- [Cindy has just completed the ladder climb to the tower & reached the bottom in under the allotted time. Capt. Bukowski shows the results to Chief Thompson]
- B.C. Thompson: [addressing the recruits] As you all know, candidates who fail any part of the agility test are dismissed for the rest of the day's proceedings. Captain Bukowski will give you the results in a minute. But today, we're going to bend the rules a little bit. I wanted you all to be around & share in this moment. In Los Angeles County Fire Department's 60-year history, no woman has ever passed the agility test...
- [Long silence, then a smile spreads across the Chief's face]
- B.C. Thompson: ...until today!
- [the recruits and Cindy break out in cheers as the chief & Capt. Bukowski shake Cindy's hand]
- [Cindy's group of recruits are in full turnout gear, standing in front of the 'Burn House', a structure with thick smoke coming from the windows, used to train firefighters in search & rescue methods during a structure fire]
- Capt. Bukowski: You recruits will now experience, without benefit of breathing apparatus, the full impact of inhaling smoke. Your mission is to locate and rescue the victims. The mannequins are 150 pounds of dead weight so watch your backs! Go get 'em, people.
- [the recruits split into 2 groups; 4 firefighters enter the ground level while the other 6, including Cindy, go up the stairs to the 2nd floor where they meet a choking cloud of thick gray smoke]
