Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, that you instead use this feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes.

Sex & Nudity

Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of epic violence, some language, brief sexuality and nudity.

Costner is seen naked from behind before and after bathing in a pond. A married couple appears to be having sex underneath a blanket in a tee-pee where other people are sleeping around them (no body parts are explicitly shown). Costner watches them for a moment, surprised, before they notice him looking and he turns away. Costner's character has sex with a woman who is not his wife (no body parts are explicitly shown).

Violence & Gore

Characters are seen wounded - both in war scenes and otherwise; a lot of blood is shown. A man shoots himself in the head and his blood is splattered on a window. Native Americans attack several people with arrows and a lot of blood is shown. Skinned buffalo carcasses are shown strewn about a field. Buffalo are shown being hunted with spears, arrows, and a gun. Several people are shot and killed in a battle between two Native American tribes. A horse is shot to death. A man is scalped and shot with arrows.

Profanity

S.O.B. is said a couple times.

Native Americans and Costner smoke from a long pipe. It is not clear what substance is being smoked, but it is probably some form of tobacco, as there appears to be no intoxicating effect.

Native Americans attack white people several times; in one scene, this is done in front of children. A man is scalped.
