Beverly Hills, California — In early 2008, then-little-known actors including Robert Pattinson, Ashley Greene and Taylor Lautner traveled to Portland to shoot a small vampire film that they hoped would get a theatrical release. Barely two years later, "Twilight" is one of the biggest franchises in Hollywood, with two Vancouver-filmed sequels rolling into theaters. Now, Pattinson is revealing plans to return to the city where it all began — and recommending the Portland-based Oscar nominee he wants to direct "Breaking Dawn."
"I probably shouldn't say this," Rob revealed to MTV News over the weekend, acknowledging that the wheels are slowly creeping into motion on "Breaking Dawn" getting made. "But I've heard that we're going to shoot it in Portland.

Gus Van Sant and American Psycho Author Take On Story of Artists' Double Suicide

Director Gus Van Sant is well-known for making movies focused on outsiders struggling for a sense of identity (Milk, Paranoid Park, My Own Private Idaho). Author Bret Easton Ellis is perhaps most famous for his novel about an outsider who also happens to be an outright sociopath (American Psycho). Now, Variety writes that the two will collaborate on the story of Theresa Duncan and Jeremy Blake, a couple who committed suicide two years ago.
Blake and Duncan were stars of the multimedia art world — he was a well-renowned digital artist, painter, and designer, while she was a filmmaker, video game designer, and critic — but shortly before their deaths, their behavior grew erratic. At one point, the couple became paranoid that they were under attack by Scientologists. Blake returned home on July 10, 2007 to find Duncan already deceased from ingesting a combination of medicines and alcohol. One week later, he drowned himself

Columbus Day Tales Of Discovery, Real And Imagined

Today is Columbus Day, a federal holiday when people are meant to take some time to reflect on the 1492 arrival of Christopher Columbus in the New World, the continents now known as North and South America. Most people just use the free day to brunch, shop and chill, but it's really one of those half holidays where only certain members of the gainfully employed community actually have the time off.
Still, the message of exploration, discovery, is always worth reflecting on. There are few untouched regions left on this planet, so discovery has become more of a scientific pursuit than a geographical one. The joy of being the first to lay eyes on a new land somehow remains relatable however; cinema especially has never shied away from themes of exploration and discovery, even in its earliest days. After the jump you'll see some examples of our favorite discovery flicks.

The 50 Best Gay Movies (2009)

Why aren’t there more good gay movies? We hear this complaint at
AfterElton.com a lot, and we’ve even made it a few times ourselves (although we
think the results of this poll prove that there are more good movies than many
of us think!).
There are surely many reasons why more “mainstream” movies don’t include gay
or bisexual themes, but no doubt one of them is heterosexual discomfort – not
just discomfort on the part of audiences and network executives, but also
discomfort on the part of critics and others to champion these films.
This is where our poll of AfterElton.com readers on the 50 Greatest
Gay Movies comes in. We can think of no better way to encourage the creation of
more good gay movies than to praise and support the existence of past good gay
movies!
How does this list compare to our previous poll?

-- Ian McKellen told attendees at an all-night "Lord of the Rings" screening that an actor has been selected to play Bilbo in "The Hobbit." There are no further details than that, though McKellen also mentioned that he'll be getting the script "within the next week." This falls very deeply into the rumor territory for now, though I have little doubt that a script exists or that there's a Bilbo short list. Especially since "Hobbit" director Guillermo del Toro told us as much in an interview. (TheOneRing.net)
-- The word is the "Fight Club" and "Zodiac" director David Fincher is all set to direct the Aaron Sorkin-penned "The Social Network," also known as "the Facebook movie" in some circles. As you might expect, the story follows the rise of the beast that we call Facebook and its founder, Mark Zuckerberg. Sorkin and Fincher make for odd bedfellows; I'll definitely see this one.

Iconic Gay Movie Roles

It’s not exactly news that as a mass
medium, cinema has the power to dramatically influence and change public
attitudes toward minority groups, often making them accessible and relatable to
the mainstream.
Unfortunately, that power works the
opposite way as well and the movie industry, under a strict legion of
‘so-called’ decency laws commonly referred to as the Hays Code enacted in the
1930s, tended to frown upon positive representations of the gay community up
until the 1960s. Gays were still present on screen, but more often than not,
they were limited to stereotypes such as the drag queen/transvestite, the
degenerate, the depraved killer and so forth.
As The
Celluloid Closet (1995) brilliantly revealed, many gay and bisexual men had
their motivations buried in subtext – virile characters like Ben Hur, for instance, were blatantly bisexual, but had to be
inconspicuous about their love for the boys.
As the years rolled on,

Robert Pattinson's super sexy pictures have been unveiled. In one of the photos, the "Twilight" hunk was photographed in wet t-shirt look. In another image, the British actor smiled and donned a jeans vest that showed his abs.
"They threw a bucket of water on him!" a source which was on set told Us magazine about Robert's wet look picture. "He was willing to do anything. Didn't complain at all." The photos were originally taken for Rolling Stone magazine, but since the print media never published them, Us Weekly features the photos in its latest issue, which hits the newsstands on July 8.
Robert's sexy pictures were taken in New York City in an around five-hour photo shoot. The shots were taken by photographer Theo Wenner and inspired by James Dean and a 1991 River Phoenix film "My Own Private Idaho".

What can be said, post-Oscar-fuggup, about this sick-hearted anti-American Dream that hasn't already been said, and kudoed: Darren Aronofsky's channeling of the Dardennes' immediacy, Mickey Rourke's Herculean self-deprecation, both of which currents combining to prove the script's essential conventionality to be irrelevant, just at a moment in American film in which we had all good reason to think the Industry was completely bankrupt of balls, curiosity, respect and a sense of America itself. (Let's consider in this broad formulation that 2007 was a modern aberration, unleashing a wave of nation-autopsying megaworks -- "There Will Be Blood," "The Assassination of Jesse James," "No Country for Old Men," "Zodiac," etc. -- the likes of which have not been seen since at least 1991; as in, "My Own Private Idaho," "The Rapture," "Slacker," "Tribulation 99," "Naked Lunch," et al.)
However you cube it, "The Wrestler" is a gift, for the most part because Rourke

The Criterion Collection's website posts the top 10 favorite Criterion movies of various artists each month, and this month's entry is from James Franco, whose taste in movies is as good as his stoner act. Instead of a Top 10, Mr. Franco provided them with 15 movies grouped by their 9 directors. Wha--? Forget it.
Not surprisingly, among the 15 is Gus Van Sant's My Own Private Idaho, which he had credited many times before as the movie that made him fall in love with films and inspired him to go into acting. Pictured above is a photo taken by Gus Van Sant last year in Oregon of Franco reenacting a scene from the film.
Gus is the best. Idaho was one of the first movies with which I fell in love. I would watch it repeatedly when I was a teenager. River Phoenix gives the performance of a lifetime, original and inspiring. As a young actor,

Josh Brolin was so desperate to star in a Gus Van Sant movie he travelled to the moviemaker's hometown hoping he'd be "discovered".
The actor, who features in Van Sant's Milk biopic, admits to taking a trip to Portland, Oregon when Van Sant was making cult film My Own Private Idaho - just so he could be near his hero.
He tells Eonline. com, "What I was going to do was find Gus Van Sant and be discovered by him. Gus would see me on the street and go, 'Oh my God. That's the guy. He's perfect. Look at him'."
