Collider Goes to Dinner With Mike Judge

21 December 2009 8:20 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

There are two sides to Mike Judge in Hollywood. There’s the TV star, who took a ton of heat but came out as one of the most daring and biting voices of satire in the 1990’s with Beavis and Butthead, and the successful maistream animator with a thirteen season run of the folksy and engaging King of the Hill. Then there’s the film director, who was cajoled into the theatrical Beavis and Butthead Do America, but has worked in live action ever since. He made two films for 20th Century Fox to see them abandoned theatrically, only for both 1999’s Office Space and 2006’s Idiocracy to now be regaled as cult classics. His most recent film, 2009’s Extract did not set the film world afire (Extract is now available on DVD and Blu-ray), but it showed a less biting Judge doing what he does best: everyday life comedy. »

Exclusive Interview with Dexter Director Keith Gordon

28 November 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

About two years ago, this Shock writer was able to conduct a career spanning interview with actor-turned-director Keith Gordon over on Icons Of Fright. (Check that out right here .) Genre fans of course recognize him in front of the camera for his performances in Jaws 2 , John Carpenter's Christine and Brian DePalma's Dressed To Kill , as well as the Rodney Dangerfield comedy Back To School . He eventually made the shift over to directing with dramas such as The Midnight Clear and Waking The Dead , but when we initially spoke, he was just tackling episodes from Showtime's second season of Dexter . Now, he's directed episodes in every season and with "Lost Boys", the 10th episode of Dexter season four debuting this Sunday, we thought this was the ideal time »

DVD Playhouse—November 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

Josh Wolk's Pop Culture Club talks 'Community': What if a hilarious sitcom gets less funny, but is still funnier than most sitcoms?

15 October 2009 7:45 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

This week’s assignment was the new NBC comedy, Community. A comedy, I might add, that was my top pick for new shows this season. I loved the pilot and watched it a few times: it felt like a little movie to me, but one that – oh lucky day! – would go on and on every week. I loved Joel McHale’s smarmy persona, and thought it was the perfect 21st-century reincarnation of the ‘80s Bill Murray archetype. With the strong supporting characters (Human robot Abed, giggly Shirley, and Chevy Chase’s obliviously un-pc Pierce) and a tight, bouncy script, the »

Box-Office Wrap-Up: Sep. 11 - Sep. 13, 2009

13 September 2009 11:30 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I will take the victory, but I was clearly way off. It was all sadness at the box office this weekend. Let's break it down! #1 movie predicted correctly: 1 Week In A Row 1. Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself This film couldn't match Madea Goes to Jail - you guys were right, I was way over. Interestingly enough the reason might have been the Madea factor. The character was in the movie, but not featured in the title, and that's the only theory I've got to why this film couldn't crack $25m. Result: 24.0 million (My rank: #1, $9.8m off) 2. 9 Good for 9. It's not a film I was particularly interested in, but cheering for it over Sorority Row and Whiteout isn't a tough call. No budget has been reported yet, but the film has made $16m so far (worldwide cume). Result: 10.8 million (My rank: #, $m off) 3. Inglourious Basterds Crossed $100m domestically this weekend, »

Back to School Record Review Roundup

12 September 2009 10:06 PM, PDT | www.culturecatch.com | See recent CultureCatch news »

Before I get to the reviews, it’s worth noting that the song I have listened to obsessively over the past few weeks is not new, not reissued: it’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Five minutes of musical perfection, and not just because Paul Simon wrote a great song and Art Garfunkel sang it divinely. The third irreplaceable ingredient is session pianist Larry Knechtel, who is just as prominent as Garfunkel; Knechtel shared the 1970 Grammy Award for “Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s)” for his work on this song. Best known as a member of '70s soft-rock icons Bread, he played on hundreds of storied sessions, but none surpassed “Bridge Over Troubled Water” for impact or beauty.

Steal That Style: Back to School (Mini!) Backpacks

2 September 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | People - CelebrityBabies | See recent People - CelebrityBabies news »

There is nothing like helping (or watching!) your little one pack their backpack for the first day of school. In goes brand-new pencils, crayons, and any other little odds and ends they feel they will need once they cross through the big double doors on their own. While stocking the pack and setting it by the front door is an exciting step as it leads them that much closer to starting school, parents first must begin their quest for the perfect backpack suitable for their toddler.

For younger kids brand new to the schoolyard, the standard sized backpacks are often much more than a toddler can handle. Fortunately, the smaller sized line of mini backpacks are becoming increasingly popular for the preschool crowd with several companies expanding their options and designs to create a nice blend of trendy and practicality. Most mini backpacks boast large, easy-to-grip zippers, spacious pockets, and »

Introducing Guest Blogger Paula Wallace: Taking Us Back to School in Style

31 August 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news »

Savannah, Georgia, with its blocks of crepe myrtles dripping lazily with Spanish moss, is probably the last place you'd expect to find a bubbling hub of design innovation. But one visit to shopSCAD, the boutique that sells the work by students at the Savannah College of Art and Design will change all that. Step inside and you'll quickly realize this is not some student shop--this is a world-class design store. The work is so smart, so sophisticated, so jaw-droppingly good, that it's not surprising to hear that these same students also sell their work at Williams-Sonoma and Barnes & Noble. As the co-founder and current president of Scad, it's Paula Wallace who you can thank for making Savannah a design exporter, a craft Mecca, an artists' haven, a true center of creativity that's simply unheard of for a city its size.

It's no surprise that President Wallace has built a world-class »

The Reject Report Heads to The Final Destination

28 August 2009 5:29 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Halloween has agaiin come early to the Reject Report, as this weekend is sure to be a gory one at the box office. Two absolutely frightening movies, both loaded with death, do battle in this weekend's box office duel to the death: Halloween II and The Final Destination. Oh, and for you Aquarius-type people there's Taking Woodstock. But that movie is really serving as counter-programming, as this truly is the box office weekend of death. First, I'll talk about Taking Woodstock which actually opened on Wednesday in a couple of theaters and goes into 1,300 this weekend. This movie is based on the true story of how the famous '69 Woodstock concert, well, came to be. It's directed by Oscar-winner Ang Lee. According to the writeup at IMDb, "a man working at his parents' motel in the Catskills inadvertently sets in motion the generation-defining concert in the summer of 1969." Even in the midst of a messy divorce, life goes on. And it went on today for the older Gosselin children, who started school once more. Thursday morning saw Jon and Kate Gosselin at the bus drop-off spot at the same time...without the world exploding. Perhaps things are finally going to start simmering down between those two. But we won't hold our breaths.Of twins Kara and Mady's (nine) reaction to starting school again Jon Gosselin said, "They're all jazzed up about riding on the bus. I'm happy too, because now I don't have to drive them to school." And not driving those girls to school means more time for Jon to be out in the world acting »
