Lionsgate Picks Up 'Solomon Kane'

12 November 2009 9:16 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

The U.S. distribution rights for the film adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s “Solomon Kane” have been acquired by Lionsgate.

According to Fangoria, the rights were picked up at the American Film Market and may lead to “Solomon Kane” having a full theatrical release before coming out on DVD.

The $40 million film was written and directed by Michael J. Bassett and stars James Purefoy as the title character. Bassett’s previous films include “Deathwatch” and “Wilderness” while Purefoy is perhaps best known for his role as Marc Antony on the HBO series, “Rome.” Legendary film actor Max Von Sydow also stars in the movie along with Rachel Hurd-Wood, Pete Postlethwaite and Alice Krige.

Created by Howard in 1928, Solomon Kane is a 16th century Puritan warrior who wanders the world in search of evil monsters to slay. Bassett’s film re-imagines Kane as a mercenary soldier who converts to Puritanism »

'300' FX Team Joins 'Conan'

12 November 2009 7:31 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

As “Conan” gets closer to making his return to the big screen, two of the top FX alumni from Zack Snyder’s “300” adaptation have joined the project.

Shaun Smith has signed on as a creature designer on “Conan” and Scott Wheeler will head up the makeup department. In addition to their time on “300”, Smith created makeup FX for “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” and “The Forbidden Kingdom” while Wheeler has worked extensively on two “Star Trek” movies, “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” and Joss Whedon’s upcoming film “The Cabin in the Woods.”

"As you might expect I really can't say much except it looks really cool and we are excited to be a part of it," Smith related to Mania.com. “Conan” is expected to begin filming in Bulgaria next February.

Fan anticipation for the new “Conan” film has been building since last year when it was announced that there »

Dolph Lundgren ponders role in mythical Conan reboot

10 November 2009 12:20 PM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Dolph Lundgren is cool. I don’t care how many direct-to-dvd movies he does a month, Lundgren is a complete bad-ass. So much of a bad-ass in fact that Lundgren might show up in the highly-rumored Conan reboot.

“I’ve talked to the producers about doing something for Conan,’” Lundgren said. “It’s too early,” he said, stating that he wouldn’t know anything certain until “probably next year.”

The updated Conan will directed by Marcus Nispel for Lionsgate. The reboot is expected to more faithful to Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian than the Arnold Schwarzenegger films were.

Lundgren will be seen in Sylvester Stallone’s action-ensemble pic, The Expendables, where the 52-year-old will play a Swedish sniper named Gunnar Jensen. The film is expected to be released on August 20th.

Conan the Barbarian was released in 1982 from director John Milius. Milius later went to direct Red Dawn. »

‘Men in Black 3′ moves forward with script

30 October 2009 5:57 AM, PDT | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Sony Pictures has tapped Tropic Thunder scribe Etan Cohen to pen the script for the third installment of Men in Black.

Cohen is midway through the first draft of the film. No word on any possible plot points but the script is believed to include aliens, cool gadgets and smart-looking suits with somebody getting slimmed.

Director of the first two Men in Black films, Barry Sonnenfeld, will return to helm the third chapter.

Original stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones have yet to formally sign on to the project. If demands are met and large sacks of cash are quickly exchanged in a dark alley, Men in Black 3 could begin production as early as next spring. Both actors are reportedly waiting to see a finished script.

Let’s be clear. This project has more to do with Will Smith than Tommy Lee Jones. If Smith doesn’t come back to the series, »

Casting Breakdown For ‘Conan’ Remake

28 October 2009 2:22 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

/Film pointed us to a detailed breakdown for the characters in Marcus Nispel’s reboot of Conan The Barbarian, which is scheduled to begin shooting in Bulgaria in February.  Nispel brought us Friday the 13th (2009) and The Very Best of Cher: The Video Hits Collection.  If he can slip the right character into that “If I Could Turn Back Time” outfit, I’ll go see Conan in the theaters 32 times.  However, dress that outfit on the wrong character and who knows how many cities will burn?

