Badasses of Horror: Part One

5 November 2009 4:34 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

If you want to talk about badass crap, you really can’t do a hell of a lot worse than the horror genre. Whether it’s crazy Eastern Europeans with slicked-back hair and overly developed canine teeth chomping down on the necks of scantily clad maidens or demented, murderous psychopaths running around in body armor made from human skin and carving X’s into the chest cavities of wayward coeds with gasoline-powered gardening implements, horror never seems to disappoint when it comes to violent homicide or paint-bombing dungeon walls with a thick coat of crimson substances. Therefore, in an effort to promote my new book Badass: A Relentless Onslaught Of The Toughest Warlords, Vikings, Samurai, Pirates, Gunslingers, And Military Commanders To Ever Live (in which I talk about such real-life badasses as the notorious Vlad the Impaler; see the trailer here), I will attempt to discuss some of the toughest »

Exclusive: 'Lobo: Highway To Hell' Miniseries Joins Anthrax And Comic Books

2 November 2009 6:30 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

From MTV.Com: In the Anthrax song "King Size," which also happens to mention the Hulk, the Devil lives in California. In November's "Lobo: Highway to Hell" miniseries, however, Anthrax lead guitarist Scott Ian has written a new version of Satan just outside of the DC Universe. For his cosmic horror/action tale, Ian wanted a villain as big and evil as he could make him—and that required building Satan from scratch.

"Totally new," Ian told MTV News when asked which version of the Devil he'll put DC's moviebound bounty hunter up against when the first issue hits shelves November 4. "[The story] has nothing to do with anything really from the DC Universe."

DC's Lucifer has long been established as the ruler of Hell for the Dcu, but taking the story outside of continuity allowed Ian to develop a less dainty interpretation of the Prince of Darkness.

Rolling Stone Reviews The 'New Moon' Soundtrack

23 October 2009 11:07 AM, PDT | twilightersanonymous.com | See recent TwilightersAnonymous news »

The New Moon soundtrack officially hit shelves a week ago and since then weve seen a great review from Entertainment Weekly mixed reviews from fans and today we get a very positive review from the people over at Rolling Stone. In their review they compare New Moon to John Hughes Pretty in Pink and even go so far as to say that Bram Stoker would be proud. Read their review below in which they gave the New Moon original soundtrack 4.5 starsThe genius of the Twilight saga is the way it celebrates the passion of the allAmerican fang hag with Robert Pattinson as the perfect plasmaslurping pinup boy Hes hot hes sexy and hes undead. So New Moon is a movie soundtrack but its also a concept album about the bond between teenage girls and their imaginary bloodsucker boyfriends. As a movie New Moon isnt too far from Pretty in Pink except now Duckies a werewolf. »

Supernatural: Where is Lucifer?

16 October 2009 4:15 AM, PDT | buddytv.com | See recent BuddyTV news »

For Supernatural season 5, we were promised the Apocalypse and a battle with Lucifer.  But so far, for the most part, Lucifer has been Mia.  Where's the Prince of Darkness when you need him?

I'm still enjoying this season of Supernatural, particularly for the creative ways the show finds to use comedy in a deadly serious drama.  But what about Lucifer?  In the first six episodes, he's only appeared three times, and each of those times he was barely in it. »

Hall Of Horrors! A Conversation with Rob Hall Part I

15 October 2009 11:53 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

On the set of Alhambra, California's Powerman 5000 video 'Supervillain' , there's a green screen, special FX and a large crew. As Spider One gyrates before the screen, director Rob Hall leaps out of his directors chair and urges the singer to "Give it all ya got, man!"

Giving it all he's got is the ethos that Rob Hall lives by. Since his days as monster maker for Roger Corman all the way through Buffy and Angel, Hall's creatures were scarier, freakier and more creative than his big-budget competition. When he cuts loose on a movie, as he did with the rabid residents of Quarantine and his infected populace in the superb and disturbing remake of The Crazies, the results speak for themselves.

Not content at just being the next Rob Bottin, Hall also has a band with actor Hal Sparks and turned to directing. Besides his semi-autobiographical Lightning Bug, he »

Stars in Rewind: Viggo Mortensen in 'The Prophecy'

12 October 2009 1:15 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

As you probably remember, we were supposed to get a little movie called The Road this week, but it was delayed until November 25. But that doesn't mean you can't enjoy some Viggo Mortensen anyway. Seeing as we're celebrating villains, and The Road will be one of those affairs you don't want to cheese up with a clip like this, now is the perfect time to remind you of Mortensen's pre-Aragorn screentime. I don't mean that disparagingly (they all start somewhere), but I'm very glad Lord of the Rings helped leave the dark days of The Prophecy behind for critical and popular acclaim.

But hey, not every actor has the Prince of Darkness on his early resume. Not surprisingly, he manages to turn in a good performance and makes a very frightening Lucifer (I would bravely argue that makes a scarier Satan than Al Pacino or Robert De Niro, but I'm »

Us Vs. The Moon: Nasa Provides The Bombs, We Provide The Soundtrack

9 October 2009 10:29 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Early Friday (October 9) morning, Nasa fired the latest salvo in its ongoing war with the Mooninites, smashing a rocket into a lunar crater just because they felt like it.

