Kaali Ganga review :

'80s was the peak time for lady dacoit dramas and every heroine had her own film to boost. Hema Malini did Ramkali (1985), Zeenat Aman had Daku Hasina (1987), Jaya Pradha played the lead in Zakhmee Zameen (1990). The ever gorgeous Dimple was not to be left behind and she signed on Kaali Ganga - a non horror movie produced by Ramsays which got delayed and limped to a theatrical release in mid '90s only to flop miserably.

The basic theme of all these movies remain same - The heroine is a young and innocent gaon ki gori whose parents are indebted to the evil Thakur who kills them off and rapes the heroine or her younger sister. Her brother is either murdered or incapacitated while the rape is taking place in front of him. Next, the heroine swears vengeance, joins a dacoit gang and comes back to kill the Thakur and his clan. The hero is invariably a police officer having a "soft corner" for the lady bandit.

Kaali Ganga was the same old wine in an equally old bottle and the classy elegant Dimple looked totally misfit as the avenging dacoit. Surprisingly, she had some intimate scenes with Suresh Oberoi who played her lover turned cop. Still, it couldn't save the film from becoming a box office disaster.

Talking about the lady dacoit genre, Shekhar Kapur's Bandit Queen (1994) is the only hard hitting and realistic portrayal ever. But then, that film is not everyone's cup of tea!!
