If ya haven't heard, the flick St. Elmo's Fire is being developed into a television dramedy series. Rob Lowe, who costarred in the movie alongside Demi Moore, Emilio Estevez, Andrew McCarthy and others, says he wasn't aware of the new project until we asked him about it yesterday at the Emmys. But no biggie, because the Brat Pack flick actually isn't Lowe's top choice to be made for the small screen... "Outsiders is the one they should be doing," Lowe said. "The Outsiders was always my favorite, particularly now with the passing of Patrick Swayze." Director Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 movie adaptation of S.E. Hinton's coming-of-age novel of the same name... »

...there were scrapbooks (prev. pt 1)
Let's continue that silly reveal of my "Movies of the Eighties" scrapbook. I'm still hoping to locate the "Movie Stars of the Eighties" companion volume in which I ranked all the actors and actresses of the decade. Wouldn't that be a Rotfl experience? If I can find it I will share, despite the loss of dignity it will surely occasion.
Behold! To your left is the tv guide cover that started it all. I guess it wasn't an actual TV Guide as my personal mythology has always relayed but whatever television magazine thingie was inserted into the Detroit Free Press back in the day. That cover right there started my whole Oscar obsession -- look how worn, damaged and fingered it is. I thumbed through it so many times. What is this naked gold man they call Oscar??? This cover unlocked my latent awards mania. »

Michael J. Fox, better known for his days as Alex Keaton on 'Family Ties' and Marty McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy, starred in a small film in 1985 called Teen Wolf, a film about a high school basketball player who turns into a werewolf during his “transition” through puberty. Nearly 25 years later, MTV has announced that a television series, based on the film, is in the works. Last January, the network announced the project as part of a development slate. After a script was written, MTV asked for a pilot to be produced. With popular shows as 'The Hills' and 'Laguna Beach' gaining most of the network's audiences, MTV's version of 'Teen Wolf' will be “very different from the original” says senior VP Liz Gateley. The series will be set in high school, draw more from the horror genre by exploring werewolf »

A week after we all indulged in some serious reminiscing about the master of 1980s teen angst, John Hughes, Hollywood announced today that it's got more '80s nostalgia up its sleeve: the Brat Pack-flick-to-end-all-Brat Pack flicks, St. Elmo's Fire, is being reworked as a dramedy TV series for ABC. The 1985 original, directed by Joel Schumacher, starred a veritable who's-who of young stars of the Reagan era: Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, and Mare Winningham. They played recent Georgetown University grads figuring out how to be proper yuppies grown-ups. Good idea, or further proof of Hollywood's lack of original thought? Since I suspect the answer to that question will depend largely on casting, let's help out the producers — they include Schumacher and Topher Grace — by throwing some ideas their way, shall we? For now, it's unclear whether Grace will take a role for himself, »

Alphabetically trolling through my admittedly too-massive collection of 80s music last weekend, I came upon a song I hadn't thought about in years: David Foster's St. Elmo's Fire theme. Not the John Parr "Man in Motion" song, but the instrumental ballad. I skipped to the next track, but not before shaking my head at the Brat Pack one more time.
Now, Joel Schumacher and Topher Grace are reviving St. Elmo's Fire for TV, thereby striking when the iron is white hot. It was Schumacher's big break back in 1985, and his career has been such a mixed bag since that when I first saw a trailer for Phantom of the Opera, people in the theater booed when his name came up in the credits. Wish I'd thought of that...
Anyway, ABC will develop the show with Schumacher, Grace, former ABC programming vixen Jamie Tarses, and Dan Bucatisnsky, who will also write the teleplay. »

