In the newest issue of Film Comment magazine I write about the designer Alan Peckolick, a master of lettering who was responsible for one of the great American movie posters of the ’70s, for Short Eyes. Peckolick was a student of—and eventually a business partner of—the great Herb Lubalin, and the poster above comes from a book Peckolick wrote about his mentor in 1985. Both Lubalin and Peckolick worked together on the branding for the films of the American Film Theatre, a project initiated in 1973 by producer Ely Landau to bring great theatre to movie-going audiences with low-budget, star-studded, text-faithful adaptations of a number of contemporary classics. The Quad Cinema in New York is currently playing 12 of these films through November 21.To promote the first series of films Lubalin and Peckolick gave each play its own very distinctive title treatment while also commissioning equally striking illustrations for each film.

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

Welcome to another installment of Movies to Show My Son. This is the blog series were I discuss movies I can’t way to show my son in the future. I’ll be covering my own personal experience with the movie, movie and life lessons I hope he will learn, and lastly my concerns about showing said film. This week’s film is Toy Story.
Personal Memories:
Toy Story is one of those movies that I remember exactly the first time I saw it. I did not go to the theater much as a kid so I caught up with it when it hit VHS…yes VHS. I was home sick one day and we recently picked up a copy for our family. I would like to think my being home from school and recently buying Toy Story were unrelated but I cannot guarantee that to be the case.

During The New Yorker Festival this past weekend, Michelle Williams told writer David Denby that she recently brought her daughter, 7-year-old Matilda, back to visit the set of Dawson's Creek — which took place in Wilmington, North Carolina, renamed as fictional Capeside, Massachusetts: "I actually hadn't been back since the show ended but I went back and took my daughter on vacation and saw people I hadn't seen in 10 years and went all the places that we used to go ... And it was great. It was actually a real stroke of luck to be transported there." Did she visit Leery's Fresh Fish or Screen Play Video? Maybe they stopped by Gram's house and Capeside High. Just as long as young Matilda is Team Pacey/Joey (just like her mom!), all will be right in the world.

Robert Zemeckis‘ long awaited return to live action filmmaking hits theaters soon, and in celebration of the fact Harkins Theaters hosted an online poll to find the director’s most popular movie. There was apparently a glitch of some kind… how else can you explain the fact that Used Cars didn’t win in a landslide? Instead the utterly fantastic and timeless Back to the Future was chosen, and tonight, the Harkins Valley Art theater in Tempe Az is featuring a free screening of the Michael J. Fox comedy classic. The film will be presented via a pristine digital print, and the screening will be followed by a discussion of Zemeckis’ career alongside giveaways of Flight-related merchandise and swag. Check out the complete details below, and if you go make sure to get there early! Who: Director Robert Zemeckis co-wrote (with Bob Gale) and directed “Back to the Future,” which...

Elton John was not libeled by the Times of London in two articles about tax evasion, the British High Court ruled Thursday. The singer had filed suit earlier this year after the News Corp.-owned broadsheet published the series on "The Secrets of Tax Avoiders" in June. A June 21 story headlined "Screen Play: How movie millions are moved offshore" said that John's former accountant was Patrick McKenna, the CEO of British media investment firm Ingenious Media, whom the paper said was involved in investment schemes aimed at skirting British taxes. Also read: Elton...

One of these days, someone will consider why the country with the world's toughest libel laws also has the most notorious tabloids. Until then, there's Elton John vs. Rupert Murdoch. On Wednesday, the UK's high court shot down the singer's defamation lawsuit against the UK newspaper The Times, a Murdoch-owned paper over a story about a tax avoidance scheme. Cue the Murdoch tweet. On June 21, the article in question carried the headline, "Screen Play: how movie millions are moved offshore," and mentioned Ingenious Media top executive Patrick McKenna, who was said to be John's former accountant and

There are two stories I want to tell with this glorious 1922 poster: one is about the film itself—a forgotten silent melodrama—and the sad fates of its main protagonists, and the other is about the artist Henry Clive.
The Green Temptation, a film which I’m not even sure is extant (the silent film database silentera.com says “survival status: unknown”), starred Betty Compson as Genelle, a member of the Parisian underworld who, along with her partner Gaspard, runs a travelling theatre as a ruse to pickpocket their patrons and burgle their homes while they’re watching the show. When the First World War starts, Genelle joins the Red Cross as a nurse to evade the police and after the War emigrates to America to start a new life. But her attempt to turn over a new leaf is foiled by the reappearance of Gaspard who forces her to...

It is morning, Anita is being awoken by her mother with a kiss on the forehead, a mug of hot chocolate and vanilla biscuits. Anita is a young girl with Down.s Syndrome and this is her world; protected and loving. The film starts out slowly, you are introduced to Anita, her mother, her brother and sister-in-law. The family is very close knit but you get the impression that the brother loves his sister but really can not be counted on to participate in or help with Anita.s care.
Anita is severely handicapped and has a limited knowledge of life, for example at bath time her mother tells her to wash first one arm and then the other. Anita is not even allowed to stir a pot on the stove, as her mother says, “You will burn yourself.” Anita’s world is her mother’s world and the places...

Looking for a little comic relief over the holidays? If so, look no further than the comedy/romance film It's Complicated (2009), starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, and Steve Martin. The cast itself makes this movie a sure fire winner that's certain to deliver memorable laughs, and a raised eyebrow or two. The film's plot revolves around three main characters who find themselves caught in an unlikely love triangle. Streep portrays Jane, the mother of three grown children and the owner of a bakery/restaurant. Baldwin plays her philandering ex-husband Jake, now married to a younger woman, and Steve Martin is Adam, an architect Jane hires to remodel her kitchen. Here's where it gets complicated. Jane and Jake meet up out of town for their son's graduation, and decide to have a casual dinner together, only it leads to an all-out affair. Jake, who is still married to the trophy wife...
