The first 12 episodes were based on the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. Larroquette is a recovering alcoholic in real life.
The series' original working title was "Crossroads," but NBC insisted on "The John Larroquette Show." Larroquette did not want his name in the title.
Larroquette owns the sign in John Hemingway's office that read "This Is A Dark Ride."
The show's tone was lightened after the first season.
The antenna channel RewindTV added the show to its lineup in January 2022, playing it only on Sundays. During the first run-through for the channel, they did not show episodes five and seven through twelve of season four before starting the show over.
