Case 39
Opens: January 1st 2010
Cast: Renée Zellweger, Jodelle Ferland, Ian McShane, Bradley Cooper, Kerry O'Malley
Director: Christian Alvart
Summary: A family services social worker thinks she has seen it all until she meets her newest, most mysterious case - a troubled 10-year old girl whose parents try to kill her. The social worker decides to take her in herself until the right foster family comes along.
Analysis: Despite the presence of promising German director Christian Alvart ("Pandorum"), 'Case' has sat on a shelf since late 2006 and is finally being quietly shuffled out this year for one very good reason - it stinks. Having opened in Australia a few months back, reviewers utterly savaged the film as both incredibly dumb and utterly ludicrous. Lead star Renee Zellweger also scored personal criticism to a level rarely seen in film reviews outside of comments about Nicole Kidman's 'more alien than the

Week in Geek: Kenneth Branagh's Thor is coming together

From Anthony Hopkins to Natalie Portman, Thor is picking up steam with a raft of castings, but how closely will the film stick to Stan Lee's 1962 comic?
Kenneth Branagh is a lucky man. Unlike the unfortunate director who will, eventually, be tasked with reviving the fortunes of Superman, Branagh is bringing to the big screen a superhero (Thor) with no movie precedent. The closest thing to the son of Odin who's popped up on film so far has been the hunky car mechanic who slightly resembled him in Chris Columbus's trashy 1987 comedy Adventures in Babysitting.
And Branagh seems to be making all the right moves. He's avoided reported studio pressure to cast a famous face – Josh Hartnett was said to be in the running – and instead plumped for the little-known Chris Hemsworth, who was Captain Kirk's dad in Star Trek for about five minutes. As everyone who saw Daredevil knows,

Must Watch: Impressive New Trailer for Fox's Percy Jackson

Fox has quietly debuted yet another new trailer for Percy Jackson & the Olympians, making this the third trailer we've seen for this movie so far. Up until this point, we haven't really known what this would be like, what would happen in it and what the story would be. But this trailer finally gives us a glimpse of all that and I've got to say I'm a little more than curious now. In fact, I'm actually very impressed, this looks great, I'm totally in. The effects look good, even though they're probably far from being done, and the story looks pretty entertaining. My only complaint is that this means we'll see two different Medusa's next year!

Tina Fey and Steve Carell's 'Date Night' trailer has more gunshots, car crashes than expected

When we started hearing about the new Steve Carell-Tina Fey comedy Date Night earlier this year, I kind of pictured a witty, domestic comedy of errors. Articles described the movie as a romcom about a couple whose night out goes laughably awry, so I immediately pictured something like a mix of Baby Mama and Dan in Real Life, with maybe a dash of Adventures in Babysitting from the parents Pov.
Boy, was I wrong.
Judging by the movie's just-leaked trailer, Date Night (coming in April) is as much an action pic as a comedy — like an earth-bound Mom and Dad Save the World,

Elisabeth Shue Talks New Movie "Piranha 3-D"

Elisabeth Shue , best known for her Oscar-nominated turn in "Leaving Las Vegas" as well as her roles in hits like the "Back to the Future" sequels and "Adventures in Babysitting," has recently starred in more independent fare like "Hamlet 2," where she played a parody of herself and "Gracie," which she helped produce.
But next year, Shue will hit the big screen in "Piranha 3-D," a horror comedy which lifts the name and fish from the 1980's cult classic, but with a brand new story. Shue plays Sheriff Julie Forester, who has to fight off flesh-eating piranhas when an underwater tremor unleashes them into a tourist-filled lake.
Shooting took place in Arizona's Lake Havasu during the summer's record temperatures. "It was really fun, although the heat. I say fun, but ha!" Shue said, on a break from participating in the yearly charity event the Chris Evert Pro-Celebrity Tennis Classic.

Cinematical has just received this exclusive poster for The Spy Next Door, starring everyone's favorite martial arts maniac Jackie Chan as a secret agent undercover and acting like a mild-mannered guy who, while babysitting his neighbor's kids, winds up having to fight off secret agents after one of the kids inadvertently downloads some secret code. Don't you hate it when that happens? You meant to download the latest episode of The Office on Hulu when all of a sudden you end up accidentally hacking into the Pentagon? Oh internet, you so crazy.
Also starring in this War Games meets Spy Kids meets Adventures in Babysitting-type action-comedy are Billy Ray Cyrus and George Lopez, and Brian Levant (Jingle All the Way, Snow Dogs, Are We There Yet?) is the man behind the camera. As an added bonus, Moviefone just premiered the trailer for

Chris Columbus was responsible for a lot of the movies I loved when I was a kid. Dude wrote Gremlins and Goonies, directed Adventures In Babysitting and Home Alone. Somewhere along the way though (Bicentennial Man?), the wheels fell off and things haven't been the same since. I mean I Love You, Beth Cooper should've been vintage Chris Columbus but it was an absolute train wreck. I guess here's hoping for the kids of this generation that they get to experience some vintage Columbus with

