking over the mainstream largely by narrowing its horizons.
By contrast, Broadcast's sound suggested a boundless world of hitherto-unexplored possibilities. Their starting point...

North American anime distributor Funimation has streamed the entire Sengoku Basara: The Last Party film with its English dub on Friday, and the stream was, unfortunately, available for this weekend only.
The stream promotes Funimation’s Blu-ray/DVD combo release of the 2011 film on November 6th, 2012 – which is on Tuesday – so you won’t have to wait too long to see it, in case you’ve missed the streaming.
The feature film was announced in 2010 after the final Sengoku Basara: Samurai Kings 2 television episode, and it opened in Japan in June of 2011. Sengoku Basara: The Last Party continues the story after the fall of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, as Japan plunges into chaos and subordinate Ishida Mitsunari looks to seek revenge against Date Masamune and features the voices of Sôichiro Hoshi, Kazuya Nakai and Tôru Ôkawa.
Funimation has previously released both Sengoku Basara television series in North America.

Ke$ha is a singer who tweets photos of herself peeing in the street, has the words "Suck It" tattooed on her bottom lip and has described herself as the "dirty little sister" of pop music.
So when she tweeted a nude photo of herself getting ready for last night's Vma awards, we were a little nervous as to what we could expect on the red carpet. She's not exactly a paragon of class, but the 25-year-old took a shower, washed and brushed her hair and showed up to last night's MTV Video Music Awards looking better than we've ever seen her look in quite some time.
"I wanted to look naked with some glitz on my bits," Ke$ha told Us Weekly of the Zaldy dress that she helped design.
The singer also announced that her new single "Die Young" is coming out this month and told E! News...

The Directors Guild of America has been celebrating their 75th anniversary with a series of panels and events at the DGA Theater on West 57th Street called 'Game Changers.' Last Thursday, they presented a fascinating master class on documentary filmmaking, with doc A-listers sharing clips from their filmographies and engaging in two terrific panel discussions. First up, DGA President Michael Apted - himself an acclaimed documentarian, with the seven films (to date) in his 7 Up series complementing his narrative film career - welcomed the audience, celebrating the documentary films that 'inform, illuminate, and influence' audiences. Director Marc Levin (Slam) introduced the first panel with a clip reel, highlighting films from filmmakers whose work might be categorized as observational documentary - 'directors [who are] defenders of the very idea of creative rights and visions' in this era where such visions can be stifled. The very entertaining and thought-provoking clip reel included the...

Mongolian Death Worm is another of those Syfy original movies that doesn’t fail to disappoint. I understand these kinds of films are low budget and don’t set out to create a vehicle to examine the human condition; instead its only goal is to thrill its viewers, and there’s nothing paltry about that in this medium. Thing is, even with all the Mongolian Death Worms writhing around as big as cars, hunting human flesh, there’s not a single thrilling scene in the entire movie.
The story involves three separate parties in Mongolia affected by the Mongolian Death Worms. One party tries drilling for oil, but the giant worms’ underground existence disturbs the oil pumps. The second party is headed by an adventurer (played by Sean Patrick Flannery) searching for Ghengis Khan’s treasure, and by detecting tremors in the ground created by the killer worms he can trace its location – why,...

Co-op Of The Damned marks the directorial debut for series creator Ned Ehrbar (Hitler Vs. Lincoln) who collaborated with entertainment executive Chad Steers (The Spiderwick Chronicles). 40 years into his movie career, Robert Downey, Jr. is finally following in his father's footsteps and looking to make his directorial debut, according to Deadline. Surprisingly the Iron Man star hasn't done much behind the camera, not even as a producer. But that is changing now that he and wife Susan Downey have set up Team Downey, a production company at Warner Bros., through which they're looking for the right project for Rdj's unproven eye. I wouldn't be surprised if the execs at the WB have already added him to the long and ridiculous list of potential Hobbit helmers, but it is seriously fun to ponder what kind of film would be best for the guy. I recommend he start out with a first-person documentary film, along the lines of The Last Party. But then again, I'd also like to see if he can garner great performances from other actors.

Robert Downey, Jr. has pulled off an incredible feat in his career, going from nearly less than zero for around 25 years to box office hero in the last two. Aside from supporting roles in a few popular movies, Mr. Downey could have been labeled box office poison for most of his career, better known for the poisons he was putting into his system than for his movies. But despite so many commercial strikes, Hollywood kept letting him play, and it finally paid off in 2008. Following supporting work in movies like Back to School and Weird Science, Robert Downey, Jr.'s first at-bat as a leading man was The Pick-Up Artist in 1987, playing a womanizer opposite Molly Ringwald. The comedy wasn't disastrous in its first September weekend, grossing $4.5 million at 1,129 theaters, but it was overshadowed by the debut of Fatal Attraction that same weekend and fizzled out rapidly by the era's standards,...

Sundance Channel is taking an in-depth look at the challenges facing Newark, N.J., in a new documentary series executive produced by Forest Whitaker and filmmakers Marc Levin and Mark Benjamin.
"Brick City" will center on Newark Mayor Cory Booker, local citizens and key figures from real estate developers to former gang members as they try to remake the city, working to stamp out violence, poverty and corruption and make improvements in housing, employment and education.
Levin ("Slam") and Benjamin ("The Last Party") also direct the series, which will debut with six half-hour episodes in third-quarter 2009. The series will take place over the span of about a year so viewers can see whether things in Newark change.
"This docu series touches on everything that's important to Sundance: economics; politics; well-told, compelling stories about social justice; environmental issues; and questions about developers moving in," Sundance executive vp and Gm Laura Michal¬chyshyn said.
