King Hands Out Christmas Cash To Troops

14 December 2009 1:56 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Horror author Stephen King has given U.S. troops a Christmas boost by handing over $13,000 (GBP8,125) to help soldiers get home for the holidays.

The Misery writer will help 150 service families spend Christmas Day together with his generous cash handout.

The money will benefit the members of the main Army National Reserve in Indiana, who are in training for deployment in Afghanistan in January. »

Blu-ray Review: Misery

8 December 2009 6:15 AM, PST | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

While certain studios and certain features have excelled on the high-definition format, many companies have updated their back catalogs to Blu-ray only to give them a half-hearted, lazy effort, leaving special features in standard definition, if bringing them over at all, with sub-par updates of the feature itself. When studios are asking that film fanatics pay an average of $10 more for the format, it seems almost a slap in the face not to upgrade the entire package to make it worthwhile. The epitome of that half-assed effort to date may be Misery, which doesn’t even pretend to be a full HD release, instead leaving the commentary and extras to a DVD included with the Blu-ray feature. It is hard to discredit the feature itself. Rob Reiner’s adaptation of Stephen King’s inward-looking thriller Misery helped cement Kathy Bates as an unforgettable and truly Oscar-worthy actress. It also does »

Syfy's Alice Review: A Visually Whimsical Reimagining

4 December 2009 8:19 AM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

If I describe SyFy's new four hour miniseries 'Alice' as a modern-day reimagining of Lewis Carroll's classic stories I am probably doing it a disservice. Yet I cannot think of a more appropriate way to describe it.

This new miniseries, written and directed by Nick Willing (Tin Man), takes almost all of the elements from 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking-Glass' but alters their context to create something new. Wonderland, we are told, has changed considerably since the events of those novels unfolded, evolving into a city of crumbling, twisting towers and buildings constructed out of cards and chess pieces.

Twenty-something karate instructor, Alice Hamilton (Caterina Scorsone) finds herself in this bizarre, twisted world when she gives chase to a man involved in the kidnap of her boyfriend, Jack Chase (Philip Winchester, Crusoe). Trying to find him and make her way back to her own world, she is »

Scott Sigler - Inside Stephen King's Terrifying (and Sometimes Terrible) Movie Adaptations

2 December 2009 9:00 PM, PST | amctv.com - Horror Hacker: Scott Sigler | See recent amctv.com - Horror Hacker: Scott Sigler news »

I know, I know: We've all asked before (and will probably ask again) why Hollywood always seem to butcher Stephen King's stories. That complaint seems to come up all the time, but it's no longer entirely accurate. In fact, it's hard to remember where this perception came from: After all, King is the storyteller behind the movies The Shawshank Redemption, Misery, The Green Mile, The Shining and many others. Books: Review:Stephen King: Under The Dome

24 November 2009 10:00 PM, PST | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Stephen King’s newest novel is, at 1,066 pages, his longest in more than a decade—not as big as monsters like It and The Stand, but with a cast of hundreds and an epic scale. What’s really impressive is that for all its brain-bashing size, Under The Dome goes by in a flash. In Misery, King’s novel about the power of fiction, the author hero talks about the “gotta,” the mystical compulsion to find out what happens next. After years of clunky exposition and muddled, intermittently moving character studies, Dome is a rush of blackly comic »

10 closest Oscar races in the past 20 years

23 November 2009 1:12 PM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

One of the shrewdest Oscarologists on the planet is Tariq Khan of Fox News, who often generously shares his views of current and past derbies with Gold Derby readers. Here he takes a nostalgic look  at the past two decades, offering his take on the most competitive derbies. Words below are Tariq's. Thanks, m'friend!

We’ve often discussed those Oscar races that seem just too close to call . . . where it’s clear (or at least seems clear) that the eventual winner will nab the Oscar with only a few more votes than his or her nearest competitor. While we can never really know for sure (unless we get one of those top jobs at the accounting firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers,) we do have some idea of what may have been the closest races in Oscar history. Allow me to present what I believe were the 10 closest acting races over the course of the past 20 years. »

The Blind Side Giveaway

11 November 2009 5:17 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Opening on November 20th is director John Lee Hancock’s The Blind Side, which stars Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw and Kathy Bates. I’ll admit when I sat down to watch The Blind Side, I really didn’t expect much.  I thought it would be a Lifetime movie of the week except on the big screen.  But even though I walked in ready to dismiss the film, I’m forced to say The Blind Side was a lot better than I expected and I enjoyed the way it mixed a few different genres together.  What you need to know is, The Blind Side is both a football movie and a family values film.  It’s also a bit of a comedy.  When films try and mix genres like this, you almost always end in disaster.  So I have to give credit to director John Lee Hancock for crafting a film »

