More Hong Kong Classics Hit Blu Ray!

23 November 2009 7:32 AM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Oh, the BluRay revolution is going to get expensive with lots of films I love but never picked up on DVD suddenly becoming available all gussied up and purty.

On the Jackie Chan front, Police Story originally hit BluRay a couple months back but that original film is now about to be followed by Police Story 2 on November 27th and the double bill of Chan at his absolute peak is too tough to resist.

And Jackie's not alone in having his classics reissued.  Nope, they're doing Jet Li's Once Upon A Time In China series, too.  Again, part one was out a while ago and part two drops November 27th.

As a reminder, these releases are all English friendly and with Hong Kong being part of BluRay Region A, these are playable in any North American BluRay player.

Black List Screenplay Once Upon a Time in Hell Bought by Phoenix Pictures

4 November 2009 1:15 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Ever since Sergio Leone made his pair of 'Once Upon a Time..." movies (a masterful pair of films at that) other writers and directors have cribbed the title for their own work. Jet Li gained popularity with Once Upon a Time in China. Robert Rodriguez obviously nodded to Leone with Once Upon a Time in Mexico, and Quentin Tarantino did the same with the title card and early tagline for Inglourious Basterds. ("Once Upon a Time in Occupied France...") Now Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy will be able to add their script, Once Upon a Time in Hell, to the list. After being listed on the 2009 Black List of popular unproduced screenplays, their work has been bought by Phoenix Pictures. The big question is: how has a movie not already been made with this title? The story is based on the classic revenge story by Alexandre Dumas, The Count of »

Beginners guide to Hong Kong Action Cinema Part 1

30 October 2009 5:53 PM, PDT | AsianMoviePulse | See recent AsianMoviePulse news »

Hong Kong Action Cinema!!!!! When it first came about in the 1920's the directors were focusing more on the Wuxia style, emphasizing mysticism and swordplay and telling tales of herioc sword warriors. But this was politically suppressed in the 1930s and replaced by styles in which films shows more down-to-earth unarmed kung fu, often featuring the all time hero Wong Fei Hung (mainly played by Kwan Tak Hing). »

The Legend of Drunken Master - Blu-ray Review

30 September 2009 7:39 AM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

To git into the swang of thinks I decided to git drunk to rearview this one, hiccup. Well, not really, but Jackie Chan finds that his arts are more martial when he has a drink or ten so order up another round. The folks at Buena Vista might.ve have one too many as well since they did the Drunken Masters no favors on Blu-ray. Wong Fei Hung (Jackie Chan) is a practitioner of Zui Quan (style of the Drunken Fist). Meaning that the more alcohol he drinks the more ferocious his kung fu, that is unless he drinks too much. His father Kei Ying (Ti Lung) is a respected doctor and doesn.t appreciate his son.s style of fighting. »

[DVD Review] Triangle

24 September 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

The DVD cover for Triangle says “Three Masters. One Masterpiece.” Triangle does not in fact live up to the hype its cover hopes to generate, but I understand the desire to make a little-known (to Americans anyway) film’s cover eye-catching. This Hong Kong import did pique my interest with its distinction of bringing together three innovative and influential Hk directors: Tsui Hark (Zu Warriors, Once Upon a Time in China), Ringo Lam (City on Fire, which inspired Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs, the underrated twin Jackie Chan comedy Twin Dragons, and Chow Yun Fat vehicle Full Contact), Johnnie To (Ptu, Election, and Breaking News).

The primary cinematic appeal of Triangle is invested in the collaboration between these three “masters.” Each director takes the reins on one 30-minute section of this 90-minute film. The trio maintains the same editor and cinematography to ensure continuity but bring their own stylistic choices and cinematic flair to their third. »

Party Favors: Trumbo

23 September 2009 10:48 PM, PDT | | See recent news »

Seattle – Dalton Trumbo was one of the biggest names in screenwriting who for the longest time wasn’t allowed to show his name on the screen. He won two Oscars, but wasn’t allowed to step onto the stage.

At the peak of his career in 1947, he was brought before the House Un-American Activities Committee to testify about communists in Hollywood films. Like other screenwriters before the Huac, he refused to answer the questions. Their decision to not name names got them blacklisted in the industry and sent to prison. After nearly a year behind bars, Dalton secretly returned to screenwriting. He used fake names and front writers on various project. It wasn’t till 1960 when his name accompanied Exodus and Spartacus that the blacklist was broken.

