Exclusive Interview: Producer Dan Lin on Sherlock Holmes; Plus he Addresses the Brad Pitt Rumors

23 December 2009 10:12 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

With Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes about to get released, it’s time for the final segment of “7 Days with Producer Dan Lin”.  Over the past week we’ve covered all the various projects Lin is developing like the Lego movie and Gangster Squad, his thoughts on the Terminator Salvation ending and what’s up with future movies, what’s up with Bone and Tom and Jerry,  and yesterday was  about the Justice League movie, Suicide Squad, and Stephen King’s It.  But for tonight’s article, we finally get to the reason I got to speak with him in the first place: Sherlock Holmes.

As I have said many times, I loved the film.  It’s got a great script. Fantastic performances from everyone involved.  Amazing chemistry between Jude Law and Downey Jr.. A third act that doesn’t suck.  Action scenes that sell why Sherlock Holmes is Sherlock Holmes. »

Blu-Ray Review: Remarkable 20th Anniversary Edition of ‘Say Anything...’

29 November 2009 2:04 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Sometimes fans have the choice between holding on to the standard DVD version of their favorite films or upgrading to the latest format, anniversary, or ultimate collector’s unrated fantastic edition. With many Blu-Ray releases merely improving the technical specs but often leaving the special features alone, it can be a tough call. Such is not the case with the 20th anniversary edition of the great “Say Anything…,” a release packed with excellent bonus material that make it a must-own for fans of Cameron Crowe’s directorial debut.

Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0

After breaking through with his script for “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” Cameron Crowe fell into the worst project of his career, a lackluster ’80s teen movie called “The Wild Life”. After that experience, Crowe told himself that he wanted to write something personal and real; a film that took the lives of young people seriously and not merely »

2nd Joel Silver Interview Ninja Assassin. Plus Info on Dark Castle Projects, Remakes, Sherlock Holmes, More

24 November 2009 8:49 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

At last weekend’s press junket for Ninja Assassin, I had the opportunity to speak with producer Joel Silver twice.  The first time was an exclusive TV interview, and the second time was during a roundtable interview the following day.  While I normally would be happy to use just one of the interviews, since Joel Silver is producing so many high profile projects (Lobo, Sgt. Rock, The Apparition), I knew getting to speak with him twice would be a good thing.

Also, what a lot of people don’t realize is how much info a producer can tell you.  While it’s always great to talk with an actor, unless you’re a Brad Pitt, most actors don’t have that much juice to get a project made.  So that’s why getting to speak with Joel Silver is so great, because not only can he talk about all his projects that are getting made, »

Hall Ordered To Keep Away From Ex

17 November 2009 1:56 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

The Breakfast Club star Anthony Michael Hall has been ordered to stay away from his ex-girlfriend after he allegedly attacked her in her New York home.

Diana Falzone filed papers against the Brat Pack actor last Tuesday alleging he attempted to kick down her apartment door.

His former partner alleges when she finally let him in, he slammed her head against a wall, according to documents obtained by New York post gossip column PageSix.

Falzone was granted a temporary restraining order against the star on Thursday.

Hall, 41, has been ordered to "refrain from assault, stalking, harassment... menacing, reckless endangerment... intimidation" against Falzone, who he dated for a year.

The Weird Science actor is expected to attend a court hearing in Manhattan next week (begs23Nov09).

A representative for Hall has slammed Falzone's claims, telling PageSix, "All of the allegations are erroneous and will be addressed accordingly." »

Lost – The John Hughes Edition?

31 October 2009 6:05 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Is Lost planning an homage to John Hughes?  The ever vigilant Ryan from TheTransmission passed on some details regarding a day of shooting that, among other things, suggested: Mario Van Pebbles onset as a guest director or producer; fan favorites Locke and Ben possibly taking on the role of substitute teachers; second stringers Alex Rousseau and Leslie Arzt; and, Ryan has exclusively revealed to us the identity of a certain William Atherton's character.  Anyway you slice the scoops, one thing is clear:  this episode of Lost is high-school centric.

Atherton's appearance on Lost was first revealed through some teasing tweets from Lost executive producer Carlton Cuse, and we now know he will be playing the part of Principal Reynolds.   Tell me this guy wasn't born to play a bad ass principal.  Arzt, as you will recall, was a junior high science teacher so it appears we will see him back in his role, »

'The Crow' Remembered: All This Week On MTV Splash Page

29 October 2009 9:30 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

From Splash Page: Our five-part Halloween Week retrospective on "The Crow" continues, celebrating the film's 15th anniversary with cast and filmmaker interviews that explore its origin and legacy. Check back each day this week for another installment of our "15 Years Of Devil's Night" series.

Part Three: The Skull Cowboy Speaks! The Crow'S Lost Character.

By Ryan J. Downey

The Skull Cowboy appears in James O'Barr's comics and nearly made it into "The Crow." An other-worldly guide for Brandon Lee's resurrected avenger Eric Draven, the mysterious figure would have provided a great deal of the film's exposition, setting up the "rules" of the afterlife and Draven's mission.

