Exclusive: Six New Zealand screenwriters have been chosen to participate in the inaugural Black List New Zealand Project.
The project, stemming from a partnership between the Black List and the New Zealand Film Commission, is a professional development workshop and mentorship series. Bolstered by the presence of global screen industry executives, who will head up panels, mentor the writers and advise them on fine-tuning their scripts, its aim is to amplify the voices of underrepresented filmmakers, while promoting relationships between writers and producers, and creating international opportunities for New Zealand feature films.
The six participating filmmakers will receive up to Nz$25,000 in development financing from the Nzfc for completing the next draft of their scripts. The scripts they submitted to land a spot at the Black List New Zealand Project cover genres ranging from romance to comedy, crime and horror, and were selected from a pool of 179 for their unique perspectives.

Joan Barnett, the Emmy-nominated producer of the television movie Adam, died in Boston at age 74 after a prolonged illness.
Barnett was an executive producer for Adam, a 1983 film about the kidnapping and murder of Adam Walsh and the attempt by his parents (including later reality crime drama host John Walsh) to pass national child protection laws in its wake.
At the end of each broadcast of the film, missing children’s photographs and descriptions were displayed along with a telephone number for tips on their whereabouts. Some 37 children were found as a result. President Ronald Reagan provided a voiceover on the photographs segment for the 1985 airing.
Barnett began her career as an associate producer and general manager for Alexander H. Cohen in New York, working on television specials, films and Broadway shows. In 1974, she moved to California and opened a casting company with Linda Otto.

"This is a lucrative business." Vision Films has released an official trailer for the latest animal preservation documentary Lone Gone Wild, the first feature film made by filmmaker Bill Neal. Long Gone Wild focuses on the plight of captive orcas, picking up where the acclaimed documentary Blackfish left off while telling a uniquely new and different story. The film covers "The Blackfish Effect", along with the case against captivity and The Whale Sanctuary Project and its model seaside sanctuary for retired orcas – providing a safe, permanent home in their natural habitat. Some of us think that after Blackfish, the fight is over, but it's far from over as there are still many dangers for whales and there are still many orcas locked up in captivity. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Bill Neal's documentary Long Gone ...

Documentary Now! is back with more biting documentary parodies that are just as sharp as before, but now feature an all-star cast.
“Art is not supposed to be safe. It’s supposed to be radical.”
Documentaries are powerful tools that aim to illuminate individuals, topics, or causes as the style of film immerses the audience into this new world and prepares them for the narrative that they're about to be sold.
Documentaries can turn ordinary people into heroes, educate you about persistent problems that you never even knew existed, or simply shine a light on something that it's long overdue to shine a light on. All of this magic of non-fiction filmmaking is present in Documentary Now!, it just also expertly figures out how to use the language of documentaries to deliver huge laughs. Three seasons in, this team has mastered this formula and delivers what might be their strongest season yet.

Just when you thought a “Company”-inspired episode starring John Mulaney, Taran Killam, and Renee Elise Goldsberry was the best trick “Documentary Now!” could pull for its upcoming third season, out comes Michael Keaton and Owen Wilson.
The pair of actors will star in an episode called “Batsh*t Valley,” the IFC doc parody series’ version of a story about a reclusive spiritual community, in the vein of “Wild Wild Country” and “The Source Family.” Wilson is set to star as the leader of this secluded group in the woodlands of Oregon, with Keaton playing the FBI agent bent on investigating and exposing the truth behind the entire operation.
Necar Zadegan will also star in the episode, written by Seth Meyers and directed by Alex Buono.
It’s the fourth announced installment for the forthcoming season, which debuts next year on February 20. Aside from the aforementioned Broadway reworking “Original Cast Album: Co-op,...

Every year, the studios take their best genre successes and try to push them beyond the technical ghetto. Oscar campaigners want to convince critics, guilds, and Oscar voters that their movie rises to the level of art. But it’s rare for fantasy, horror, thriller, action or comic-book movies to pass over to the Best Picture side.
When they do, it tends to be an exception like Peter Jackson’s fantasy trilogy “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. All three films scored Best Picture nominations and technical wins: “Fellowship” scored 13 nominations and wins for Makeup, Visual Effects, and Cinematography; “The Two Towers” earned six and won Sound Editing and VFX; and then came the ultimate triumph for the finale “The Return of the King”: a grand sweep of all 11 nominations including Best Picture. But while “Lotr” fell into the fantasy genre, it was boosted by the literary pedigree of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Long gone is the adorable pic that the 27-year-old singer posted in April of Gomez clutching his face and tenderly giving him a kiss on the cheek. Luckily for fans, there will always be the screenshot of his Instagram Stories, where he posted a picture of Gomez's Coach campaign with diamond emojis.

