In the opening image of “I Saw the TV Glow” the camera moves slowly down the middle of a suburban street. Dusk, it’s dark, but the sky has a hint of electric blue, as the camera passes over children’s chalk drawings that pop from the pavement like incandescent lights toward a neon-lit ice cream truck playing a slowed down children’s tune. This establishing shot embodies the magical, but slightly eery tone of the first half of the film and the childhood world of Owen, who we cut to watching television in the dark.

‘I Saw the TV Glow’ Review: Justice Smith in a Knockout Teen Drama About Art, Obsession and Identity
Self-discovery can be a painful process, ripping apart everything you thought you knew about the world and your place in it. But even more painful and terrifying is the denial of self. Looking in the mirror and turning away from the truth staring right back at you. It’s hard to understand why we do it — if we only get one life, why not live it authentically? And what happens to us when we live with parts of ourselves sealed away? What kind of life is that? How can anyone love you when you’re never really there?
Owen (Justice Smith) is a gentle, soft-spoken teen, afraid to break out of his shell. He’s been that way since he was a child, growing up with his attentive mother (Danielle Deadwyler) and distant father (Fred Durst). Though he feels drawn to his mother, quietly admiring her beauty and emotional honesty,...

Real Estate have announced their upcoming album, Daniel, set for release on February 23rd, 2024 via Domino Recording Co. As a preview, the New Jersey outfit has shared their first single from the album, “Water Underground,” and announced a 2024 North American tour.
Daniel marks Real Estate’s first full-length album since their 2020 release, The Main Thing, and is their sixth studio LP. Recorded with Grammy-winning producer Daniel Tashian, Daniel aims to “connect the uninhibited wonder of Real Estate’s earliest work with the earned perspective of adulthood.” The band reunited in Nashville for the album, sharing a rental space after being separated from each other for the past few years.
As for “Water Underground,” Martin Courtney of Real Estate said that the single is a song about writing songs. “I think ‘Water Underground’ is like the unconscious, the mysterious part of your brain where creativity comes from,” he said in a press release.

With the exception of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, the MCU has been in a bit of a downward spiral in terms of their creative output. Stories that once felt fresh and were heralded for their connectivity, have now fallen flat and become mundane. It appears that decline hit a head this weekend as The Marvels is pacing to become the lowest opening ever for an MCU film with a take between $47-$52 million (per Deadline), beating out the previous lowest: $55.4 million earned by the Edward Norton fronted The Incredible Hulk.
So where did this one go wrong? Many will blame the actors strike for its failure with the actors unable to promote their film until just last night when Brie Larson appeared on The Tonight Show. That argument doesn’t hold much weight as films such as Five Nights at Freddy’s have been able to overcome the lack of promotion.

Not even just Halloween, special Halloween programming. For me, it all started with It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, the The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror and then just got better and better.
Anyone remember Snick or Treat? Each year there was some kind of game or call-in number and you could win cool prizes like glow in the dark shirts, video games, VHS tapes of your favorite Nick shows, Pizza Hut gift cards, a TV, a Nickelodeon jean jacket, and I think they...

With “Dancing with the Stars” set to come back for a 32nd season this fall on ABC after spending last year on Disney+, there’s a long list of celebrities who deserve to compete on the dance floor. Two of my previous suggestions came true: Frankie Muniz (who came in third in season 25) and Kel Mitchell (who came in second in season 28). Below is a list of female stars I think the show should consider inviting to the ballroom to vie for the next Mirror Ball Trophy. Do you agree with my picks? Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post to let us know which you’d most like to see on “DWTS.” And feel free to let us know in the comments what other stars you would like to see when the show comes back in September.

If you were a kid in the 1990s and it was Saturday night, there was a good chance you were watching Snick, or Saturday Night Nickelodeon. Nickelodeon execs launched Snick in August 1992, in an effort to capture the attention of pre-teens who were otherwise at a loss for weekend-night entertainment. “We saw it both as an opportunity to program a night that was a big thing in kids’ lives and to also steal some ratings,” Herb Scannell, who was then head of programming and development for Nickelodeon, told Vanity Fair in 2017. Snick ended in 2004, but the shows that took up those two hours on Saturday night will live on in the memories of millennials everywhere. So come, take a seat on that bright orange sofa that served as the Snick mascot, and let’s relive the programming block’s glory days. The Adventures of Pete & Pete Two red-headed brothers...

