In the 1980s and early 1990s, cartoons often featured positive moral lessons in a PSA style, like the "knowing is half the battle" segments of "G.I. Joe" or the "Sailor Says" endings of "Sailor Moon." Many of these additions were due to the passing of the "Children's Television Act" in 1991, legalizing what so many shows had already been doing -- serving the "educational and informational" needs of children. A lot of times, these PSA announcements had something to do with the episode that just played, but sometimes they, like "Sonic Sez" on "The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog," had absolutely nothing to do with the cartoon ... like that time Sonic gave a PSA on sexual harassment. (I'm dead serious.)

The historic city of New Orleans also happens to be one of the most haunted and rich in supernatural folklore. That makes it the perfect setting for “Fright Krewe,” an animated gateway horror series from creators/executive producers Eli Roth and James Frey. The 10-episode inaugural season charms for its adolescent spin on Voodoo, folklore, and a demonic ancient prophecy that’s never quite as scary as high school.
Soleil (Sydney Mikayla) loves New Orleans for its open embrace of all things spooky. That love also means she’s a bit of an outsider at school. Soleil is comfortable as a loner, but that changes when an ancient prophecy gets triggered by the awakening of a dormant demon. Soleil, along with fellow peers Maybe (Tim Johnson Jr.), Missy (Grace Lu), Stanley (Chester Rushing), and Pat (Terrence Little Gardenhigh), is tasked by Loa spirits with the job of saving the city.

HBO Max and Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav can't seem to keep their names out of the headlines recently, tied exclusively to baffling business decisions like canning the highly-anticipated release of "Batgirl" or absolutely obliterating the streaming platform's animated offerings. Zaslav made it known during the Q2 earnings call that he had hoped to cut 3 billion from HBO Max's operating budget before the inevitable streaming merger with discovery+, which apparently meant annihilating the relationships HBO Max had with Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network.
Learning that your life's work is being wiped out with complete disregard for the artistry or the lives of those that crafted it is difficult enough, but as "Infinity Train" creator Owen Dennis shared, Zaslav and the Discovery team couldn't even have the common courtesy to inform the creators of their decision to throw away their years of work like expired takeout. We lost a great one this weekend with Ed Asner. The lovably gruff actor died at 91. Asner was a prolific actor, not only having well over 400 credits to his name, but also still performing roles to the end. Sure, every obituary is going to talk up how well known he was for The Mary Tyler Moore Show and all that, but for many of us, he was a huge part of our childhoods.
Ed Asner did plenty of voice work. More than I can talk about here, but his deep, growly, and at times friendly voice lent itself well to a lot of cartoon characters. Not just the old man from Up, but lots of villains and supporting characters in superhero shows. He was also in FoodFight, but we don’t need to talk about FoodFight.

Ed Asner’s long career in show business embraced acting, voiceovers, and social activism on a large scale. Best remembered for his iconic role as the newsroom leader Lou Grant, Asner is remembered here in our photo gallery.
Asner’s long list of credits also include the movies Elf, one of several movies in which he played Santa Claus, and Pixar’s Oscar-winning Up, in which he voiced the lead, Carl Fredricksen.
He most recently acted on several Emmy-nominated comedy series, Cobra Kai, playing Johnny Lawrence’s stepfather Sid Winberg, Grace And Frankie and on Dead To Me.
A string of guest-starring roles led to his casting as Lou Grant in the acclaimed 1970 half-hour comedy series The Mary Tyler Moore Show. After the series ended In 1977, Asner’s character was given his own spinoff series, hourlong drama Lou Grant (1977–82). Additionally, Asner made appearances as Lou Grant on two other shows,...

Captain Planet is more of a disheveled, depressed drunk than “our hero” at this point. And you can totally forget about that taking “pollution down to zero” part of the old theme song.
On Monday’s “Late Show,” Stephen Colbert’s cold open centered on the recent U.N. climate crisis report, which found that Earth is getting even hotter than we thought, even faster than we thought. And yes, much of the problem is a man-made one.
You can imagine how this situation, classified a “Code Red” by the United Nations secretary general, is going over with the leader of the Planeteers.
To summon their hero, Earth, Fire, Wind, Water and Heart once again combined, this time revealing a slovenly Captain Planet sitting askew in a cloud recliner clutching a beer.
“What time is it?” the Colbert-voiced green-haired hero asked.
It was probably like noon.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “A Rickconvenient Mort,” the third episode of Season 5 of “Rick and Morty.”
Despite a surefire premise to work with, “A Rickconvenient Mort” is the weakest episode of “Rick and Morty” Season 5 so far. Considering just how strong the first two episodes of the season have been, that’s not even necessarily a bad thing, but it does make for a relatively unfavorable comparison. While there are arguments that can be made about “Mort Dinner Rick Andre” and “Mortiplicity” possibly being all-time great “Rick and Morty” episodes, “A Rickconvenient Mort” doesn’t quite clear that same bar. The ingredients are there, from the premise (a contemporary riff on “Captain Planet and the Planeteers”) to the stellar guest voice cast and even to an emotional Morty storyline, but “A Rickconvenient Mort” doesn’t quite live up to its potential.

