Willie Garson Discusses White Collar

6 November 2009 9:28 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Willie Garson is one of the stars of the USA Network's latest hit series White Collar, which airs on Friday nights at 10 Pm Et on the USA Network. Garson recently held a conference call to discuss his role in the series, and here's what he had to say.

What was it about this particular show or about the script that drew you back to TV?

Willie Garson: Well, I found the script to be very interesting and very timely. Certainly, we all have been reading about a lot of people figuring out ways to scam and get money for doing nothing, other than figuring out a way to get over on hard working people. So I thought that was a really interesting time for a show like this.

What's the most challenging aspect of your role?

Willie Garson: That's an interesting question. The most challenging aspect was for me, »

The Shield: The Complete Series Collection - DVD Review

3 November 2009 2:17 AM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Television has always had a love affair with the occupation of .cop.. I read somewhere that the most portrayed occupation in television and movies is a police officer. Whether good or bad or slightly a little of both, we love to watch the men and women in blue that live inside crime dramas. The .police officer. we identify with has had to evolve. From early cop shows like the clean-cut, one dimensional Dragnet to the ground breaking .80s Hill Street Blues, and even later to the .90s NYPD Blue - which introduced us to Detective Sipowicz. As an audience, we had to evolve too thanks to history and the way we view the job of a cop. »

Paige Turco plays a lesbian (again) in "The Stepfather"

22 October 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

It's probably safe to say that most of those heading to theaters to see the remake of The Stepfather are going for its young male star, Gossip Girl's Penn Badgley. But maybe some viewers have also heard that Sela Ward plays his unsuspecting mother who falls for the killer (Dylan Walsh) trying to destroy her family, and they want to see her in action.

Another incentive to seeing The Stepfather, besides it being close to Halloween and prime scary movie time, is that Paige Turco shows up as Sela's sister, Jackie, a lesbian in a relationship with Sherry Stringfield (ER).

Jackie is a realtor who hires the stepfather to do some work for her, but begins to grow weary of him. Lesbians: We're so skeptical smart.

You may recall Paige as Officer Abby Sullivan, NYPD Blue's resident lesbian cop for a season.

Or, perhaps you can only think »

Got a scoop request? An anonymous tip you’re dying to share? Just want to say hi? You can send any/all of the above to ausielloscoop@ew.com Question: There's speculation that Izzie cheats on Alex on Grey's Anatomy. Is it true? —Molly Ausiello: No, but the newlyweds will be dealt a major blow at the end of next week's episode (the best of the season, Imho). In fact, the crisis is so big that Izzie disappears for roughly five non-consecutive episodes. Btw, even though I knew Katherine Heigl's mini-hiatus was coming, Izzie's exit was no less powerful or emotional. »

Fall Frights: Session 9 (Film Review)

1 October 2009 1:51 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.

Originally Published 4/18/2001:

There are three pieces of news attending the release of Session 9:

The Location: Director Brad Anderson, who scripted with Steve Gevedon (who also appears in an acting role) was inspired to make Session 9 by the real, abandoned Danvers State Mental Hospital, in which the action is set. Seeing the movie makes one wonder why no one has used the place before; not only is the overall building shaped like a bat (with long "wings" stretching out from the main structure), but it's chockablock with twisty corridors, dark, scary basements and a pretty scary history of patients abused with barbaric "treatments." Anderson and Gevedon have come up with a great starting premise: A group of men arrive at »

Re-examining The Burning (1981)

7 September 2009 4:02 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Can you say Friday The 13th rip-off? Good, your understanding of the English language is at least sufficient (that‘s my pretend pretentiousness emerging). Now move on from that notion, because while The Burning was clearly inspired by Friday, it’s got some fantastic elements that enable the picture to stand firm on it’s own accord. First off, the “rules” of a slasher are treated with great liberty here. Neither writer Harvey Weinstein nor writer/director Tony Maylam restrict their script maneuvers by insisting upon following the beaten path. Second, the cast is absolutely terrific, showcasing an array of actors and actresses who would go on to build highly successful careers. Third, Tom Savini is on board for the special effects… need I say more on that topic? Add it all up and the result is a kick ass slasher film that could very easily be considered superior to Friday The 13th, »