The word-of-mouth party line on Tyler Taormina’s Ham on Rye is that it begins as a loose, lo-fi teen comedy — a hazy, drifting, and personality-driven series of detours through the problems of youth, like John Hughes by way of Dazed and Confused. And then, the story goes, the movie switches lanes to become something inexplicable, magically surreal and eerie in ways that cannot totally be accounted for by the end.
This is a pretty fair description … though to its great credit, this coming-of-age tale is a little strange from the start.

A stylish twist on the end-of-high-school dramedy, Tyler Taormina’s “Ham on Rye” offers the ethereal echoes of “The Virgin Suicides” with the gossamer veil of a humid summer’s day slowly lifting, but laced with notes of John Hughes on a steady micro-dose of LSD. That’s to say things are always off-kilter in this movie but the exact nature of whatever is the kink in this coming-of-ager never reveals itself. And while the narrative hardly goes into the fully unhinged direction it teases, it’s .

With four decades of transformative kids’ programming from such series as “All That” to “Blue’s Clues” to “Rugrats” under its belt, Nickelodeon has been responsible for inspiring new generations of Hollywood creatives.
For comic actor Kenan Thompson, it’s easy to see how Nickelodeon’s “All That” became a training ground for his work on NBC’s late-night, much more adult sketch comedy show “Saturday Night Live.”
“All That,” Thompson says, taught him “how to play to a four-camera setup and all that good stuff — going in and out of costumes and wigs, being patient putting makeup on and rehearsing all day.”
Meanwhile, “The Big Bang Theory” showrunner Steve Holland remembers being a fan of Nick’s “The Adventures of Pete & Pete” and “Ren & Stimpy” before getting his first job in TV as an intern at Nick’s former studio in Orlando, Fla. He also landed his first...

Viacom Media Networks is undergoing another round of consolidation into four brand groups: Comedy Central, Paramount Network and TV Land under Kent Alterman; MTV, VH1, Cmt and Logo under Chris McCarthy; Bet Networks and Nickelodeon.
Kevin Kay will step down as President, Paramount Network, TV Land and Cmt following a transition period after almost three decades at Viacom. That group is now being split into two, with Paramount Network and TV Land, as well as Bellator, joining Comedy Central under Comedy Central president Alterman. The music-driven Cmt will join President Chris McCarthy’s current portfolio of MTV, VH1 and Logo. Alterman and McCarthy will continue to report to CEO Bob Bakish. There are no changes to Bet Networks or Nickelodeon.

Comedy Central president Kevin Alterman will add oversight of Viacom’s Paramount Network in a company-wide restructuring that will see the departure of current Paramount Network president Kevin Kay.
Viacom is streamlining its brand groups from five to four, with the new structure looking like this:
Comedy Central, Paramount Network and TV Land MTV, VH1, Cmt and Logo Bet Networks Nickelodeon
Alterman, while keeping his Comedy Central title, will take over duties for Paramount Network and TV Land from Kay, who will leave after a transition period. Chris McCarthy, already president of MTV, VH1 and Logo, will assume oversight of Cmt, which had also been run by Kay. There are no changes to Bet Networks or Nickelodeon.

Ever wondered what happened to the brothers from The Adventures Of Pete And Pete? Well, the younger one, Danny Tamberelli, still does a fair bit of voice acting and you can hear him specifically in Grand Theft Auto V as Michael's son. If you're looking for the double Pete experience however, you can check out The Adventures of Mike And Danny and hear both actors wax poetic about whatever.

Does anyone remember this show? In 1991 Pete and Pete was apparently a popular show, but 22 years later it seems that they might be trying to regain just a small amount of whatever glory they had back then. If you’re trying to understand it like I am then you might be just as hopelessly lost. Don’t worry, it’s okay, I had to actually go back and really look at the archives for this one. For those who did watch the show and know just what it’s all about then you could probably leave some input at the end of

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the best family-friendly show of the past or current TV season? Live-action, animated, talk, documentary, all genres are fair game.
Daniel Fienberg (@TheFienPrint), The Hollywood Reporter
I believe we’ve learned by now that the answer to all questions can be either “The Simpsons” or “Method & Red” and since this question calls for a current show, “The Simpsons” would be a truly valid answer, with its mixture of multi-tiered cultural literacy and a consistently sophisticated approach to family unity, faith and community. And I, as always, reject any snide, “That show hasn’t been good for 15 years” criticisms.
But I don’t think that’s my real answer,...

