Sigourney Weaver Avatar Interview Yields Aliens Blu-ray Scoop

14 December 2009 9:14 AM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Sigourney Weaver recently sat down with the La Times to talk about her role as brash cigarette smoking botanist Grace Augustine in James Cameron's Avatar. Like any good reporter, interviewer Geoff Boucher made sure to ask Weaver what's next on her plate. The answer is just what Blu-ray adopters have been waiting for.

Sometime in the next few weeks, Sigourney will sit down and watch Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection to record new audio commentaries for the upcoming release of the Quadrilogy on Blu-ray Disc.

"I've never done that, watched all of them in a row," Weaver said. "I just recently made my [19-year-old] daughter watch them. She had never seen them before, believe it or not. I think she just prefers to think of me as good ol' mom, you know, not some person running around a spaceship with a flamethrower."

Lance Henriksen is in Aliens vs. Predator!

13 December 2009 7:24 PM, PST | GameRant | See recent GameRant news »

If Lance Henriksen wasn’t already cool enough with a plethora of cool roles in cool movies, he’s even more awesome now with his recent push into the video game industry.

In one of the biggest video game releases of all time, Modern Warfare 2, Lance plays the voice of General Shepherd and now, he’ll be returning to a role he made famous on screen with Aliens, Alien 3 and the first Aliens vs. Predator film by playing the voice of Bishop in the upcoming Aliens vs. Predator video game.

The new AvP title is being brought to us by Sega and Rebellion Entertainment and in it, Henriksen will be playing the character of Karl Bishop Weyland, a descendant of Charles Bishop Weyland that he played in the first Aliens vs. Predator film.

The Weylands have good genes, because they all look like Lance Henriksen. The actor, who has appeared in Aliens , Alien 3 and Avp: Aliens vs. Predator , has signed up to appear in the upcoming Aliens vs. Predator game, developed by Rebellion in the UK. Lance Henriksen will play Karl Bishop Weyland, a descendent of Charles Bishop Weyland (who Henriksen appeared as in AvP ), the founder of the infamous Weyland-Yutani corporation from the Aliens universe. He will lend his likeness and voice to the production. "They've made me look very good," said Lance Henriksen, "This is the first time I've been fully represented in a game, with my voice and how I look, and the Rebellion guys have done a great job. Dance: 'Hollywood Is Soul Destroying'

7 December 2009 11:21 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Veteran British actor Charles Dance is glad he never moved to Hollywood - because he finds the American movie business "soul destroying."

The Gosford Park star found international fame after appearing in a handful of blockbusters, including Alien 3 and Last Action Hero, in the 1990s.

But the London resident has always refused to move to California to pursue his acting career full-time, opting instead to fly over to Los Angeles every time he landed a new role.

Dance admits his lack of ambition in Hollywood may have cost him some high-profile parts, but he's adamant he's much happier living and working in his native Britain.

He says, "I've done a couple of Hollywood blockbusters and I haven't fronted either of them - I've just played the token British villain - but those films are seen all over the world. You can certainly earn more money for a studio blockbuster. Blockbusters raise your profile and they put money in your bank account, but they don't do much for the soul.

"I haven't worked in Hollywood for ten years or more. I go there to do a job - if I'm lucky enough to be asked - and come back. I don't dislike the place, but I've never camped out there. I think that would be soul-destroying."

Dance also reveals he's unimpressed with the new wave of young actors who obsess over their looks and crave fame.

He adds, "They are fiercely ambitious and very impatient. They want it now. Fame, fortune, money now - they want it all. And on the back of a reasonably successful television series, they'll get on a plane and go to California and join the ranks of hundreds of other young hopefuls with newly bleached teeth and nicely tanned skin. That was never me." »

X2 scribe Michael Dougherty details his vision for X-Men 3

9 November 2009 4:59 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Screenwriter Michael Dougherty has given more details about the ideas he had suggested to Bryan Singer for the third X-Men movie.

Dougherty co-wrote Singer's highly-regarded X2: X-Men United with Dan Harris before all three left the mutant movie series to make Superman Returns.

