10. Birdemic: Shock and Terror (2010) — 1.7 IMDb Score
Don’t know about you, but we can’t shake off the feeling that Birdemic was created solely because someone drunkenly decided that the word was a good pun. The movie follows two brave heroes trying to save their town from murderous mutated birds, so yeah… Worse yet, there are also Birdemic 2 & 3 with even lower ratings.
9. Pledge This! (2006) — 1.7 IMDb Score
An explicit campus comedy following a beautiful and scheming sorority president as she tries to profit from an FHM sorority competition. Paris Hilton as a lead star. What could go wrong? Admittedly, everything. From terrible toilet humor to including gross and provocative scenes for the sake of it, Pledge This! is awful from start to finish.
8. Manos: The Hands of Fate (1966) — 1.6 IMDb Score

This weekend, “Wicked” star Cynthia Erivo will receive the Gold Ally honor at the Gold House Gold Gala, and filmmaker Jon M. Chu will present the award to her.
Ahead of the Gala, Chu spoke with Variety celebrating his leading lady. He recalls the first time he met her over Zoom while casting for his upcoming movie musical “Wicked.”
Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel that inspired Broadway’s acclaimed musical of the same name, “Wicked” precedes Dorothy’s arrival in Oz and tells the legend of the world and the story behind Elphaba, (Erivo) the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda (Ariana Grande), who becomes the good witch.
Chu shares insight into the performance that blew him away, and why Erivo receiving the Gold Ally award has special meaning for him.

When the Nintendo Entertainment System hit back in the ’80s, we saw this influx in the concept of gaming accessories. The light gun was iconic, allowing you to shoot down ducks and cowboys. The Power Glove and Rob the Robot looked godly, but worked like garbage. The Power Pad was a brilliant novelty of the time. The Game Genie was a literal game-changer. Playing games was one thing, but How we played the games was another avenue to be explored.
Not every accessory made such a footprint in video game history. They couldn’t all be shilled by Lucas during a throwaway scene in The Wizard. Some concepts fell into obscurity, like when Atari tried to make a headband controller for the 2600 that would control the game based on your “thoughts.”
I really should include the Atari Mindlink on this list of forgotten video game accessories, but unfortunately, it never got released.

South African filmmaker Neill Blomkamp has directed five major feature films to date: the Oscar-nominated "District 9" in 2009, the class-conscious sci-fi tragedy "Elysium" in 2013, the oddball "Short Circuit"/"RoboCop" mashup "Chappie" in 2015, the low-budget stinker "Demonic" in 2021, and now the video-game-adjacent biography "Gran Turismo" in 2023.
With the exception of "Demonic," each of Blomkamp's films is explicitly or implicitly about class. "District 9" is about alien visitors who are forced to live in a run-down shanty town outside of Johannesburg. "Elysium" features a posh space station where the wealthy live in comfort while the impoverished live on the overheated, overpopulated Earth below. "Chappie" is an Acab movie about a police robot coming to fight for the people and against its corporate creators.
"Gran Turismo," meanwhile, is about Jann Mardenborough (Archie Madekwe), an expert player of the titular racing video game, who is tapped by Nissan to become a race car driver for real.

If you were in Simi Valley, California, this past Monday night and just wanted to knock down some pins at Harley’s Valley Bowl, then you were probably pretty surprised by what you saw when you walked through the bowling alley’s door: Dave Grohl hopping on stage with Taylor Hawkins’ son, Shane Hawkins, to play a set of classic rock covers with the late Hawkins’ former side project Chevy Metal. Check out the setlist and watch videos of the performance below.
That’s right, Grohl joined the band for an upbeat, uplifting performance, which not only included songs from classic artists like Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, Queen, and more, but also featured additional guest appearances from living rock legends. Stephen Perkins of Jane’s Addiction and Porno for Pyros, Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Gregg Bissonette, known for his work with David Lee Roth and others,...

