It’s time to light the lights.
The Jim Henson Company and Shout! Factory have announced a worldwide distribution deal to bring 13 of Henson’s popular series and specials to streaming, broadcast, and home entertainment distribution platforms across all territories, including the global AVOD premiere of Henson’s award-winning “Farscape.”
The announcement was made Tuesday by Shout! Factory’s CEO Garson Foos, Jeffrey Peisch, Shout’s Senior Vice Present of Programming & New Business Development, and Kerry Novick, Vice President of Global Distribution at The Jim Henson Company.
While “Farscape,” Henson’s original sci-fi series that ran for 88 episodes and mixed human performers with puppet characters, and the miniseires, “Farscape: The Peacemaker Wars,” which served as the series’ conclusion, are the biggest draws of this new arrangement, there are plenty of other titles to get excited about (especially if you’re a longtime Henson-head). Also included as part of the deal...

Kermit, Fozzie, Miss Piggy, Gonzo (or is it “Gary?”) and the rest of the Muppet gang are headed back to the small screen after their return to cinemas in 2011/2012 and last year. And now, after screening the 11-minute “pilot presentation” short that scored the new series a commission at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Us network ABC has put the video online for everyone to see. Simply titled The Muppets, the series aims to offer a slightly more grown-up approach to the Muppets’ stories (not that Jim Henson’s creations haven’t told jokes that sail over kids’ heads for years), exploring their personal lives alongside their showbiz adventures. So expect more romantic tension between Kermit and Miss Piggy and a look at life in Los Angeles and elsewhere with a Modern Family/ The Office-style mockumentary approach.Big Bang Theory co-creator Bill Prady (who got his start writing on...

The folks at io9 drew up a list of the 12 worst Muppets. It should disturb and haunt you, but not because the list is correct: It berates quirky and forgotten Muppets when their weirdness often represents more than what meets the eye. Surely there are annoying Muppet qualities, but that's the joy of the Muppets: They are annoying. To condemn their grating qualities is to misunderstand what makes them cool and even defiant. Tina Fey shakes her head in contempt. So without further ado, I'm defending the 12 "Least Wanted" Muppets. I'm already so flustered and squawky that you'd think I was voiced by Frank Oz. 1. Pepe the Prawn Latin stereotypes abounding? Perhaps. But Pepe the Prawn's exasperated, self-conscious behavior is more reminiscent of the wonderful Telly Monster than anyone else. You don't hate Telly, do you? Wow. Maybe you hate Telly. And are you telling me you can resist that frantic,...

The That Puppet Game Show co-producer on how his father got the Muppets on screen, and why London feels like home
Above the entrance to The Jim Henson Company lot in Hollywood stands one cultural icon, Kermit the Frog, dressed as another, Chaplin's Little Tramp. Chaplin built this lot in 1917 and sold it in 1953 after Hollywood blacklisted him. Now it's an active working studio, the headquarters of a puppetry empire that bestrides the world like a green-felt colossus, and also a living memorial to the man who might be called the Other Dad to three generations of children raised on Sesame Street and The Muppet Show (I count myself among them). And it's a measure of the centrality to modern American popular culture of Henson's cast of characters, and their abiding universality, that Kermit's donning of Chaplin's outfit seems not sacrilegious, but entirely natural and right.

The Muppets, depending on where you live, are about to return or have returned to the big screen, with that wonderful new blockbuster paradigm of a movie that is both a reboot and sequel (or prequel) at the same time.
Simply titled The Muppets, the movie stars and is co-written by Judd Apatow regular, Jason Segel. The original songs are written by one half of Flight Of The Conchords, Brett McKenzie. The traditional Muppet movie roster of celebrity cameos includes the likes of Sarah Silverman, Zach Galifianakis and Neil Patrick Harris.
So: are the Muppets getting a little edgier this time around? If you look at the history of the Muppets, not really.

Sesame Street. The Muppets. Labyrinth. Jim Henson is famous for many shows, films and characters. Dog City isn't one of them, but it's a great little piece of what made Jim Henson so special. It's a one-hour mini-movie, part of the short-lived 1989 prime time series The Jim Henson Hour. It's essentially a spoof of film noir, set in the 30s in a city populated by dogs. The story's narrated by Rowlf the Dog (one of Henson's earliest characters) and follows the good guy dog Ace Yu as he arrives in Dog City and takes on the resident gangster Bugsy Them. If you think this sounds like a hammy, self-aware parody with lots of bad puns, you're absolutely right. But it's great, and it actually won Jim Henson a Primetime Emmy for best Outstanding Directing in a Variety or Music Program.

"Muppets Bohemian Rhapsody" debuted on the Muppets' newly inaugurated YouTube channel just three weeks ago. But nearly ten million views later, it already feels like a signpost that we'll look back on fondly -- a goofy capper to a rotten decade, a bridge to whatever lies ahead, and perhaps a future time capsule, a reminder of what it felt like to be alive at this strange time. It's a pop culture upper in a league with two classic bubblegum chart-toppers that heralded the shift from '60s darkness to '70s hedonism: John Lennon's "Whatever Gets You Through the Night" and the Captain & Tennille's cover of "Love Will Keep Us Together."
There's no world-shattering depth to those songs, just a straightforward reassurance that even though times are tough, as long as we're capable of having fun, things aren't quite as bad as they seem. "Muppets Bohemian Rhapsody" and the...