Hey Arnold!, Rocko's Modern Life and Invader Zim are all returning to life on Nickelodeon, but there could be more of your favorite shows returning to life. At Nickelodeon's Splat panel at Atx TV Festival, Chis Viscardi, the co-creator of The Adventures of Pete and Pete and current senior vice president of production and development, and animation at Nickelodeon Group, revealed there are more projects in the works of classic kid-friendly shows. What goes into selecting the beloved properties to revive? "I'd say there are two things. The first is that it has to be a property that we inherently has something to it tonally and comedically, character-wise and story-wise that can work for...

Pierce Brosnan returns to the small screen, and we couldn't be more excited!
While he might not have the best Texas accent we've ever heard, Brosnan still delivers a powerful performance as the older Eli McCullough, who is at the center of this compelling new western drama.
The Son Season 1 Episode 1 and The Son Season 1 Episode 2 introduce us to McCullough in two separate timelines. In them, we learn how the young man who survived a Comanche Indian attack becomes a ruthless cattle baron later in life.
Jacob Lofland is just as powerful as young Eli, as the two timelines converge to give us a clear picture of a man who only wants to protect what's rightfully his.
We are first introduced to Eli as a young man hunting for food for his family while his father is out of town. The family comes under attack by Comanche Indians and his mother and sister are killed.

We look back fondly at the innate weirdness of Nickelodeon's 90s show The Adventures Of Pete And Pete...
At some point in the early 1990s – I forget the exact year, but research tells me it must have been somewhere around late 1993 or early 1994 – something unbearably exciting happened in our suburb of Merseyside. The rumours went around the school playground in hushed whispers: “Have the cable vans been to your street yet?” Yes, cable TV was on its way to Crosby, meaning that for the first time, a world of viewing beyond the ordinary four terrestrial channels was available to homes without a whacking great ugly satellite dish glued to the outside.
Aside from the three major Sky titans – the football, the movies and The Simpsons – by far the biggest reason we all wanted to get cable was access to not one, not two, but three channels dedicated...

A few thoughts on the latest Horace and Pete coming up just as soon as my flight crew's late... The fourth Horace and Pete was by far the shortest to date, clocking in at a shade over 30 minutes. While I can imagine that inspiring some new complaints about the price point — I'll pay three bucks for an hour of entertainment, but not a half-hour! — I appreciate that Louis C.K. felt he only needed this amount of time to tell this week's collection of vignettes about love, sex, and loneliness. There's some elasticity of length to Louie, where he can squeeze two or three short stories into the space of one episode, or stretch one story over six episodes, or just let a single episode run slightly longer than usual. But when he's just releasing episodes digitally, there's no standard length at all to worry about. Who knows? Maybe in a week or two,...

Attention, residents of Bluffington: Nickelodeon just announced a massive, Wreck-It Ralph-type supergroup movie featuring characters from its '90s cartoons, including Rugrats, The Angry Beavers, Aaahh! Real Monsters, Ren & Stimpy, and Rocko's Modern Life. It's not quite decided how many other shows will be included in the mix, but it looks like anything is possible. You may be reunited with CatDog, for all we know. Weirder yet, part of the movie (currently entitled NickToons) will be live-action. Could this mean we'll be hanging out with Pete and Pete again? It's an overwhelming prospect. To prepare ourselves for this journey, here are ten oft-forgotten Nickelodeon cartoon characters who deserve more of our attention. ...

Filmmaker Dario Argento and singer Iggy Pop have thrown their support behind a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for a movie adaptation of the terrifying, 19th century German depiction of the Sandman.

There's "Roundhouse," "You Can't Do That on Television," and "Finders Keepers" on one end, and "The Fairly Odd Parents," "As Told By Ginger," and "The Wild Thornberrys" on the other.

Sanjay and Craig is the latest cartoon from Nickelodeon. If I’m being honest, I’m not really in the market for a new cartoon. I’ve been digging into the excellent Adventure Time and I have the ongoing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, too. Then there’s South Park. On top of this, I have non-animated TV shows to keep up with. Then there’s films to watch, comics to read and games to play. Plus a job, a family life and other trivialities like that. But certainly, my cartoons dance card is looking pretty full. On finding out the cast and influences of Sanjay and Craig, though, I decided I should at least take a look. And now I have a problem, because it...