Fox then hired writers Zak Penn and Simon Kinberg and director Brett Ratner and the result was 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand.

A year ago, I reported on a book called Mutant Cinema: The X-Men Trilogy From Comics to Screen, which included some of Dougherty's ideas for an alternative version of the third film. (Click here to read that earlier article).

Now, in a new interview on Slashfilm to promote the DVD and Blu-ray release of Halloween-themed anthology Trick 'r Treat (pictured), his first directing effort, Dougherty has elaborated on what he wanted to do in the third X-movie had he stayed with the franchise. He speaks on a podcast, »

David Fincher Makes Peter Proud

9 November 2009 6:18 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

David Fincher’s career is pretty much flawless. You might cry “blasphemy!” simply because of Alien 3, but I’ll be very honest with you: that is not a bad entry in that series, no matter what you might believe. And then Fight Club? Zodiac? Seven?

Now, he’s working on an adaptation of the Max Ehrlich novel The Reincarnation of Peter Proud, to be scripted by Seven’s Andrew Kevin Walker. The story has already been self-adapted by the author once for a film in the mid-1970s, starring Margot Kidder.

According to THR, the film centers on a “college professor who begins having recurring dreams and nightmares and, realizing they are images of a past life, decides to search out the source of the visions. With his girlfriend in tow, he discovers a woman and her grown-up daughter who are keys to his past life.”

Yeah, that reads like a Fincher logline, »

Cast Gathers at the Edge of the World

9 November 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Actor Charles Dance's sophomore outing in the director's chair is set to be a supernatural one called The Inn at the Edge of the World . Shooting is anticipated to start sometime in the first quarter of 2010 with actors Michael Gambon ( The Omen redo), Stephen Fry ( V for Vendetta ) and Penelope Wilton ( Match Point ). That's a strong cast for this story of a group of people who spend Christmas on a remote Scottish island. Flashes of "supernatural mysticism," however, make it a holiday they'll never forget. If you recall, Dance starred in David Fincher's Alien 3 and was the villain in The Last Action Hero . He started directing with the film Ladies in Lavender . »

'Se7en' Writer And Director Reteaming

9 November 2009 3:29 AM, PST | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

David Fincher may have already had Alien 3 on his resumé when he directed the runaway hit Se7en but there is no doubt that the Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman starring thriller put him on the map, and so it will come as good news to those who have watched his career patchily develop that he is currently attached to direct an Andrew Kevin Walker adaptation of the 1975 Max Ehrlich novel (and film) The Reincarnation Of Peter Proud.

The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog has it that the adaptation will contemporize the supernatural-thriller about a college professor who starts to have visions and nightmares of a past life.

Fincher, who is just about to start shooting the Aaron Sorkin scripted The Social Network, will produce the remake alongside Se7en producer Michael De Luca reforming a powerful trinity that put together one of the best and most haunting films of the 90s. »

The Reincarnation Of David Fincher

8 November 2009 11:04 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

David Fincher's next gig, following Facebook app The Social Network which he's just started shooting, looks set to be The Reincarnation of Peter Proud. It'll re-team the director with Seven's writer Andrew Kevin Walker, who will adapt the novel by Max Ehrlich. The 35-year-old supernatural thriller involves a university lecturer's attempts to prove he's the reincarnation of somebody who died shortly before he was born, and to solve the mystery of his murder, for which the killer was never caught. It was filmed once before: a 1975 Bing Crosby production by J Lee Thompson, starring Margot Kidder and Michael Sarrazin, and adapted by Ehrlich himself. We all know David Fincher's stellar trajectory from Alien 3 to Benjamin Button, but Walker's path has been rockier. He followed Seven with the dodgy 8mm (heavily rewritten by Joel Schumacher) and Tim Burton's awesome Sleepy Hollow, but then, through uncredited rewrites »

Top Ten Working American Directors

Top Ten Working American Directors

A list like this is tricky to the point of madness. However, I'm going to save you the trouble by saying it right here, right now: Most of the choices on this list are obvious. There's a reason why certain names continually pop up whenever conversation drifts toward great American films. So there. I said it.