The character, portrayed under heavy prosthetics by actor Michael Berryman ("The Devil's Rejects," "Weird Science," "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest"), can be glimpsed in a deleted footage montage on the collector's edition DVD of "The Crow" and longer scenes, including one with dialogue, »

Next 'Vacation' Movie to Focus on Rusty Griswold

7 October 2009 8:30 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Warner Bros. is passing the torch of its "National Lampoon's Vacation" franchise to subsidiary New Line Cinema, which is appropriate since the series itself is making a similar generational transition. According to The Hollywood Reporter, following four installments focused on Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) and family during different vacations -- plus one spin-off involving a holiday taken by the motley clan of Cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid) -- the franchise has been inherited by Clark's son Rusty, who now has a family of his own.

Rusty Griswold has been played by four different actors throughout the series' run. Anthony Michael Hall was the first to play the son, appropriate since the original film was scripted and based on a short story by the late John Hughes, who went on to turn the kid into a star with roles in "Sixteen Candles," "Weird Science" and "The Breakfast Club."

Hughes also wrote the first two sequels, »

The world's only Bill Paxton pinball machine

29 September 2009 11:18 PM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

I spend a lot of time every day connected to the internet and I see many things. Very few of them come as close to being as incredibly geeky and super-cool as what Benjamin J. Heckendorn is making in his off-time: the world's only and fully working pinball machine meant to honor the film career of Bill Paxton. Twister. Aliens. True Lies. Frailty. The Dark Backward. Weird Science. The Terminator. The man is worthy -- nay, Owed -- a pinball machine to his geek greatness.

Heckendorn has been working on his custom pinball machine since 2005; he is considered an expert game modder and so has a bunch of other projects on the go at any given time but now Heckendorn hopes to have his Bpp game ready for playing next year. Based on the photos and videos he's showing us, the dream will be realized on time.

Our Favorite Montages: Real Genius

17 September 2009 6:45 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Of the "nerdy science kid" movies of the 1980s, I've always preferred Real Genius over Weird Science, and it has everything to do with young Val Kilmer. Not because he was godlike in his looks, but because he was hilarious in his bunny slippers. Kilmer is one of those actors you just want to shake senseless because he had it all, and chose to blow off his career in so many ways.

But this isn't a post about Kilmer, it's my favorite Real Genius montage. I abruptly remembered it thanks to being up around Cu-Boulder a few days ago and realizing the fall semester had just started. I haven't been out of school that long, but it's amazing how quickly you forget the hell rush of class registration, book buying, and trying to decide which of your professors you'll be unable to stand. Every year, this montage popped into my »

Blu-Ray Review: The Girl Next Door

12 September 2009 11:35 AM, PDT | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

After several seasons of “24,” I had come to one conclusion – avoid Elisha Cuthbert. There’s nothing personal against her, but after “24” season one, seeing Elisha Cuthbert in a four-screen split on “24” simply meant the possibility of a bad scene. This is nothing personal against Elisha. She played her role well. Unfortunately, the writers decided to pack all the stale melodrama into Cuthbert’s scenes. “The Girl Next Door” stars Elisha Cuthbert as Danielle, a girl who recently moved into the neighborhood, and just happens to be the next big porn star. When Matthew Kidman, the typical high-school outcast, is caught spying on Danielle undress, his life spirals into the unexplored world of adult entertainment. It’s all together humorous adventure. On the surface the plot bears the typical resemblance to “Can’t Buy Me Love” or “Weird Science,” where the nerd dates the pretty girl to gain popularity. But, halfway »

Iconic filmmaker John Hughes died August 6 of a heart attack, and while the tributes to him have not been as plentiful as they were for Michael Jackson, there have still been plenty of stars who have paid tribute to the late director in their work.

The latest comes from over-the-top dance-music duo Lmfao, whose new video for their second single "La La La" is an homage to Hughes' 1985 classic "Weird Science."

The video features Lmfao member Redfoo dreaming up a computer application that creates virtual women, just like the protagonist of "Weird Science." The program then sends the duo into the computer, where they dance with Chelsea Corka from Paradiso Girls and Jonna from "The Real World: Cancun."

John Hughes Remembered: Bill Paxton (Chet from 'Weird Science')

13 August 2009 2:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Bill Paxton: He was quintessentially a Midwestern American in many ways. That voice was, to me, really a voice of the heartland, but it wasn’t like a country bumpkin vibe. He was a guy who came along to show the regionalists were actually pretty urbane. I always saw him as part of that big creative movement that came out of Chicago, with Second City. There was something about the way he was loyal to Chicago. He drew from the well that he’d known, and it was something we could all relate to. It was a real family thing, making Weird Science. I remember [Hughes’ wife] Nancy really well. I remember his two sons around. There’d be coloring books in his bungalow. I tell you the other thing I saw, which was amazing to me: One of great collaborations of a director and an actor was John with Anthony Michael Hall. »

Wilderness: You’ll Want to Go Into this Wild (DVD Review)

12 August 2009 11:36 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

The recent passing of John Hughes has elicited fond memories of his legacy.  Comedies like Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club, Weird Science, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off captured the essence of teen angst.  His characters, awkward and clumsy, were filled with doubts, fears, and desires.