Shane Hawkins, the son of late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, sat behind the kit with his dad’s covers band Chevy Metal at a couple of recent California gigs. The young stickman showed off his dynamic chops during shows July 27th and 29th at Gold Pacific Studios in Newport Beach and The Canyon in Agoura Hills, respectively.
Taylor Hawkins formed Chevy Metal in 2013, and would routinely gig with the outfit until his passing in March 2022. Shane, meanwhile, has proven to be a very skilled drummer himself, as seen at Foo Fighters’ September 2022 tribute concerts for Taylor, as well as a guest appearance at the Foos’ recent Boston Calling gig.
Shane pounded his way through songs by Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Mötley Crüe, The Police, Thin Lizzy, and more over the two nights (setlists here and here). Fan-filmed footage of him playing the Crüe’s “Looks That Kill,” Zeppelin’s “Moby Dick,...

Nintendo in the mid-to-late 80s sure was something to behold. It’s probably the closest thing the video game industry had to a monopoly. Sure, the Sega Master System was around and Atari was still on life support, but the Nintendo Entertainment System was absolutely dominant in society. We didn’t even call it “the Nes.” It was just “Nintendo.” For many, “playing video games” was “playing Nintendo.”
Nintendo’s major market share led to some interesting marketing experiments. Captain N: The Game Master was an animated series that not only advertised different games as part of its lore, but even included third-party game heroes like Simon Belmont and Mega Man as supporting characters. Then there’s The Wizard: an attempt to promote the upcoming Super Mario Bros. 3 via a bizarre family film version of Rain Man that included the questionable choice of casting Christian Slater and doing nothing with him.

Cynthia Erivo shared a sweet message about her experience filming Wicked and how one particular scene really spoke to her.
In an Instagram post, the Oscar nominee, who plays Elphaba in the movie adaptation of the award-winning musical, explained that they had just finished shooting “I’m Not That Girl.” The song is performed halfway through the first act in which Elphaba expresses her love for Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey).
“When we had come to the end of that moment, my heart broke open and tears fell. (Please know this happens Often),” she wrote in a long caption. “I thought of us, the ones who often feel like they’re on the outside. The ones who don’t know that their differences, oddities, quirks are what make them beautiful and special. The ones who, for some reason, believe they can’t be loved and I felt proud to sing a song...

Tubi opens June with an intense WWII drama “Inglourious Basterds.” Allied officer Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) assembles a team of five tough Jewish soldiers to spread fear throughout the Third Reich. They have one assignment: assassinate Nazi leaders. Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed the unconventional war drama. Eli Roth, Melanie Laurent, and Christopher Walz co-star.
Watch the trailer of “Inglourious Basterds”:
The network is also streaming the original documentary “Mystery Unsolved: The Adnan Syed Story” on June 7. The murder of teenager Hae Min Lee was the focal point of a “Serial” podcast, which questioned if boyfriend Syed was her killer. After serving 22 years in prison, Syed was released, still proclaiming his innocence. Now, he may return.
Another streamer original, “Magic Carpet Rides,” arrives June 14. It centers on a social influencer torn between sharing her budding romance or honoring her boyfriend’s request to keep their life private.

“A Nice Meal,” the penultimate installment of Barry, opens with Barry hallucinating after an undetermined amount of time spent wearing the sensory deprivation goggles Jim Moss has placed over his eyes. There is darkness, then a glimpse of the desolate plains of the house where he and Sally have lived with John, then the beach from Hell he visited last season. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Barry Season 4 Episode 6, “The Wizard.”] Barry (Bill Hader), after the post-time jump in the final season of the dark comedy, has returned to Los Angeles with a plan: kill Gene (Henry Winkler) after getting word of the movie being made about him with his former acting teacher consulting. After listening to podcasts about whether or not murder is Ok and buying a gun, Barry does end the episode approaching Gene’s open front door. But then someone puts a bag over his head … and he comes to, in front of Jim (Robert Wisdom), whose daughter he killed. So what’s coming for Barry, not that he’s in that garage? “I get to make a nine-course meal out of this. He’s in the garage, and we know what that means, and I don’t know whether I want to do it through his mind or through his body,” Wisdom tells TV Insider.

