The Chicago Tribune reports that veteran actor Stacy Keach had a heart attack last week, during or immediately before a performance of the Ernest Hemingway one-man play Pamplona. The opening night performance—in which Keach, whose credits include everything from Planes and Titus to The Ninth Configuration and American History X, plays Hemingway himself—was canceled midway through, after the actor seemed “ill at ease” and unable to perform his lines.
Keach is expected to make a full recovery, and was released from the hospital today. Although Pamplona’s current run at Chicago’s Goodman Theater has been canceled, the actor is quoted as being anxious to reschedule as soon as his still-busy calendar has an open spot. “The first thing Stacy said was ‘When are we rescheduling?’” the theater’s artistic director said after a recent hospital visit. “I told him we’d figure that out. But first he...

Connected film festival attendees learned about Pedro Almodóvar before everybody else, especially if they had an understanding of new developments in Spanish cinema. Film school had shown us nothing but the very exceptional work of Luis Buñuel, most of which is really from Mexico and France. In the 1980s we Angelenos were just getting access to films by the old-school ‘traditional’ rebel Spaniards Carlos Saura and Juan Antonio Bardem.

Criterion digitally restores this earlier release, a combination offering of Robert Siodmak’s 1946 film noir masterpiece The Killers paired with Don Siegel’s retro 1964 remake. Famed adaptations of Ernest Hemingway’s short story, both filmmakers take liberties with the original material to create aggressively different products. Siodmak’s version is not only the German ex-pat’s enduring masterpiece, it’s a definite cornerstone of classic American film noir. Though Siegel’s 60s rehash is considered tacky pastiche of the era, it’s brutal, hard boiled B-grade pulp, notable for its own significant instances.
Siodmak’s version arrived during a golden era of noir, premiering a year after WWII officially ended, with cinematic masculine representation on the eve of an overhaul as method acting would soon reign supreme. Hemingway’s spare story gets a face life from Anthony Veiller (The Stranger; Night of the Iguana), using the murder as a jumping...

One story, three films, one Blu-ray disc. Excellent! Last night I finished my dive into the Criterion Collection's new Blu-ray release The Killers, which features two feature films and one short film, all adapted from the short story by Ernest Hemingway and all different in their own right and yet the same. From the noirish black-and-white of Robert Siodmak's 1946 original to Don Siegel's made-for-tv, 1964 adaptation shot in bright colors and telling the story from completely different perspective and yet, coming back to similar moral ground, or at least what may be referred to as "guy code" a la Hemingway. And don't forget Andrei Tarkovsky's 1956 short he made as a film student and you have one impressive package. If you're unfamiliar with Hemingway's short you can read it here, or, better yet, there's a reading of it by actor Stacy Keach included on this Blu-ray. Playing closest...

“We’Re Gonna Kill The Swede”
By Raymond Benson
The Criterion Collection gave us the DVD versions of these two excellent crime thrillers twelve years ago. The company has now seen fit to upgrade the release to Blu-ray.
Based loosely on a short story by Ernest Hemingway, both versions of The Killers begin with the author’s premise and then take off from there in very different directions. It’s interesting to see how the respective screenwriters adapted the story and then created two disparate feature-length tales out of it. In Hemingway’s piece, two hit men arrive in a small town looking for “the Swede.” They terrorize the owner, cook, and a customer in a diner in an attempt to find the guy. After the killers leave in frustration, the customer runs to the Swede’s boarding house and finds him in bed with his clothes on. He warns the Swede about the men,...

In my daily perusing of the Internets, I came across this post. A short post, it says (with one little snip):
“Dear Old People (and this includes me), the kids today are not hip to your cultural references. This is not a failure of education. Things change. The end.”
It’s not about comics or the movies or television. If anything it’s about Baby Boomers and how insufferable we can be. The popular art that moved us must move you, or you’re ignorant.
This is not a new attitude. My mother, for example, loved E. Nesbitt and J. D. Salinger, so she thought I should read them. My high school English teacher thought that Fitzgerald and Hemingway were the greatest writers of the 20th Century, and skewed their curricula accordingly.
None of this was as insufferable as my generation has been.
In Hollywood, my generation has minded...

Stacy Keach has been tapped to co-star in the Fox drama pilot Prison Break, directed by Brett Ratner. The pilot, from 20th Century Fox TV, studio-based Adelstein-Parouse Prods. and Original TV, centers on an engineer (Wentworth Miller) who inserts himself into a prison he designed to help his brother (Dominic Purcell), a death row inmate who insists he is innocent, escape. Keach plays a warden at the prison. Paul Scheuring, who penned the pilot, and Ratner are executive producing Prison Break with Dawn Parouse, Marty Adelstein and Neal Moritz. Keach won a Golden Globe in 1989 for his title role in the miniseries Hemingway, which also earned the actor an Emmy nomination. He is best known for playing hard-boiled private eye Mike Hammer in a series of TV movies, a primetime series on CBS and a syndicated series. His credits also include the Fox comedy Titus and the feature American History X. Keach is repped by Diverse Talent Group and manager Chuck Binder.