50 Influential Scream Queens: Part 2

27 October 2009 10:57 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Before I launch into the conclusion of my 50 Influential Scream Queens (read part 1 here), please let me remind you that this list is based upon my personal taste, and my personal taste alone. I didn't poll 100 Fango readers, the Fango staff or any other form of 'industry professionals'. It's all opinion, so if you feel I've wronged a certain actress by excluding them from the list, don't leap to brand the entire Fango crew 'vile'.  I probably just don't personally find their work to be that influential. Either that or I'm just ignorant to their accomplishments!

25. Mia Farrow: Mia's genre work may be a bit limited, but that doesn't change the fact that Rosemary's Baby will forever be regarded as one of the creepiest films in history. Farrow's portrayal of Rosemary Woodhouse is harrowing to say the least, and will always remain (in my mind) one of the best performances the genre has seen. »

The Reel Reviewer: Misery (Reiner, 1990) Blu-ray Review

26 October 2009 7:13 AM, PDT | HorrorYearbook | See recent HorrorYearbook news »

A movie that makes you think twice about becoming a celebrity; Misery delves into the mind and the world of an obsessively violent stalker. With interesting characters, a solid story, and a situation that makes you uncomfortable to the point that it hurts, one can say that movie adaptation of the Stephen King novel does have the same take away dread feeling as it's novel counterpart. »

The Weather Channel is about to become The Weather Movie Channel

21 October 2009 6:29 AM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Looks like TV Land isn't the only cable channel going away from their original programming model and getting into movies.

The Weather Channel has announced that it is adding movies to its schedule. The movies would have a scroll at the bottom that would keep viewers informed of the weather and other weather-related news and information, and each movie will be hosted by a meteorologist. The movies they've chosen so far all have a weather or a nature theme to them, including The Perfect Storm, March of the Penguins, Deep Blue Sea, and Misery. I'm guessing they picked Misery not for the crazy-woman-holds-a-writer-hostage angle but for the fact that the story takes places during a snowstorm.

The Weather Channel Decides to Show Movies Now That No One Watches The Weather Channel

20 October 2009 9:40 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

A channel entirely devoted to weather was a fantastic idea until we got phones that would tell us the weather and do so without waiting ten minutes to see what the weather was like in a major city in our area. So what’s a network entirely devoted to weather to do?  What if they turned their efforts to covering hard news not just of natural disasters (as much fun as it is to toss a reporter into a hurricane) but of their aftermath?  What if they did an investigative report on how Fema has attempted (if at all) to change in response to Hurricane Katrina?  What about a special on how a disaster like a tsunami leaves damage beyond the loss of life and property but affects drinking water and dispersed children and other factors we don’t traditionally think of?

Or they could just show movies about weather. »

Weather Channel Will Show Movies Which Have Nothing To Do With Weather

20 October 2009 6:03 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Slashfilm reported something very interesting... they received a press release from the Weather Channel saying they'll be showing movies. You must be thinking, hey that's pretty awesome! I forgot that channel existed. But hold your excitement. The first movie they'll be showcasing is The Perfect Storm. Okay, it's a movie about a huge ass storm. That's highly relevant. There's even going to be weather type commentary from meteorologist Jen Carfagno. But the next week, things get shaky... when they show March of the Penguins... but still, they could tie weather into that somehow right? Then it just gets stupid when they show Misery. Yes, the one with Kathy Bates. On the weather channel. I'll just let that sink in. The Next week, we basically hammer the nails in, with Deep Blue Sea. Look weather channel, I know personally, I never tune in. But I don't think showing Katy Bates busting »

Children of the Corn (2009)

7 October 2009 8:22 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Children of The Corn Directed by Donald P. Borchers In what's being marketed as a "rebirth," Children of the Corn revisits the 80's classic that spawned 6 sequels and countless amounts of children to fear those long weekends in the country.  There's a trend happening again in the Horror genre. A trend that makes a strong case that children are complete creeps.  Not only are they capable of being annoying little brats but it seems that in every town, city, county or home, there's at least one twisted little monster, who in between playing with Trouble the pop-omatic bubble game dreams of popping your skull open and feasting upon the meat of your brain. Word of advice: Don't have kids and don't trust kids, they'll just try to kill you.  Children of the Corn, if anything, reaffirms these wise words as well as gives us the much needed visceral satisfaction of brutal violence towards kiddies, »
