Tarzan is returning to the Big Screen but not as an animated musical sequel from Disney but a played-for-straight adventure from Warner Bros, and director Stephen Sommers (The Mummy). Variety reports this morning that Sommers and Stuart Beattie will be co-writing the screenplay. The duo last worked together on 2009’s G.I. Joe film for Paramount, which recently completed lensing.

Producer Jerry Weintraub has been trying to mount a new live-action version of Tarzan since 2003, working from a screenplay by John August (Shazam!) and at one point Guillermo del Toro was in talks to direct the film.

Ever since Edgar Rice Burroughs first wrote about his man raised by the apes in 1912, it has been repeatedly interpreted for serials, movies, radio, television and comic books. This past week I played in a national softball tournament. It was my league's World Series. 4,000 or so athletes descended upon Seattle for five days of competition in six different divisions showcasing players of varying skill levels. Unfortunately, my time out on the field was cut incredibly short, my hamstring partially tearing during the fourth inning of our very first game left me both unbelievably ticked off as well as in an almost indescribable amount of pain. What does this have to do with the new Blu-ray release of Universal Pictures' The Scorpion King: Rise of a Warrior? Nothing, really, other than the fact watching this movie left me in even more pain than tearing my hamstring did. This movie isn't just bad, it's a torture test, and anyone that can make it from start to finish without wanting to shoot themselves is far more forgiving and even-tempered than I.

Back in May, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Summit Entertainment is bringing Highlander back to the big screen.  The 1986 sci-fi cult hit starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown as immortal beings who battled humans and each other. Lambert played Scottish swordsman Connor MacLeod, Connery portrayed the memorable Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez and Clancy was a barbarian known as the Kurgan. The film with the “There can be only one” tagline spawned four sequels and three television series. One of the few '80s remakes I can get behind is Highlander -- the original is something I always wanted to love, but couldn't. I know! It seems tailor made for me, what with Scotsmen, swords, immortals, and finest power ballads known to humankind. But there are levels of ridiculousness I will accept in film, and somehow Highlander just overruns my tolerance for it when a "Spanish" Sean Connery disdains haggis while speaking in a warm Scottish brogue. A remake has always topped my guilty wish list, and it shocks me that Summit went and green-lit it.

But news has been pretty scarce -- so scarce that the moment I saw this rumor on JoBlo, I took it. It seems one of their faithful readers heard Scottish actor Kevin McKidd on a Dublin radio show, and he mentioned that