Disney Won’t Not Celebrate Opposite Day

Ready to have some fun and a headache? If it actually was opposite day, this news story would read as follows:
Oren Aviv, who is not the studio production president at Disney, is terrible at coming up with fun story ideas for Disney to exploit. He didn't conceptualize National Treasure, a film I totally couldn't stand, and definitely did not see in theaters upwards of 4 times. The basic conceptual idea for Opposite Day -- a movie not about a day wherein someone has to do the opposite of their normal daily routine -- hasn't been popular in Hollywood's recent past, and definitely not in movies like Sliding Doors and The Family Man.
Disney will not employ Nancy Drew writer Tiffany Paulsen for the Opposite Day project. Paulsen is not also attached to a project that will not be a reboot of the Adventures in Babysitting franchise. That film will definitely not be called Further Adventures in Babysitting

Second Full Teaser for Fox's Percy Jackson & the Olympians

A second longer teaser trailer for Fox's Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief has arrived. It apparently was found on the Wolverine DVD and it's the teaser they should've played in front of Harry Potter. If you remember back during the summer, this first teaser trailer was attached to Half-Blood Prince, and because it was so Potter-like and vague, it left audiences confused, especially because not that many people are familiar with this series of books. However, I'll admit that I'm now much more curious, enough to call it worth watching. I'm not a fan of director Chris Columbus, but this looks like it'll be fun?

"This is like an adolescent version of The Passion of the Christ" - Paul Rust, 2008
I Love You, Beth Cooper. Page 89. Earlier in the day, class valedictorian Dennis Cooverman emphatically proclaimed his love for Beth Cooper in the middle of his graduation commencement speech. Though she doesn't know it yet, she is the love of his young life. Sweet, yet almost too pretty for the room, Beth accepts these words and agrees to meet Dennis at his graduation after-party. It is now 10 pm that night. After waiting for what seemed like an eternity, Beth has finally arrived at Dennis' house with her two friends Treece and Cammy. They are known as the Trinity, and neither Dennis nor his pal Rich, can believe they are actually here, hanging out with them.
After one little mishap with a champagne bottle that sees the cork nailing Dennis in the eye, the party actually picks up,

Those paparazzi are at it again (see their last round here), and this time it's TMZ (via INFDaily) dropping in on the Arizona set of Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes)'s remake of Piranha.
The tabloid site/show/rag snagged a pic of Elisabeth Shue (Adventures In Babysitting, Hollow Man) looking like she's been on the Linda Hamilton/Sarah Connor training program.

Like Charles Foster Kane, Gordon Gekko, and Victor Mancini before him, Fsr's regular DVD columnist Brian Gibson has seen the limits of excess... and he has paid the price. Years of snorting DVDs, mainlining Blu-ray discs, and fornicating with pop culture figurines in back alleys has finally caught up with him. He's currently in entertainment rehab and debt counseling, and even worse, his mother has cut up his credit cards and cut off his allowance. Dark times indeed. We wish him a successful and speedy recovery, and in his absence, please allow me to share my DVD recommendations with you this week. (And yes, I always pay cash.)

Elisabeth Shue Confirmed For 'Piranha 3D' Remake

The boys over at Moviehole.net confirmed tonight that Elisabeth Sue will in fact be starring in Alex Aja's Piranha 3D, Dimension Films' remake of Joe Dante's classic from 1978.
"Shue is playing the role of Sherrif Julie Forester, a take-charge authority figure in the community of Lake Victoria - where the action/ankle-biting takes place," the site reports. "She's the mother of Jake (one of the central characters in the film - the shy teenager who gets to prove his worth when human-eating fish threaten his family and friends), Laura and Zane."
Shue started her career as the sexy "girl next door" in classic 80's films such as The Karate Kid, Adventures In Babysitting and Back To The Future 2 -- and now I get to see her in 3-D. Sweet.

A pretty interesting rumor just hit the web as it's being reported that the beautiful Elisabeth Shue - one of my favorite 80's chicks (Adventures In Babysitting, The Karate Kid, Back To The Future II, Cocktail) - is "a likely candidate" to star in Dimension Films' Piranha 3D, their reboot of Joe Dante's classic film from 1978 being helmed by genre fav Alex Aja (Mirrors, Haute Tension, The Hills Have Eyes).
This is by no means "official" and should be taken strictly as rumor right now.
Aiming for release on March 19, 2010 from Dimension Films, Aja's version takes us to Lake Havasu, Arizona, where a tremor causes the lake's floor to open, setting free scores of prehistoric piranhas

Fox Atomic Picks Up The Sitter

Fox Atomic has picked up The Sitter, a spec script from writers Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka.Little is known about the actual plot, but we’re guessing that it’s probably fairly easy to guess, given that it’s been described as a cross between Chris Columbus’ Adventures In Babysitting and Greg Mottola's Superbad. So expect raucousness, tinged with giddy innocence and, somewhere in there, an extraordinarily hot babysitter. The script was hot enough to have sparked a bidding war between Fox Atomic, Paramount and Paramount Vantage, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura attached to one of those bids. But Michael De Luca will produce for Fox Atomic. And, um, that’s it. Nothing else to see here, really. But we’ve got some space to fill, so… what are you up to this weekend? Anything good? No? Ok. You can go now.
