Michel Hafner (18 November 2001):
Martin Scorsese's thriller Cape Fear (1991) is now available on DVD on this collector's edition mastered from a new transfer. Quality?
The film master used is clean and steady.
Contrast and color rendition are good. Sharpness is quite nice as well, but suffers somewhat from noise reduction.
The noise and grain level is ok but grain is visible most of the time despite the filtering.
Compression with a high bit rate is efficient.
The weakest aspect of the DVD are the video artifacts. There is some moiré at times, edges are enhanced and noise reduction messes slightly with the textures. None of this is distracting and it's usually minor.
The supplements are on a second disc where they belong. Quality of the deleted scenes is considerably worse than the feature.
This is a quite good looking disc from Universal but top quality remains elusive throughout. Images often look somewhat noisy/fuzzy/processed and the film-look is not always there. Nonetheless this DVD looks nice and it takes high quality displays to reveal the problem areas. Recommended.