There is also the sweet snap of the two of them cuddling while he played video games.

Ryan Tedder is re-living some of his wild years.
The OneRepublic frontman looks back on being "broke as a bottle of wine" in the band's catchy new single, "Rich Love." Only Et was on the set of the feel-good music video, set on the famous 4th Street Bridge in Los Angeles.
"Everybody who moves to a major city has that moment where you have nothing and you kind of hate it when you're in it, but you don't realize how good it is," Tedder said of the inspiration. "When I moved to L.A., the roommates I had, the friends I had -- we were absolutely dead broke, but we had the best time."
In the second verse, Tedder sings about epic house parties and angry neighbors. Turns out, that moment was inspired by some very famous friends.

Long gone are the days of All the President’s Men. Now, in the internet era, a documentary about an investigative journalist will most likely consist of endless footage showing someone staring at a computer screen while surfing the internet. That, fortunately, is not the case with Ena and Ines Talakic’s doc about famed journalist/author Edward Jay Epstein, receiving its world premiere at the New York Film Festival. That its 81-year-old subject is so determinedly old-school in his shoe-leather approach is what makes Hall of Mirrors such fascinating viewing.

Tamara Keith and Scott Detrow never know when they might need to record a new episode of the “NPR Politics Podcast.” Just as listeners might listen to the podcast anytime or anywhere, Detrow and Keith regularly assemble episodes on the run, whenever news breaks, as fast as they can. Long gone are the days when you could only get your news at a certain time, by sitting in front of your radio or TV. And podcasts aren’t just smashing barriers because they’re available anytime, anywhere — they’re also informal in ways that encourage hosts to let down their guard.

Kaufman’s New York-based movie studio Troma Entertainment has produced and distributed more than 1,000 films, and in the process has helped launch the careers of some of Hollywood’s most successful talents.

Mid-summer brings the biggest limited opening of 2016, with a return to form by Woody Allen as new distributor Amazon Studios and partner Lionsgate pushed “Café Society” to numbers unseen since last December. It’s not at Allen’s top level, but a huge leap above his last two films as well as anything else so far this year.
For a totally different market, Dinesh D’Souza doc “Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party” had a limited opening in Middle America with strong front-loaded initial numbers. The political doc goes wider this Friday and could see a better eventual total —via an entirely different audience—than Allen’s film.

Mel Gibson does his own take on Taken, in incoming thriller Blood Father. Here's the trailer...
Mel Gibson’s movie career, for fairly understandable reasons, has not been anywhere near as prolific as it once was. He’s picked up roles in The Beaver, Machete Kills, The Expendables 3 and How I Spent My Summer Vacation. But the days he was one of the biggest draws at the box office? Long gone.
For his new film, he’s starring in Blood Father, as an ex-con proecting his daughter from drug dealers. It’s French-produced movie, from director Jean-Francois Richet, who helmed the Us remake of Assault On Precinct 13. It’s the kind of Euro-thriller that helped turned Liam Neeson into such a bankable action movie star, by the looks of it.
A trailer for the film – that lands in the Us next month – has popped up online.

Like the rest of the summer, it’s a mixed bag.
The good news: this weekend’s top two films, one opener and one holdover, grossed nearly $115 million. That’s better than the top two last year (holdovers “Jurassic World” and “Inside Out”).
The bad news: while “Finding Dory” is a huge success, “Independence Day: Resurgence” is a dud that will likely fall like a rock from its underwhelming opening.
Buddy comedy “Central Intelligence” enjoyed a strong second weekend, and low-budget horror flick “The Shallows” scored a better-than-expected opening, buoyed by rave reviews. But Stx’s risky opening strategy failed for Gary Ross’s historic epic “Free State of Jones,” starring Matthew McConaughey. Another national release in under 800 theaters bombed. “The Neon Demon” and its sub-$1 million haul is covered in Arthouse Audit. Long gone are the times when electronic music and nerd culture went hand in hand, but one of the most household names in mainstream Edm has forged a partnership that would suggest otherwise. Martin Garrix has announced that his new track titled “Oops” will be released as the official theme of YouTube Live at E3.
Garrix debuted the track during his performance at Indy 500 Snake Pit last week, and its 8 bit-reminiscent sections had sounded somewhat out of character for one of his releases. With the announcement that he will release it in conjunction with YouTube’s coverage of E3 – arguably the most renowned trade fair for gamers worldwide – suddenly the themes make more sense.
Martin Garrix will release “Oops” as a free giveaway across several platforms on June 13th, when YouTube Live at E3 kicks off. Until then, you can watch the video above to hear him talk about how the partnership came together.