Joss Whedon: Master of cult TV

For the second class in our EW University course on TV Auteurs, Prof. Adam B. Vary offers this overview of the TV career of Joss Whedon, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Dollhouse. Also, check out this photo gallery of our favorite shows by four legendary showrunners. What Stephen Bochco (Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law, NYPD Blue), Norman Lear (All in the Family, The Jeffersons), and Rod Serling (The Twilight Zone) were in the 20th century television, Joss Whedon has become today: Nothing less than a television brand. His name alongside the "Created by" credit during the opening titles guarantees you are about to watch a show that swings for the fences; a show as keenly attuned to its female characters as its male ones; a show that tackles Big Ideas and Big Themes without skimping on Great Entertainment; a show that is unafraid to Go There, from allowing the »

Eight of TV's toughest interrogators

26 August 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

The fine art of interrogation may seem lost thanks to suspects lawyering up and the Miranda warning. Whatever happened to the days when a snarling cop could throw a perp against a brick wall to get him to squeal? Or a sly questioner could finagle a confession by laying on a guilt trip? Still, there are some very clever, brilliant interrogators plying their trade on these days. In fact, when you look at these eight interrogators, you'll probably agree that they know just how to get to the truth. Here are the eight top interrogators on TV today:

8. Captain James Brass, CSI

Brass is the most "old school" of all these interrogators. He's like Andy Sipowicz from NYPD Blue, only without the violence. Brass talks to suspects with a modicum of respect, but a healthy cynicism. He's seen it all and knows the truth is in there somewhere. He asks »

Grey's Anatomy Season Premiere Details

24 August 2009 12:50 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

For a while it seemed like Grey's Anatomy could do no wrong, until one of the most outspoken critics of the show turned out to be one of the lead actresses.  Katherine Heigl's diva-ish withdrawal from Emmy consideration – or would that be non-submittance? – on the grounds the the writing was 'not worthy' seemed to open the question to public debate.  Well, the past is behind us now and not only has Grey's Anatomy redeemed itself by turning in one nail biter of a season finale last year, it did so in a way that also gave the writers the opportunity to nix Heigl herself.  Since they didn't, we can assume all egos are in check and ready to move forward. Of course, there is the hanging question mark of what a T.R.Knight-less Grey's Anatomy dynamic will look like, and for that we call your attention to September 10th, »

Twilight Saga Daily Dosage - 08/03/09

3 August 2009 3:40 PM, PDT | ScreenStar | See recent ScreenStar news »

Happy August! So much Twilight news to fill you in on and so little time. Yes, still after two weeks we are talking about Comic-Con. So much happened in such a short period of time that we will be reporting on it forever, or so it seems. Newby vampire Jamie Campbell Bower was having a little too much fun at Comic-Con and told a fib to MTV that got some fans very upset. Bower even came out and put up an official apology on Twitter just in case he did offend his fans and the fans of Twilight. New Moon posters have arrived and Edward Cullen/Robert Pattinson looks daunting in the somewhat mysterious new poster. Are you digging the new pics of Edward or are they too dark for your taste? Speaking of RPatty, he was just confirmed to appear at the 2009 Teen Choice Awards with the rest of his cast mates, »

Emmy nominations: '30 Rock' explosion, '24' implosion, 'Family Guy' wreaks havoc, newcomers snubbed in expanded series races

16 July 2009 2:09 PM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

• Both of last year's series champs -- comedy "30 Rock" and drama "Mad Men" -- lead the field in their respective categories again this year. "30 Rock" broke the record for nominations it set last year with 17 bids by landing 22 nods this year. "Mad Men" repeated with 16 nominations, far off the 27 nods for the first season of "NYPD Blue" in 1994. "30 Rock" won seven of its races last year and "Mad Men" prevailed in six. • After being benched last year because of the writers strike, former Emmy powerhouse "24" made a lackluster return to the race this year, failing to score bids for either series or TV movie ("24: Redemption"). Kiefer Sutherland, who was a fixture in the best actor in a drama series category, was snubbed for the first time in the show's seven years. He had to make do with a nod in the TV movie actor race for the one-off "24: Redemption. »

[DVD Review] Fracture

6 July 2009 11:34 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

When Grisham was king of the novel-to-movie adaptation, a title stolen briefly from the hands of Stephen King, law dramas would hit theaters every year and would consistently entertain. As the Hollywood system is wont to do, the introduction of Grisham-films to the theatrical sphere spurred a mass exodus of other legal dramas from the page to the screen. But then there was a lull. It seemed for quite a while that stories about court cases were best shown on television – or maybe it was that audiences were inundated with Law & Order spin-offs to the point that no one wanted to pay to see them in theaters – who knows. The point is, when Fracture rolled around in 2007 it actually seemed fresh. Absence truly does make the heart grow fonder.

But the heart is fickle; or rather, the heart isn’t so easily fooled by the peak-a-boo antics of a film genre. »
