500 Days of Summer shines on Blu-ray and after a week on the shelves I have finally found time to get my review up on the site. Thank you to those nice folks at Fox for passing it too me; I now honor you with my positive words of reflection on one of my favorite films of the year on glorious HD.
With its touted 2.40:1 framed, 1080p/Avc-encoded transfer (I read that on the package), it’s impossible not to fall for the beautiful cuteness of the film’s star Zoe Deschanel. Marc Webb’s gorgeously shot film has a vibrant color palette that captures that indie style but with a scope and intrigue usually reserved for something with a larger budget. Finally the boasted 50Gb dual-layer disc has no noticeable compression issues or other anomalies to ruin the mood and tone of the film.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment presents the critically acclaimed, offbeat romance that proves when it comes to love some people know nothing at all as (500) Days of Summer arrives on Blu-ray Disc (Bd) and DVD December 22. Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt star in this quirky romantic comedy about love and fate, as a young greeting card writer (Gordon-Levitt) who is hopelessly, helplessly searching for the girl of his dreams... and his new co-worker, Summer Finn (Deschanel), may just be "the one." But the 500 days of their offbeat relationship reveal (in no particular order) that the road to happiness can be unpredictable,

500 Days of Summer is one of those rare feats of filmic creation that can be described as both a romantic comedy and as very cool. Now don’t get us wrong, we enjoy the feel-good aspects of the rom-com formula as much as the next guy, but it’s a lot of fun when an off-beat and unusual example of the genre comes along and surprises us all. This indie-flick, told from the point of view of the love-sick guy for a change, does just that and gives us some young, quirky and independent characters to empathise with, namely gentle dreamer Tom Hansen (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and free-loving Summer Finn (played by Zooey Deschanel). And in keeping with the lead male’s romantic, artistic and nostalgic worldview he’s a big fan of the classic British indie rockers of old, giving us our inspired fashion fix of the week,

Weekend Rental: Alex Cox's Sid and Nancy

- It's odd that one of the first sequences in (500) Days of Summer (just released yesterday) will haphazardly remind some of the famous When Harry Meet Sally diner sequence and it also happens to contain a Sid & Nancy reference - not the movie, but the maladjusted couple. It acts as a possible foreshadowing of things to come in this rom com and it is one among many references to film history (we find The Graduate, Bergman, French New Wave, Disney and Han Solo). Zooey and Joseph got together with helmer Marc Webb for a piece of viral of self-promotion for 500 Days, which reminds us of a film worth pointing to in our Weekend Rental suggestion. The 1986 film was directed by Alex Cox,lensed by Roger Deakins and featured Gary Oldman in the role of Sid Vicious. See NYTimes review after the jump.
Few would have suspected, when Sid Vicious died
