The Walt Disney Company has announced that Disney Studios has started production on a Chinese version of High School Musical for release in theaters in summer 2010:
The Walt Disney Company in China today announced the start of production on its third local co-production project in just two years, Disney High School Musical: China. Working with local partners Shanghai Media Group (Smg) and Huayi Brothers Media Corporation, the movie is planned for cinematic release in summer 2010.
Under development for over a year, and created uniquely for Chinese audiences, Disney High School Musical: China is the story of a new student who meets a gifted young man with whom she shares a secret passion for singing. With the help of their friends they overcome the odds to win an inter-school singing competition, and discover their true calling in the process.

At this point, there’s really no debate as to whether or not Bruce Lee was the coolest man to ever pick up a pair of nunchucks, or even punch anyone in the face (which pits him against such legendary face-punchers such as Sean Connery and Harrison Ford); it’s pretty much a given. The man’s accomplishments not only in martial arts, but also in philosophy and cultural advancement (he was just about the first Asian person to portray a leading Asian character in television or film), dwarf those of nearly any living media figure, and have firmly cemented his reputation as one of the leading folk heroes of the Twentieth Century. Given all that, it’s too bad that How Bruce Lee Changed The World doesn’t measure up a little better. With a title as daunting and ambitious as that, you’d think that those involved would …

A series of projects about martial arts legend and movie star Bruce Lee are in development, including a three-part biopic and a documentary about his life. The latter would be shown exclusively in Lee’s home-turned-museum, which was donated to the Hong Kong government earlier this year.
The first of the three Bruce Lee movies is scheduled to start shooting in October with actor Tony Leung Ka-fai playing the legend's father. It is scheduled for release on November 27, 2010, which marks the 70th anniversary of Lee's birth. The estimated cost is 50 million yuan ($7.3 million).
Variety reports the film, which is being produced by Li Chen and Manfred Wong for release by China's J.A. Media, has the cooperation of the Lee family, many of whom appeared at a press conference for the project on Monday.
"We've read many books and seen many movies about Bruce Lee, but there are many inaccuracies in them, …

One of pop culture's coolest and most influential icons will be immortalized in biopic, but unlike Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, it will come from his home country. A "historically accurate account" of the inhuman martial artist has been authorized by his surviving brother and sister, who would like to see his story as a series of three films that will portray the "real Bruce Lee" and correct the "many inaccuracies" of the past movies and books about him. The …

You might be asking what's wrong with the first Bruce Lee bio-pic, Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story? My answer is, not much, really. I mean, it's a bio-pic so it has its disappointments, but I thought Jason Scott Lee was good. But we're about to get another Bruce Lee movie anyway.
Frankly, I'm looking forward to it because it's going to star Tony Leung, and Bruce's brother, Robert Lee, says this won't contain the many inaccuracies about Lee's life that have cropped up since his death in 1973. The project is conceived as a trilogy, which would seem entirely too self-indulgent if this weren't a Hong Kong production about one of its national treasures, even though Lee was born in San Francisco.
He's like the Beatles of Hong Kong, so I don't have any problem with this in the first place and the addition of Leung (the Tony Leung from the …

Bollywood dusky beauty Deepika Padukone beats Hollywood star Angelina Jolie in terms of looks. 'The Fast and the Furious' director Rob Cohen acclaimed Deepika more beautiful than Angelina. "Deepika Padukone is gorgeous and is more beautiful than Angelina Jolie," Cohen said. Cohen the man behind 'The Witches of Eastwick' and 'The Fast and the Furious', 'Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story' indirectly indicated to cast Deepika in his next project as he is highly impressed with Indian beauty. No sooner Deepika Padukone stepped into Bollywood, she became the hot favorite of the filmmakers and advertisers. She had been the brand ambassador of …

While I sometimes feel guilty about the ethnocentricity of calling any film prizes "the [insert nationality] Oscars" it's convenient shorthand. I think awards junkies (and you know who you are) would be a lot more interest in "the ____ Oscars" like the Cesars (France), the Goyas (Spain), the Guldbagge (Sweden) among many others if the films were readily available for viewing and information/photos were easier to find*. I dream that someday corporate globalization will have one good cinematic result: easier access to any type of cinema instead of the interminable waits, spotty drawn out release patterns and the bewildering practice of doing all the work of getting a film on DVD and yet only making it available in one market, cutting off potential revenue.

Killer Imports is a regular feature on Film Junk where we explore foreign-language films from around the world that haven’t yet had their chance to shine. Ip Man is a martial arts movie based on a real person. Previously, I had only known Ip Man as Bruce Lee’s Wing Chun instructor. I had not known how renowned a figure he is in China. I don’t even really know how much of the movie is factual. One only has to view Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story to see how filmmakers can distort the events in someone’s life. Wing Chun is a martial art that has not been given much exposure in Western films even though Bruce Lee was a practitioner who extended some …