Yet, how do you weigh the likes of Francis Ford Coppola, a genius who delivered some of the all-time greatest films, but fizzled out 25 or so years ago, against a filmmaker like Woody Allen who has worked consistently for decades churning out both brilliant gems and disposable time wasters? How do you compare either of these directors against an auteur such as Spike Jonze who has only opened two films so far, but both are masterpieces?

In the end I just went with my gut. I knew there were »

Now in theaters everywhere is Pandorum, the third film by Christian Alvart, yet the second to hit theaters – a coincidence or maybe something a bit more telling? The film starts with two space crew members Bower (Ben Foster) and Payton (Dennis Quaid) waking up from a multi-year hyper-sleep to discover that the ship they are on is dying in power resources. Neither of them can remember the mission due to the fact that they have been sleeping for so long which has the side effect of mild to severe memory loss. How Do You Solve A Problem Like The 'Alien' Franchise?

7 August 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Many movie lovers struggle when asked what their favorite films of all time are, but not me. My answer has been and always will be "Aliens." I'm not saying that it's the very best movie ever created, but it's certainly the one that most inspired me as a fan of what the movie medium can achieve. It should therefore come as no shock that the "Alien" franchise at large is unquestionably my favorite franchise in cinema history.

I love Ellen Ripley. Sigourney Weaver holds a special place in my heart for bringing one of the most courageous, cunning and capable heroines out there to the big screen, owing no small thanks to both Ridley Scott ("Alien" director) and James Cameron ("Aliens" director). Indeed, while Scott's contributions to the "Alien" universe are enormous -- after all, he literally invented the wheel in this case -- it's the realization of Ripley that »

Director's Cut: Four Ideas For Ridley Scott's New Alien Movie

2 August 2009 6:07 PM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

Back in the days of the old Coming Attractions I had a long-running editorial column called Director's Cut. It allowed me a place to say what was on my mind and what I thought about news or events related to film. Now that CA 2.0 is up and running and I still have access to this mad scientist equipment, I thought why not slap Director's Cut on the operating table, hook it up to the lightning rod and see if I can't bring it back to life? When has that idea ever gone wrong? -- Ps

Ridley Scott is making a new Alien movie and that, my friends, is both a good and a bad thing.

On the surface Scott's involvement in resurrecting the franchise looks like it can only be a positive but once I think about it further, I think that there may be more opportunities for Sir Ridley »

Ridley Scott returns to Alien series after 30 years to direct prequel

2 August 2009 3:20 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Three Decades after his groundbreaking sci-fi horror classic Alien, Ridley Scott will return to hatch the next movie in the franchise.

Scott made the first film for Fox back in 1979 but was not involved in any of the three subsequent productions. James Cameron helmed the 1986 movie Aliens, David Fincher steered 1992's Alien 3 and Jean-Pierre Jeunet made Alien Resurrection in 1997.

There have also been two crossovers: Alien vs. Predator, directed by Paul W. S. Anderson and released in 2004; and 2007's Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, helmed by The Brothers Strause.

Scott, 71, spoke about a possible fifth film on the 2003 commentary track for the Alien DVD in the quadrilogy box set, saying he felt an origin story was the best option. He also revealed in interviews that he was actually in talks to make a fifth and final film in the franchise, but nothing came of those discussions.

But now he will at last return, »

Ridley Scott to Direct Alien Prequel!

31 July 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Several months ago, we told you that a Ridley Scott-produced Alien prequel was on the way and that the film was to be directed by Scott protege, Carl Rinsch.

Well, Great Scott! That is no longer the case.

In space, no one can hear you scream, but it would appear that the 20th Century Fox finally heard fans of the Alien franchise because they have now hired original Alien director Ridley Scott to return to the helm for the next installment of the long-running sci-fi franchise.

The long-rumored sequel reboot prequel has been gestating since 1997’s Alien Resurrection (even with the Alien Vs Predator films being produced). Scott has often publicly pondered returning to the series, but only with original star Sigourney Weaver. However, this new movie is supposed to be a prequel to Scott’s own film and not a continuation of the series, so it would appear »