Barry spends a good chunk of “The Wizard” listening to different religious podcasts, pastor-shopping for a man of the cloth who will tell him it’s acceptable to murder Gene Cousineau. Eventually, he finds one — voiced, naturally, by comedian Bill Burr — who says it’s Ok. But it’s clear by the simple fact of the search that Barry is going to do what he wants to do no matter what, and will eventually find some sort of justification,...

[Editor’s Note: This post contains spoilers for Barry, Season 4, Episode 6, “the wizard.”]
They may not have acting class anymore, but at least Barry and Gene still share a pathological urge to manipulate stories to suit their needs. And in “the wizard,” they’ve both landed on that age-old method perfected by narcissists everywhere — carefully interpreting religious teachings to prove that everything they do is correct. Their complementary commitment to self-serving righteousness not only proves these characters are more alike than they’d care to admit, but also grounds Barry’s ongoing dissection of how easily spirituality can be disfigured into hypocrisy.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Barry” Season 4, Episode 6, “The Wizard.”]
Intuitively, “Barry” is in a darker place. Getting there has been a slow-motion process over the show’s whole run, even if it’s intensified in Season 4. Seemingly chipper characters have seen the edges of their personality corroded away. Loved ones have been murdered in matter-of-fact manners. The giant nihilistic cloud that started brewing with the central “Barry” premise — a hired killer confronted with the idea that there might be more to life than ending it — has pretty much engulfed everyone.
This week’s “The Wizard” adds another crushing prospect: In this world, the only cure for wanting revenge is death. Whether by their proximity to Barry (Bill Hader) or some unscratchable itch inside them, each person has something they want to make up for or someone they hold responsible for a simmering grudge. In Season 4, trying to outrun that feeling hasn’t worked. Ignoring it hasn’t worked,...

Fresh off the $1 billion-plus success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” the next big-deal video game adaptation has dropped its first trailer and poster. Rather than attempt to make a workable fictional narrative from a series of racing video games, the filmmakers have opted to adapt a true story connected to the games.
The film, penned by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin, and helmed by “District 11” director Neil Blomkamp, is based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough (played by Archie Madekwe in the film) whose video game skills won a series of Nissan competitions and allowed him a shot at being an actual race car driver. “From Gamer to Racer,” the tagline states and it’s an interesting narrative that would be intriguing even sans the IP surrounding it.

The Super Mario Bros Movie. From the title you probably already know if you're inclined to see it, and in truth I've not angle enough to persuade you otherwise. It's flat, not quite lifeless, more two-dimensional than many of the videogames it borrows from. It's saved not with a memory card but a single performance, but that's not enough to make it worth recommending as the same skills are on display in other, more entertaining, fare.
The 1993 outing (Super Mario Bros.) is two words shorter and 12 minutes longer and a glorious, trippy, failure. It adds more to the weird canon of Nintendo movies than this one does, as do corporate hagiography Tetris and 1989's The Wizard. In and among this film's numerous references to other pictures I found myself thinking of another videogame movie, the weird recursive exercise in nostalgia that was Ready Player One.

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley's upcoming fantasy film "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," due in theaters on March 31, will be the fourth live-action film to be based on the celebrated role-playing game first published by Gary Gygax and Dave Arenson in 1974. The game version of "Dungeons & Dragons" has had a colorful and fraught history, offering a popular activity that both nerds and metalheads could enjoy, while also often attracting the ire of right-wing censorship groups who felt its themes of magic and pretend were somehow damaging the minds of the nation's youth.
It remains popular to this day, periodically appearing in popular media. It was featured in an episode of the short-lived but beloved 1999 TV series "Freaks and Geeks" which, maybe not incidentally, starred co-director Daley when he was 14. [Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Better Call Saul” Season 6, Episode 4, “Hit and Run.”]
One of the ways that “Better Call Saul” keeps you on your toes is reminding you that there’s always another corner of Albuquerque to discover. It’s not all trips to the courthouse or rendezvouses at roadside diners or meetings in law firm boardrooms. So when “Hit and Run” opens with a glimpse at suburbia, as seen through the eyes of a pair of neighborhood folks seemingly more concerned with homeowner’s association to-dos than regional drug trafficking concerns, it’s a reminder that the net can always be cast wider.
Of course, these aren’t exactly ordinary residents counting down the days to the next cul-de-sac bake sale. They’re employees in the ever-widening Gus Fring empire, part of a house-sized security detail with one key directive: keep the Chicken Man alive. It’s the early-2000s American Southwest equivalent...