Trumbo is a documentary about the writer that was originally a play written by his son Christopher Trumbo. The play had actors reading »

Blu-Ray Round Up: Jet Li, Jackie Chan Highlight ‘Ultimate Force of Four’

21 September 2009 8:56 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Attention martial arts fans, Buena Vista Home Video recently released a wave of martial arts films on Blu-Ray under the title “The Ultimate Force of Four” box set, including one of Jet Li’s best films, the spectacular “Hero,” from director Zhang Yimou. “Hero” is easily the highlight of the quartet of recent HD releases but “Iron Monkey,” “The Legend of Drunken Master,” and “Zatoichi” will all satisfy fans in 1080p (as long as they’re not purists about audio tracks).

Three of the four titles are merely HD imports of special features and films already available on standard DVD. The exception is “Hero,” which includes an all-new featurette and a digital copy, but is actually one of the most divisive Blu-Rays of the year. Miramax/Buena Vista has made the baffling choice to include a higher caliber quality of audio for the dubbed tracks on “Hero,” “Iron Monkey, »

Li Finished With Hollywood, for Now

25 August 2009 9:30 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Apparently, Jet Li has kicked enough butt stateside, and is going back to Hong Kong to try his hand at drama.

Li is due to begin shooting the non-kung fu movie, which will arrive in theatres next year. According to Zhang Hongyan, publicist for the Hong Kong-based Edko Film, the project has tentatively been titled "Ocean Paradise".

"It's a movie that's very different from his previous movies," Zhang told The Chengdu Shangbao, a Chinese newspaper, and confirmed Li would not fight in the film. More details about Ocean Paradise will be made available at an official news conference in Beijing on Wednesday.

Li’s recent three movies have been big-budget Hollywood productions: The Forbidden Kingdom, in which the martial artist/actor worked on-screen with Jackie Chan; The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, which featured state-of-the-art special effects; and the upcoming Sylvester Stallone-helmed The Expendables.

Chop Socky Horror

23 June 2009 10:05 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Body Count: Volume 11 - Because of the nature of my website and the fact that a bulk of the writing is dedicated to the horror genre, it is often assumed that Cinema Suicide is all about horror. And you have no idea how much that bugs me. The original mission was a website in celebration of genres and trashy stuff but it just so happens that most of the goofy stuff that produces news these days is in the horror genre. But did you know that I also love kung fu movies? Yeah! I totally do! I love The Shaw Brothers, Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, Jimmy Wang Yu, Donny Yen, Gordon Liu, etc. So I'm going to twist this week's Bodycount to suit my frustration with being pigeonholed as the resident horror guy and throw some Asian spice into the mix. This week, it's all about horror with a chop socky twist. »

4 June 2009 6:05 PM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Kung fu veteran actor Shek Kin (aka Shih Kien, Sek Kin) has passed away in Hong Kong due to kidney failure. He was 96.

Throughout the fifty plus years within the showbiz, Shek has appeared in literally hundreds of films and was famous among the kung fu world for portraying a villain in many wuxia films, most notably as the arch nemesis in the original black and white Wong Fei Hung film series that starred Kwan Tak Hing.  For the martial arts film enthusiast and the international audience, he will always be fondly remembered in Enter the Dragon as Mr. Han, the evil drug lord and formidable adversary to Bruce Lee

Sammo Hung and Donnie Yen will face off once again… in Ip Man 2!

3 April 2009 6:53 PM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Okay. Time for some real news from me today and this news warms my heart oh so much.

Though he was behind the scenes in the first Ip Man film Hk martial arts acting legend Sammo Hung will be stepping in front of the camera for the sequel. Oh hell yes. The sequel takes place in 1949 after Yip Man arrives in Hong Kong and begins to teach Wing Chun. Sammo Hung plays a Hung Gar master. Hung Gar is a southern Chinese martial art whose most famous practitioner was Chinese folk hero Wong Fei Hung. Another famous practitioner of this martial art is another Hk martial arts film legend Lau Kar-leung [Drunken Master 2, The Spiritual Boxer, Eight Diagram Pole Fighter]. Ooh. I don’t know who to root for.

Above all, martial arts choreographer Sammo Hung… will be playing a Hung Gar master in the sequel, and will again be going toe to toe - or rather, finger to »