The complex psyches of teens have been explored often in the horror genre as well, but often as a device used in the systematic set-up of a violent and bloody end.  In Battle Royale, for example, the plight of each teen is revealed through flashback only moments before said teen meets brutal demise. In movies like Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Halloween, teens are routinely punished for their promiscuity and rebelliousness; while in the new generation of torture/porn, kids are lured like dogs into unbearable situations.

But the best coming of age stories are born from scripts that borrow from »

Hughes Documentary Set For International Release

12 August 2009 1:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

A low-budget documentary about late writer/director John Hughes is set to hit theatres across the globe.

Don't You Forget About Me tells the story of Hughes' life and was completed before the beloved filmmaker died from a heart attack, aged 59.

Alliance Films of Montreal signed a deal to release the project shortly after his death made headlines on Thursday, reports trade magazine Variety.

Several stars from Hughes' hit movies took part in director Matt Austin-Sadowski's film, including The Breakfast Club stars Ally Sheedy and Judd Nelson, Weird Science's Kelly LeBrock and Pretty In Pink actor Andrew McCarthy.

Austin-Sadowski cites Hughes as one of his greatest influences, and hopes the documentary will inspire a renewed interest in his work.

He says, "He inspired me as a person, going through an awkward adolescence, as many people do. He took affairs of the heart very seriously, and no other director gave teenagers that sort of treatment at that time." »

Details on the John Hughes Film Fest in Tempe, Az

11 August 2009 2:37 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

We told you last Friday about an upcoming John Hughes Film Festival in Tempe, the university-friendly suburb of Phoenix. The Big Picture is proud to partner with Harkins Theaters for this exclusive chance to honor the memory of John Hughes through six of his classic films, which begins this Friday.

When we first broke the news, I thought it would be a couple days, maybe run the full weekend, but Harkins is so committed to the event that for a solid week, the Valley Art is showing nothing but John Hughes movies. Because of its rich history, the 69-year-old theater is one of my absolute favorites, and when it was remodeled a few years ago, they did a tremendous job giving it the modern creature comforts while keeping that link to its history. So it's a perfect place to see these movies.

The schedule is below, but the films you can see beginning this Friday, »

John Hughes Documentary Don't You Forget About Me to Hit Theaters

11 August 2009 5:13 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Matt Austin-Sadowski's documentary Don't You Forget About Me has become the benefactor of unfortunate timing. According to Variety, this look at the life and films of John Hughes has been picked up for distribution by Alliance Films of Montreal in the days following the director's untimely death.

Following Hughes passing, director Austin-Sadowski was asked to be interviewed by CNN. This lead to the film being snapped up by Alliance Films. The documentary follows Hughes' legacy through his work on such seminal teen hits as Sixteen Candles and Weird Science. The seventy-five minute retrospective follows Austin-Sadowski and his producers Kari Hollend, Mike Facciolo and Lenny Panzer as they road trip to Illinois in search of the reclusive Hughes.

About the project, Austin-Sadowski said, "(John Hughes) inspired me as a person, going through an awkward adolescence, as many people do. He took affairs of the heart very seriously, and no other »

After tragedy, John Hughes documentary thrust into the spotlight

The Canadian documentary Don't You Forget About Me has found a distributor at the cost of the life of the movie's subject, John Hughes. This past Friday, the day after the acclaimed director/writer/producer passed away at the age of 59, the doc's director found the world calling.

Matt Austin-Sadowski's phone was ringing off the hook. Reporters wanted to talk to him and find out more about his film which chronicles him and three others taking a road trip to find Hughes in his self-imposed solitude living somewhere around Chicago. With the unexpected passing of the filmmaker, Austin-Sadowski's film and his story were in demand.

"He inspired me as a person, going through an awkward adolescence, as many people do," Austin-Sadowski told Variety when asked why he chose to make his film. "He took affairs of the heart very seriously, and no other director gave teenagers that sort of treatment at that time. »

Sound On Sight Radio #144 - Remembering John Hughes

11 August 2009 12:32 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

There are two things I remember best about early-to-mid-1980s movies: slasher films and teen comedies. While the slasher films bring back fond memories they never quite compare to the quality of the teen angst flicks which made for repeated viewings. Everything from Porky's to the top-notch entertainment of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, the teen flicks of the 80's have never been matched to date. One of the most consistent writer/directors to contribute to the '80s teen fad was John Hughes who in one way or another, was responsible for the likes of Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club and Weird Science. Today on Sound On sight we remember the legend and reflect back on our childhood.