The stakes of the original 1996 “Space Jam” were always silly: To keep the beloved Looney Tunes out of the clutches of an uninspired alien businessman who wanted to use their visage to trump up his failing amusement park, the tribe enlisted Michael Jordan to play a space-set basketball game to earn their freedom. That concept is strange enough (though not strange enough to keep the film from making over $250 million at the box office and capturing the hearts and minds of an entire generation of kids); even stranger was that this blatantly commercial film was about the dangers of, well, commercialization. Free the Tunes from a life of corporate servitude by sticking them inside a ridiculous blockbuster designed to sell merchandise for a major entertainment conglomerate and one of the biggest sports franchises in the world? Oh, the irony.

The Strange Brew Cult Movie night returns at their new home, the Arkadin Cinema & Bar, with a nostalgic screening of Fred Savage in The Wizard on Wednesday, July 7 at 8:30 pm (movie starts at sundown on the backlot Patio). The Arkadin is located at 5228 Gravois Ave, St Louis, Mo 63116. If you’ve never seen “The Wizard” starring Fred Savage & Jenny Lewis, it’s a strange flick where three kids travel across the country alone to play in a Nintendo contest and visit a dinosaur theme park. It might just be a 2-hour long advertisement for Nintendo, but it’s definitely a late 80s/ early 90s idealized vision of a childhood adventure.
Jon Scorfina will be hosting a Super Mario Bros. 3 tournament (two-minute tries for the high score) before the flick with prizes and we’ll have a Rilo Kiley/ Jenny Lewis soundtrack playing in the background. Tickets are $9 and available here: https://arkadin.

Jenny Lewis has been an indie icon for so long that it’s sometimes difficult to remember she started her career out as a child actor. When I was young, my brother used to insist he was better than me at Super Mario Bros. I remember challenging him by noting that Super Mario Bros. was not a competitive game and that neither of us had even been able to finish it. He then asserted he was bigger than me and could beat me up. It wasn’t exactly the Lincoln-Douglas debates, but it was the format that defined disagreements in our early years.
So while younger siblings everywhere may be looking forward to the recently revealed Super Mario Bros. 35 simply for the chance to settle these arguments once and for all, others are understandably hesitant. Do we need a Super Mario battle royale title in the style of Tetris 99? Tetris is at least a game with a rich history of competitive modes. Even children of the ’80s knew that Super Mario Bros. was not a competitive game.

“Adventure Time” often seemed too good for this world. Over eight years and 10 seasons, Pendleton Ward’s cartoon odyssey was a colorful and quirky celebration of friendship that doubled as post-apocalyptic fantasy. Early on, the show oscillated from silly gags to poignant observations and back again, all while expanding on a rich and expansive mythology with boundless possibilities (at least until Cartoon Network pulled the plug). The extensive 2018 finale put a definitive end point on the exploits of human Jake and his shapeshifting talking dog pal Jake, but “Adventure Time” was always about waking up to a world much larger and sophisticated than any one person can discern. Chicago – These are strange and isolating times for everyone. As someone who thrives on covering concerts, during the pandemic I sometimes feel like a part of me is missing. It may not have been the most action-packed episode, but viewers did get the general idea of the show's direction by the end of the Stargirl Season 1 Episode 2.
For the remainder of Stargirl Season 1, it looks like Courtney and Pat will track down the members of the Injustice Society of America and bring them to, well, justice.
What is still unclear is who will join them in their efforts, as the second installment was once again 'The Courtney and Pat Show' with guest appearances from Barbara and Brainwave.
As a carryover from Stargirl Season 1 Episode 1, that makes sense to a certain extent, but with only a 13-episode season, there's only so much time to get to know the rest of the cast.