Ok, that's not necessarily true. The stated purpose of Nasa's mission was to discover water ice buried beneath the surface of the moon, but we here in the MTV Newsroom would like to think that Nasa's real intent was twofold. First, to get revenge for the infamous Mooninite invasion of Boston in 2007, and second, to remind those moon jerks that the Earth still is the big dog on the galactic block … and, well, if you can't run with the big dogs, You Better Stay On The Porch.

So, in celebration of the Earth being #1 — and to rub it in the face of those lunar losers even more — we've made a playlist of our favorite "Moon" songs. Yeah, that's right, we're calling you out, »

Movies We Love: Halloween

7 October 2009 10:58 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Halloween (1978) It's Halloween, everyone's entitled to one good scare. Why We Love It This film scared the poop out of nearly everyone who saw it. If it didn't scare you when you were a kid, you probably grew up to be a serial killer (in which case the movie initially played like an instructional video for you). With October gently nipping at our heels, I feel it's the perfect time to celebrate the genius of this horror classic. Halloween reinvented the slasher film even as the genre was in its infancy. John Carpenter created a landscape of pure terror that feels inescapably tangible. Nothing in this film resides outside the realm of possibility and the honesty of the violence is striking. Carpenter took a simple story about a madman stalking babysitters and turned it into not only a legendary horror film, but one of the most successful independent films of all time. Actually »

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus Poster

Set in the present day, director Terry Gilliam’s fantastical morality tale follows the traveling show of the mysterious Dr. Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) — a man who once won a bet with the Devil himself, and possesses the unique ability to guide the imagination of others. Many centuries ago, Dr. Parnassus won immortality in a bet that found the malevolent Mr. Nick (Tom Waits) coming up short. While few would be foolish enough to try their luck against the powers of darkness a second time, Dr. Parnassus did precisely that — this time trading his mortality for youth on the understanding that his firstborn would become the property of Mr. Nick when the child reaches his or her 16th birthday. »

What If Veteran Celebrities Starred in the 'Twilight' Saga?

23 September 2009 9:35 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

We know that some of our readers are bound to take exception to our occasional ribbing of author Stephenie Meyer's 'Twilight' series. It's just that most of us around here like our vampires sinister and bloody; dark and foreboding the way Bram Stoker intended them.

Yes, it's true that Stoker's 1897 novel "Dracula" definitely explored sexual mores and lust during the Victorian era (we get that), but he didn't make the Prince of Darkness a poofey vampire who stares at the object of his desire for hours as she sleeps, telling her, "I respect you as a person."

That's not a vampire story, that's a bad Harlequin Romance novel!

All of this got us to thinking: How could you amp up 'The Twilight Saga' to give it a broader appeal to those whose vampire toolkit consisted of the Carpenters and Hammers of filmdom?

What if you spiced up the 'Twilight' »

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Fall of Fear’ HD Titles Including ‘Army of Darkness,’ ‘Shaun of the Dead,’ More

16 September 2009 1:03 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Universal is getting an early jump on the annual wave of horror-themed titles that usually hit stores in the week before Halloween with new Blu-Ray editions of three horror-comedy classics and, well, one stinker that surely looks good in HD if nothing else. Add “An American Werewolf in London,” “Army of Darkness,” “Shaun of the Dead,” and “Van Helsing” to your collection.

The “Fall of Fear” promotions actually includes 31 re-promoted titles with Halloween-themed wrap but only four are available on Blu-Ray and were sent for review. But the standard releases include reissues by two of our favorite directors and influential filmmakers in the genre - John Carpenter and Wes Craven.

For Carpenter, repackaged titles include “The Thing,” “Prince of Darkness,” “They Live,” and “Village of the Damned”. Personally, we would suggest picking them up in that order. As for Craven, the titles are “The Serpent and the Rainbow, »

We gave each member of the five-piece band a chance to spill their guts on their favorite horror films.

Holy Terror!: 11 Creepy Catholic Horror Films

Holy Terror: The Catholic Church in Modern Horror Cinema

The Roman Catholic Church has been an inspiration for the macabre and terrifying for, well, centuries. Most recently there was a revival in interest in the religious, supernatural horror film in the early to mid 2000's in a cycle that ran from Stigmata to The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

Horror rose to prominence and box office success in the 1970's with a long running series of films peppered with deeply religious themes. The church was under scrutiny in The Omen. a willing participant in the phenomenon that was The Exorcist. Beyond the obvious possession, Antichrist, and exorcism themed ripoffs there was the unique and internationally successful Blind Dead series with this undead crusading Templar Knights. The sleazy child murders of Fulci's Don't Torture A Ducking and the American giallo Alice, Sweet, Alice both featured heavy Catholic overtones. Further back we »