Rick and Morty Season 5 Episode 3
It seems like Rob Schrab is nostalgic for the era of kids’ cartoons from my childhood. I say my childhood, because Schrab—longtime collaborator and friend of Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon—is over a decade older than me, but he loves to parody cartoons from when I was growing up. He had a major role doing a Cobra Commander impression in the animated episode of Harmon’s sitcom Community, “G.I. Jeff” (which he also directed) and now he’s written this episode, “A Rickconvenient Mort,” half of which is a parody of the nineties’ environmentalist cartoon, Captain Planet and the Planeteers.
I really didn’t enjoy “G.I. Jeff.” It was a bizarre, confused episode with humor that didn’t work unless you had a fondness for the eighties (and/or early nineties)’ cartoon series,...

Excellent questions, friends! We will do our absolute best to explain them in clear, concise terms to you right now.
Here are simple answers to complicated questions: NFTs are ecologically devastating vaporware created to part very dumb, very wealthy collectors from their money, made by stoned libertarian math nerds trying to prove a point they think is profound but is actually just very banal. Veve is no different than any other secondary huckster that springs up around a particularly successful snake oil economy.
As for why DC is getting in bed with them, it’s hard to know if the company is trying to just be cutting edge or if it’s because AT&T took on a shitload of debt buying Warner,...

Orson Welles is remembered for many things. His narration of War of the Worlds on the radio is legendary. He gave the world the groundbreaking film Citizen Kane. He schemed to the tunes of zither in the Third Man. He died voicing the planet-eating robot Unicron in Transformers: The Movie. One of the more obscure episodes in his life was when he was hired to record voiceover ads for Findus and their frozen food products.
Yes, it’s one of those things that’s just too weird to exist.
Once upon a time, Welles was tasked with recording lines for a peas commercial and things started to go off the rails. He and the directors didn’t see eye-to-eye, he didn’t appreciate any notes about his delivery, and eventually, he stormed out of the session, claiming that no money was worth this. Don Lusk, an animator and director who worked on Disney classics including Fantasia, Bambi and Pinocchio before moving to Hanna-Barbera in the 1960s, died Sunday. He was 105. His longtime friend Navah-Paskowitz Asner, announced the news on social media.
Born on October 28, 1913, in Los Angeles, Lusk was just 20 when he joined the Walt Disney Company just after the Great Depression, as its animation studio was riding high on Mickey Mouse shorts. He would work on those cartoons for his first several years there before contributing to Disney’s second and third toon features, 1940’s Pinocchio and Fantasia. For the latter, Lusk worked on the classic “Nutcracker Suite” and “Pastoral Symphony” segments.
He went on to draw for cartoons and such classic Disney features as Song of the South, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan and Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty and 101 Dalmatians, among others.

From 1990 to 1992, Tuner Program Services and Dic Entertainment presented “Captain Planet and the Planeteers,” an animated TV show that followed five teenagers empowered with the classical elements and the superhero Captain Planet to protect the world from environmental danger. Since then, “Captain Planet” has produced a sequel TV series that ran from 1993 to 1996, a comic book series, video games, and of course, the Captain Planet Foundation, an organization that inspires and teaches youth about the environmental challenges facing the world today. But now it will soon become a feature film, produced by Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way Productions and Paramount Pictures.

Leonardo DiCaprio has quietly become something of an activist. With each passing year, the actor seems to inch closer to the kind of celebrity activist that folks like Sean Penn, George Clooney, and Angelina Jolie all are. He's also a smart businessman. DiCaprio sees that superheroes are all anyone is interested in these days, and so it looks like he's ready to merge his worlds a bit by adapting a beloved superhero for the big screen that actually has something to say about the world at large: Captain Planet.
The Hollywood Reporter has just revealed that DiCaprio's Appian Way and Paramount Pictures are teaming up to bring an adaptation of Captain Planet And The Planeteers to a theater near you.
That's not all. They're already working hard to find writers for the project, as Paramount is courting Jono Matt and Glen Powell to pen the script.