Martin Garrix will release “Oops” as a free giveaway across several platforms on June 13th, when YouTube Live at E3 kicks off. Until then, you can watch the video above to hear him talk about how the partnership came together.

For better or worse, Wayward Pines begins its second season feeling like a whole new show. Sure, the titular town is still front and center—and those problematic abbies are still scratching at the fortified walls—but this is not the same place that Matt Dillon's Ethan sacrificed himself for at the end of the Fox series' first season. Long gone is the pretense of the peaceful idyll carefully cultivated until the not-so-dearly departed David Pilcher's (Toby Jones) watch, replaced instead by the fanatical First Generation's martial law. This semi-reboot, and the several fresh faces that come along with it, was born out of necessity, sure—what was originally intended as a one-and-done limited...

Kelly Ripa may no longer be mad as hell, but it has become quickly apparent that she's not going to take it anymore. The week of her "return" to Live! With Kelly and Michael is now behind her and today's installment of Masterbeef Theater further confirmed that Ripa has no intention of letting Michael Strahan off the hook before he leaves the show for good in two weeks. And why should she? Long gone are the days when a talk show host has to sit back and pretend that life is perfect on set, that the backstage wheeling and dealing has no effect on what occurs in front of the camera. More than ever, what's going on in real life is spilling over into TV land. Of course, that...

Tom Hiddleston mastered the yodel in preparation for his role as country music legend Hank Williams in his new film “I Saw the Light.” “I can yodel now,” Hiddleston told Jimmy Kimmel. “There comes a time in a man’s life when he’s called upon to yodel.” The host prompted Hiddleston to tease his musical prowess with a few lines from the Williams classic “Long Gone Lonesome Blues.” Both Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Hank’s wife Audrey, do their own singing in the drama. Hiddleston lived with musician Rodney Crowell in Nashville where he learned to tackle Williams’ trademark yodel. The British thespian also spoke about the high stakes involved playing an icon of American culture. “I take the responsibility seriously,” Hiddleston said. “I knew as a British actor going in to play such a loved icon of American music, I had to kind of commit myself to it.

Has Tom Hiddleston ruined his chance of being 007? As Jimmy Kimmel warned him last night, "James Bond does not yodel in any situation." And yet Hiddleston just yodeled on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," illustrating the skills he picked up playing American icon Hank Williams in "I Saw the Light."
As the brave actor put it, "There comes a time in a man's life when he's called upon to yodel." Truth.
The Bond discussion came first, after Kimmel asked Hiddleston about his role in "The Night Manager." The "Avengers" star had previously said he would embrace the opportunity to play Bond, but on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" he hedged a bit, saying discussion on the next Bond is a national pastime in England. It sounded like he was saying every British actor gets asked about it in every interview, and we shouldn't read anything into it. Kimmel asked a good question -- whether...

Now that the news has broken that the match between The Undertaker and Braun Strowman is mercifully off the table for WrestleMania 32, it’s time to take a moment to reflect on the five-star classic that could have been.
Who am I kidding? The bout would have been horrendous and apparently everyone but those in command at WWE was fully aware of it. Long gone are the days of The Undertaker clashing with giants, monsters and freakshows. Years of marquee matches against the likes of Shawn Michaels, Brock Lesnar, Triple H and Cm Punk have us expecting much more from The Deadman, regardless of the fact that he’s now pushing eighty.
WWE (read: Vince McMahon) apparently has a strong desire to push Strowman as an unstoppable monster, and while that may be warranted at some point, now is simply not the time. Reports are that once word...

It’s been a whirlwind of a week in the world of wrestling with fans buzzing over the arrivals of Aj Styles, Austin Aries and Shinsuke Nakamura in WWE. Styles made his highly anticipated debut in the 2016 Royal Rumble match while Aries appeared at last Friday’s set of Nxt tapings in Orlando. Days later, it was announced that Nakamura will be in action at Nxt TakeOver: Dallas.
How WWE will treat Nakamura in Nxt remains to be seen, but if the way they have utilized Styles so far on the main roster has been any indication, he will be just fine. He dominated the Japanese wrestling scene for over a decade and will now face a new set of challenges in Nxt, where he will face some of the greatest wrestlers in the world today.
It feels like every signing to the so-called developmental territory is more exciting than the last.

