In the episode where Mark Cooper plays basketball for the Golden State Warriors, the practice scenes were taped at the Warriors' home court in Oakland, California, but the game itself was recorded at the University of California's gymnasium in Berkeley. It was an actual a preseason game against the Phoenix Suns, held in Berkeley because Kevin Johnson, an alumnus of UC Berkeley who was playing for Phoenix at the time, was having his college number retired that night. The scenes of Mark Curry playing were not specially scripted. Curry did, in fact, actually play in that specific game.
After one season of being more of an adult-oriented sitcom about a man living platonically with two female roommates, the show became more family-oriented beginning in season 2, adding Sandra Quarterman, Raven-Symoné, and Nell Carter to the cast after Dawnn Lewis left the show. The show remained family friendly for the remainder of its run.
The series finale Getting Personal (1997), premiered in its entirety in the eastern part of the United States on August 30th, 1997. On the west coast, however, ABC News preempted the show halfway through as they delivered the breaking new story of Princess Diana's fatal car accident in Paris. There were a few complaints from viewers, but nothing of significant note as the show aired on a Saturday night, and was one of the lowest rated programs on ABC at the time. The episode eventually aired uncut in syndication.
The pilot episode was filmed on the same set as Growing Pains (1985). In the beginning of the episode, Mark Curry meets Alan Thicke in the set and they make some jokes about the Growing Pains (1985).
In the first season, En Vogue performed the show's theme song with stars Holly Robinson Peete and Dawnn Lewis.