Welcome to your Friday morning television briefing. ABC has given a script order with a sizable penalty to a contemporary series take on 1985 feature film St. Elmo's Fire. Project, which comes from Sony Pictures Television, will be written/executive produced by Dan Bucatinsky and executive produced by Topher Grace, Jamie Tarses, and Joel Schumacher. The series would revolve around a group of six friends--three men, three women--who hang out together at a Georgetown restaurant called St. Elmo's Bar & Grill. "I feel it is time to re-create Friends in the hourlong genre and feel like this is the perfect opportunity," said Bucatinsky. ""More than anything, the movie evokes a feeling that doesn't go away, the feeling of bonding with your friends who become your surrogate family." ABC is in the work on a dramedy series project based on "St Elmo's Fire," the 1985 movie that launched the filmmaking career of Joel Schumacher (Batman and Robin, 8Mm). The original film was one of the defining movies of the Brat Pack genre. It starred Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy and Mare Winningham as friends who had just graduated from Georgetown University and chronicled their adjustment to adulthood. The series version will use the movie as a takeoff point and as an inspiration as it introduces six new friends: three boys and three girls. What will remain is the setting -- Georgetown and St. Elmo's Bar and Restaurant, now called St. Elmo's Bar and Grill, where the friends hang out. And if the set-up looks a little bit like "Friends," that's Ok with writer Dan Bucatinsky. "I feel it is time to re-create »

St. Elmo's Fire has been reignited - TV bosses have signed a deal to adapt the Brat Pack movie classic into a small screen series.
The original 1985 picture followed the lives of seven pals as they prepared for life after university, and kick-started the careers of Demi Moore, Rob Lowe and Emilio Estevez.
Now, the film is being remade for U.S. TV after executives at America's ABC network agreed a deal to revise the comedy-drama.
The show will focus on the same topics as the film, and will be set in the St. Elmo's Bar & Restaurant, just like the movie.
ABC bosses are hoping the pal-focused plot will fill the gap left by hit sitcom Friends, which ended in 2004 after 10 seasons.
Executive producer Dan Bucatinsky says, "I feel it is time to re-create Friends in the hour-long genre and feel like this is the perfect opportunity."
A group of unknown actors will be cast in the main roles, according to Daily Variety. »

This coming season old eighties hits are all the rage at the broadcast networks, especially ABC. Already slated to start this fall are Eastwick (based on the same novel as the 80s movie) and V on ABC, and another remake of Parenthood for NBC. And now it appears that St. Elmo's Fire, one of the defining Brat Pack movies of the eighties, could be headed to our TV screens.
In reality, the dramedy series project has received a script commitment, and has signed Dan Bucatinsky on to write it. Joel Schumacher, who co-wrote and directed the original movie, is also on board as an executive producer, along with Topher Grace and Jamie Tarses.

As news broke late Thursday that legendary director John Hughes died of a heart attack at the age of 59 in New York, many of the actors who starred in his iconic films reacted to his passing with great sadness.
"I was stunned and incredibly sad to hear about the death of John Hughes," said Molly Ringwald, who starred in the director's '80s teen flicks "Sixteen Candles," "Pretty in Pink" and "The Breakfast Club," in a statement to People. "He was and will always be such an important part of my life.
"He will be missed — by me and by everyone that he has touched," she added. "My heart and all my thoughts are with his family now."

To say that I was obsessed with The Breakfast Club growing up would be an understatement. It's one of five or six movies I've watched more times than any others. I hate watching movies on television (the dubbed over profanity makes my purist self revolt) so I haven't seen it in several years now but it's burned into my brain cells. I was madly in love with Molly Ringwald for two whole years. I obsessed over Ally Sheedy and the simple profundity of "...they ignore me" as chief behavioral, sartorial influence. My best girlfriend and I use to talk about the movie daily, wondering about our future selves...When you grow up, your heart dies. ...and vowing to remember how we felt in high school if we ever looked back on the movie and felt it wasn't totally brilliant and deserving of multiple Oscars.

A very interesting idea has been brought forth by a 1980's-enthusiast-YouTuber: what if Twilight had been made in the 1980's? The question centers on who would be cast for the major characters if the movie were to be made in the 1980's (and, from the looks of the YouTuber's choices, relatively high budget)? For Robert Pattinson's character Edward Cullen, the YouTuber pinned Brat Pack-er Rob Lowe, and, instead of Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan, we'd see Elizabeth Shue. Ralph Macchio would be our Jacob Black, instead of today's Taylor Lautner, according to the video-poster. The full list and video are available here. Though most of the choices derive from The Breakfast Club, St. Elmo's Fire, The Karate Kid, and The Outsiders, it is a fairly interesting discussion, don't you think? If Twilight could have been made in any other g »