The promotion for the Royal Rumble PPV, which takes place on January 24, has thus far been weak. WWE have given themselves a lot of work to do on the go-home Raw this Monday, especially when it comes to establishing the undercard matches.
Even the main event is in need of some work, with a host of confusing messages having come out of the last few episodes of Raw. The exact constitution of the Rumble title match is still unknown at this point.
The lack of promotion is unfortunately typical of modern day WWE. Long gone are the days of actually selling a show, now it is more about selling the Network. Fans are buying into a collective package, with around million subscribers paying for the monthly specials regardless of what the card is.
WWE’s logic is perhaps that, even with no effort, the Royal Rumble match is always a draw.

Long gone are the days when games used to be enjoyed purely for their mechanics and the simple pleasure of guiding a generic avatar from point A to point B. Sure, a thriving indie scene has ensured that those games continue to flourish today, but the medium itself has proven to be as adept as any at telling one hell of a story.
In most cases, the best game stories don’t simply try to mimic cinema, but use the unique tools at their disposal to engage the player through all sorts of unique interactions along the way.
Cutscenes and well-written dialogue play their part, but it’s often those little details in the environment or gameplay that help build a story for the player; the hacked computer terminals or secret diaries revealing a character’s true intentions, or the difficult moral dilemmas you have to make snap-decisions in,...

Tinseltown took over Music City this past weekend, with the glitzy premiere of the highly anticipated Hank Williams biopic, I Saw the Light. Stars of the big-screen adaptation of the book, Hank Williams: The Biography by Colin Escott, George Merritt and William Macewen, walked the red carpet (which, for the record, was actually green), as invited guests filled the twin theaters at Nashville's historic Belcourt theater. British actor Tom Hiddleston turns in a career-defining role as the troubled singer-songwriter, whose influence is seen not only in nearly every country artist who came after him,...

The light before a good sunset in Tennessee changes from fiery pink to a flood of gold until the sky eventually turns a dark enough purple to be lit by a falling star — just as Hank Williams wrote it. In September of 2014, the summer heat had eased up enough to enjoy the outdoors at dusk and those same colors began to fill the sky as Tom Hiddleston was finishing a run along the hillsides south of Nashville. In under 40 days, filming for the Hank Williams biopic I Saw the Light would begin in Shreveport,...

Sixteen characters – that’s all we’re getting when Street Fighter V is unleashed in the Spring of 2016. Despite the fact that Street Fighter IV’s initial roster numbered seventeen, that mid-teens number sounds quite small when you consider the vast array of characters that exist within the series’ universe at this point.
Luckily though, Capcom’s obviously thinking the exact same thing, and intends to support the fifth iteration of the iconic series long after launch day with Dlc. But hold off with the groans that follow whenever you see those three letters! Long gone are the days of the awful on-disc Dlc that Capcom have been criticised for in the past – with Street Fighter V, the developer is giving players the option to unlock every single additional character with money earned in-game. I know, it’s a miracle.

In an outspoken interview, Erik Engelen, former director of acquisitions at Benelux distribution outfit A-Film (and still a consultant there), has given his views on what has brought one of the region’s most respected independent companies to its knees.
“The essence of the failure of A-Film lies in its past,” Engelen said. “I don’t want to make it into a mudfight between us (the current management) and the previous management but what people sometimes forget is that when the current shareholders took over the company eight or nine years ago, there was already at that point a serious deficit.”
One point that Engelen made forcefully is that A-Film did not benefit nearly as much from its release of the Lord Of The Rings trilogy as had commonly been presumed.
Commenting on how the deal for the Peter Jackson trilogy was structured, Engelen said: “Lord Of The Rings was an amazing success all over the world...

Today, Newcastle United broadcast their training session using the internet video platform ‘Periscope’ live from their Benton training base. Long gone are the days where you could enjoy doing your stretches, exercises and team bonding free from the public eye and nowadays a seemingly unimportant wander to the training field can be analysed by thousands of fans (and website media platforms).
Fitness coach, Alessandro Scoenmaker took the session (for the 30 minutes that was shown) while Steve McClaren watched from afar as the players did some simple warm-ups, shuttle runs and non-ball-related training drills. The fitness guru who the Magpies’ boss worked with at Fc Twente certainly had the attention of the squad and was authoritative, concise and personable as he delegated his tasks to the team.