By your powers combined, or at least the powers of some folks in Hollywood, a Captain Planet movie is in development.
This just in: Paramount is developing a Captain Planet movie. Remember Captain Planet? Captain Planet And The Planeteers was a somewhat preachy cartoon with an environmental message that ran from 1993-1996. Depending on how old you were at the time, you either have fond memories of it (and its brightly designed, but strangely mulleted title character) or found it insufferable (primarily because of his supporting cast of teenage 'planeteers'), but it's unlikely you've forgotten it.
Captain Planet would be summoned "by your powers combined" when the Planeteers would work together with their magic rings to fight villains with names like 'Hoggish Greedly.'
The nostalgia factor aside, there's some interesting talent involved in bringing the Captain Planet movie to life. For starters, Paramount is the studio...

Time for a bit of early ’90s nostalgia here, as THR is reporting that Paramount Pictures and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way production company have partnered up to bring environmental superhero Captain Planet to the big screen.

The series was hosted by James Coburn, who introduced each story segment as a photographer in his darkroom, developing photographs and tales. The innovative aspect of this particular anthology series was that the story segments had free range to be as long or as short as the story needed to be, as long as the segments fit within the hour duration. Most episodes contained two stories, but at times there were three.

As Edna Krabappel on The Simpsons, Marcia Wallace may be the only 4th-grade teacher to have the same student for 24 years. Before that, she was beloved as Carol Kester, the lovelorn, wisecracking secretary on The Bob Newhart Show.
Wallace, who was a breast cancer survivor for 28 years, has died at age 70, according to the showrunner of The Simpsons. “I was tremendously saddened to learn this morning of the passing of the brilliant and gracious Marcia Wallace,” producer Al Jean said in a statement to EW. “She was beloved by all at The Simpsons and we intend to retire her irreplaceable character.

Fracking heck, Captain Planet And The Planeteers are back. Telly's most dedicated band of environmental-aware heroes are getting the big-screen treatment, with Sony working on a movie version of the early '90s TV show. It's been in the works for three years now and finally seems to be taking to the skies. The show's premise, originally commissioned by Ted Turner as a kind of Last Airbender-meets-An Inconvenient Truth for tweens, has Earth spirit Gaia bestowing magical rings on five teenagers. Each ring represents a different life force: African Kwame gets earth; Wheeler, from North America, has fire; Linka, a Russian, controls wind; Asian Gi has water; and South American Ma-Ti gets heart. They'll be using these powers against a range of pun-heavy villains like Dr. Blight, Verminous Skumm, Duke Nukem, Looten Plunder and Rapen Pillage - Ok, not the last one - and occasionally calling upon titular superhero...

Hollywood loves to reduce, reuse, and recycle when it comes to film ideas, and this time it’s especially appropriate: Apparently the early ’90s cartoon Captain Planet and the Planeteers, about an environmentally conscious kid superhero squad (I always thought of them as the Vegetarian Burger King Kids Club), is up for a silver screen reboot! This is thrilling, as the show tackled some tough issues — including AIDS, in an episode featuring characters voiced by Elizabeth Taylor and a young Neil Patrick Harris – and there are plenty of opportunities for gay actors to nab big, fun roles here.
Let’s cast Captain Planet and the Planeteers with at least a few out gay actors. I’ve got three on this tally. The power… is ours!

“Captain Planet and the Planeteers” was one of my favorite cartoons growing up in the early 1990s. While it also gave me cool interpersonal “drama” such as Wheeler and Linka’s on-again, off-again relationship and the surprise of realizing Kwame was voiced by LeVar Burton, it also taught me about recycling and keeping the planet clean. So, imagine my surprise when I found out The Hollywood Reporter has stated that a “Captain Planet” film is on the works! Fondly-remembered and rarely-rewatched early-’90s cheesefest Captain Planet and the Planeteers will be adapted into a hilariously expensive franchise-baiting blockbuster film, if Hollywood has its way. EW has confirmed the news, initially reported by the Hollywood Reporter, that Sony is working on a film version of the cartoon, which starred five kids with magic elemental powers, a monkey, and a superhero whose only weakness was garbage. Mark Gordon, Don Murphy, and Susan Montford are slated as producers on the film — Montford and Murphy previously had a deal to turn Planet into a Cartoon Network movie, before Cartoon Network adopted a...

