This was about a somewhat aimless English woman who had bad luck with men and jobs who lucked into being an assistant to an American actress diva with an ego problem. In the first episode Freddie loses her job and her boyfriend, and goes on an interview to be a personal assistant as a lark. The other applicant for the job is nervous and Freddie plays on that to send the women running for the door. Freddie is able to keep the job because she stands up to Max's insults and gives them right back to her. Sharp eyed audiences will recognize the young assistant as having played one of Hugh Grant's friends in the movie Four Weddings and A Funeral.

I just went to a talk on Ava Gardner and asked if Maxine Chandler was based on her. They said they didn't know. I once met Charlotte Coleman but that's another matter. Ava did live in London for many years so... I don't remember the series very well-except for Maxine's immortal line "I know what the real world is. That's why I do my best to avoid it!" I remember writing that, if anyone wanted to revive "All About Eve" or "Applause", Anne Bancroft would be an ideal Margo Channing.