Hong Kong, 2015
In recent years the Chinese and Hong Kong film scene has grown exponentially more important with respect its movie output and the lucrative potential that has Hollywood studios salivating, chasing cross-national picture deals which secure distribution rights on the island and mainland. As American, big budget productions have found ways to co-produce projects with the Chinese producers and film on their soil, so too have Chinese and Hong Kong production companies upped their game in an attempt to showcase their own blockbuster inclinations. Zhong Kui: Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal, is another in a long line of Chinese fantasy action movies that offer spectacle and a sweeping story that attempts to rival the best that Hollywood has to offer.

Famous for being the largest genre film festival in North America, Fantasia is packed with Canadian, North American and worldwide feature-length premieres as well as shorts. This year’s line-up included 22 World Premieres, 13 International Premieres, and 21 North American Premieres including Marvel’s Ant-Man, the animated Miss Hokusai and the much-anticipated Attack on Titan. Chunk returns to The Goondocks! Jeff B. Cohen -- who played the Truffle Shuffler in "The Goonies" -- went back to where it all started over the weekend, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the classic 1985 family flick in Astoria, Oregon. The former child star joined fans at the annual Goonies Day event, held where the film was actually shot three decades ago. And while it was a real treat to have Chunk in attendance, some fans may not have spotted him -- because he looks Nothing like he used to. Long gone are his curly locks and his character's trademark belly, proving how much 30 years (or puberty) can do to a person. Not only is he a lean machine these days, but Cohen has also put his acting career behind him -- and is now an entertainment lawyer who just released a book about negotiating deals in Hollywood. Not too shabby!

One of the marketing trends today is for consumers to take a brand and make it their own. An example is the phenomenon of customizing phones. I’m sure that just about everyone you know has selected a cellphone case so that their phone has really become their phone. And a few years ago, I had a role in a Kia Soul marketing campaign. The big idea was that you, as a car owner, could customize the Soul in whatever way worked best for you. And there’s more of this brand customization in the future. Centennials, the group that comes after Millennials, are even more passionate about personalizing brands.
Geek Culture’s passionate fans already have their own personalized visions of popular entertainment brands and characters. They are a finicky bunch, especially when it comes to change. Long gone are the days when they blindly accepted reboots or revisions...

San Andreas

San Andreas is like an intimate family barbeque that suddenly breaks out the bottle rockets and boom boxes. Director Brad Peyton has a full suite of computer-generated fireworks to light off, but it’s just the same stale show that we get every year. Even the reliably-watchable Dwayne Johnson can’t save a script riddled with missteps and half-starts. Ultimately, San Andreas is less a disaster than a dud.
Long gone are the glory days of disaster films, when star-studded spectaculars made you wonder who would live and who would sink to the bottom of the sea. Now, disaster films are little more than special-effects extravaganzas anchored by one man’s drive for personal redemption. Even worse are the made-for-television monstrosities that are too busy winking at the camera to notice the cheesy action that surrounds them. Theatrical disasters...

The WWE’s PG-era has been criticised for many things. The pure in-ring quality of the wrestlers may have increased over time, but wrestling is about so much more than simply what goes on between the ropes. Weak storylines, bland characters, poor booking; areas which were all unquestionable strengths of the company during the 1990s and early 2000s have fallen so far in the past decade or so – and the standard of promos is no exception.
Promos are one of the most important hallmarks of the wrestling world; even non-fans will conjure the image of a larger-than-life musclebound figure screaming “lemme tell ya somethin’!’ into a microphone when asked to describe a cliche of the business. These days, however, the art of a good WWE promo has been diluted by an overreliance upon scriptwriters, part of Vince McMahon’s desire to transform wrestling into an overly sleek, episodic product.

With not a week going by without some ancient totem of lad culture being consigned to the scrap heap, a surface-level inspection of the video game world would also suggest that, yes, some dark days are behind it.
Long gone is the age of creepy Japanese molestation games and hacking consoles to see Lara Croft’s pixelalted rump, while Princess Peach has even rescued Mario once or twice herself now. It’s no coincidence either that numbers of female gamers are as high as they’ve ever been at a time when the gaming world finally appears to be treating its heroines with a degree of respect.
But for every strong and empowering female lead in a game, there’s still a number of lazy and two-dimensional portrayals of the fairer sex lurking around somewhere. Be they total fodder in the background, or a garish and offensive portrayal designed...