That’s it. Hollywood has officially re-optioned my entire childhood. From Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to Goosebumps books to Choose Your Own Adventure, I thought that there wasn’t a book series, TV show or beloved film that they had yet to reboot, repackage or re-configure. I was wrong. Sony Pictures is now in negotiations to pick up the rights to the cartoon series Captain Planet And The Planeteers. Oh. My. God.
For you young ‘uns born, rather than raised, in the 90s, Captain Planet And The Planeteers was an environmentally conscious cartoon show about a group of young people from across the world battling against eco-villains with the help of Captain Planet, Earth’s Greatest Hero. Multi-racial and multi-ethnic, the Planeteers gathered the powers of earth, wind, fire, water and – ahem – heart to summon Captain Planet and fight pollution and environmental breakdown. It was kind of the best show ever.

One for fans of ‘90s nostalgia now, as Heat Vision is reporting that Sony is set to press forward with an adaptation of popular cartoon series Captain Planet And The Planeteers. For anyone not familiar with the show, Captain Planet was the green-haired, environmentally-minded superhero charged with “taking pollution down to zero”. Cap is traditionally accompanied by his five buddies, the Planeteers, all of whom possess a magic ring, the powers of which combine to give our hero his strength. The studio is apparently in final...

Sony Pictures has entered final negotiations for the film rights to Captain Planet and the Planeteers.
The studio intends to bring the fondly remembered '90s cartoon - with its strong environmental message - to the big screen, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The original show featured five young characters from across the globe who are empowered with magical rings by the Earth mother Gaia to protect the world.
In times of need, they could summon Captain Planet, a blue-skinned superhero.
The cast of villains and supporting characters attracted some high-profile voice actors including Sting, Tim Curry, Jeff Goldblum, Meg Ryan, Martin Sheen, Elizabeth Taylor, Mark Hamill, Dionne Warwick and Kate Mulgrew.
Whoopi Goldberg voiced Gaia before being replaced by Margot Kidder.
A movie adaptation was attempted in the 1990s, but never progressed past the script stage.
Captain Planet and the Planeteers will be produced by Mark Gordon, Don Murphy and Susan Montford.

With Sony expected to score another half a billion dollar worldwide box office take this summer with The Smurfs 2, the studio has been hunting around the children's television schedules of the past few decades to see what else it csn found. And it looks like it's found Captain Planet And The Planeteers.
It's thus being reported that the studio is negotiating for a big screen take on Captain Planet. Sony Pictures is negotiating to acquire the rights to the 1990s TV series "Captain Planet and the Planeteers" in order to turn the property into a live-action film to be produced by Mark Gordon (2012), Don Murphy (Transformers) and Susan Montford (Real Steel). In an effort to inform younger viewers about serious environmental issues, Turner Broadcasting partnered with Dic Enterprises in 1990 to create the world's first animated environmental series, "Captain Planet and the Planeteers." The series was about a group of young people (The Planeteers) who combine their special powers to summon Captain Planet, an environmental superhero, to battle the world's worst eco-villains. While a writer, director or any cast members have yet to be hired, I'm sure many are hoping that Don Cheadle will be considered for the main role. Don Cheadle is Captain Planet:...

Sometimes we play news straight around here, maybe throw a little shade or enthusiasm into the mix. But some days you've just gotta be like There Is Going To Be A Captain Planet And The Planeteers Movie! (Well, probably. Sony Pictures is negotiating through the final stages to make everyone's dream a reality.) Sweep aside the nostalgia for a second and just consider: In a world where the superhero movies are endless, and endlessly upping the stakes to Earth-smashing, 9/11-evoking levels, how badly do we need a movie that's just about kicking pollution's ass and having a cool group of friends from around the world? THR's report oddly doesn't specify if this beast will be live-action or CGI (there was a failed attempt at a live-action Cartoon Network series a few years ago), but whatever. Earth, fire, wind, water, heart all day. (And somebody get Don Cheadle on the line.

Screenwriters the world over must've stopped generating new ideas because there is a big-screen adaptation of "Captain Planet and the Planeteers" in the works.
THR reports that Sony Pictures is in final negotiations to pick up the rights to the 1990s environmental cartoon for an adaptation by producers Mark Gordon ("Grey's Anatomy), Don Murphy ("The Transformers") and Susan Montford.
"Captain Planet" told the story of five teens, each from a different continent (North America, Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia and South America), who'd been given powers by Gaia, the earth spirit, in order to protect the planet from polluters. When they weren't strong enough, their powers combined to summon the one and only Captain Planet. (You remember the chant: "Earth! Wind! Water!...")
It's too bad Gordon, Murphy and Montford's powers couldn't combine to create an original movie.