IMDb lists Roland Kickinger as being rumored to play the barbarian.  You might remember him from such films as Terminator Salvation (he played the T-800’s body) and Lethal Weapon 4Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, the gentlemen credited with writing Conan, worked together previously penning the scripts for Sahara and Dead of Night.

Without further ado, check out the casting criteria for »

Conan Characters Casting Call

27 October 2009 12:12 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Lionsgate's new Conan starts shooting next February in Bulgaria, with Marcus Nispel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Pathfinder) behind the camera. Moviehole have got their hands on the casting breakdowns, which obviously give a good idea of the characters, and some indication of the plot (beware spoilers). *Deep breath*. Let us tell you of the days of high adventure. For the leads we have, obviously, Conan himself, 20s-30s, Caucasian, the last of the Cimmerians, out for vengeance on Khalar Singh, a formidable warlord and warrior in his 40s or 50s, for whom the producers are "open to all ethnicities". Singh is looking for Queen Ilira, whose blood will help him raise a demon army. Ilira's handmaiden is Tamara, who allies with Conan in what sounds like a Red Sonja hot amazon role. And there's Ukafa, Singh's untrustworthy henchman for whom a massive African or African American is required. There are »

Fantastic Fest 09: Another review of Solomon Kane

Year: 2009

Directors: Michael J. Bassett

Writers: Michael J. Bassett

Review by: rochefort

Rating: 6 out of 10

The 1600's don't get nearly enough love in cinema, and it's a real shame. The era of witch hunts, musketeers, and flintlock pistols is a ripe one, and has been the setting for such gems as "Captain Blood", "The Three Musketeers" (partial to the Oliver Reed one, of course; totally badass), and "The Conqueror Worm" (aka "Witchfinder General"). And as much money as the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films have made, their success has led more to the greenlighting of franchises based on rides and brands than any real cinematic rediscovery of the 17th century. Anyway, there's something genuinely irresistible about this time frame, at least for me.

I don't know if it's the constant specter of religious strife in the pre- and post-Cromwell era, the fact that this part of »

Gerard Butler Not So Sure About '300' Sequel/Prequel

8 October 2009 8:45 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

There is nothing new about sequel talk or prequel talk regarding 300, the movie that not only was one of the biggest surprises of 2007 but also stands as the primary reason we're seeing so many sword n' sandal movies in various stages of development (Clash of the Titans, Conan, Red Sonja, etc.). The trouble is, the story's not really written for a part two and a prequel might not offer too much that's different.

Still, the rumors continue to fly and Zack Snyder and Frank Miller say the door is open, depending on the story. Clearly, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures want more Spartans, but in order to do that, you might want to work King Leonidas back into the story. Tough to imagine that in a sequel, of course, so that places more emphasis on the events before 300.

For his part, Gerard Butler tells MTV he doesn't know "how real" the franchise talk is. »

Hollywood goes remake crazy - but which is the most pointless?

1 October 2009 11:54 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

With the endless stream of talent shows on TV, it shouldn't really be a shock to any of us that the new Fame remake - a classic tale of the quest for stardom - shot to the top of the UK box office last weekend.

It's among an avalanche of remakes coming our way so get ready to relive the 80s - and several other decades.

Also in the musicals genre, there's a new version of Footloose in the pipeline, with Chace Crawford apparently set to take on the role made famous by Kevin Bacon in the 1984 original.

There are also plenty of film do-overs in the genres of sci-fi, fantasy, action-adventure and horror which are more within the remit of The Geek Files. I've gathered some of them in a poll on the right of the page, where you can vote for those you believe are the most unnecessary. »

Fluid Comics' Fantasy-Centric 'DevaShard' Picked Up For Film Adaptation

18 September 2009 11:38 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

"Conan" and "Red Sonja" are heading to the big screen eventually, but while we wait for the Robert E. Howard creations to hit theaters, an entirely different fantasy comic book might get the movie treatment first.

Variety reports that "DevaShard" -- a Fluid Comics-created maxiseries filled with swords, sorcery and other fantasy elements -- is receiving a film adaptation courtesy of Vanquish Motion Pictures. "Underworld" co-creator and actor Kevin Grevioux will executive produce. Grevioux also provided a story treatment for "DevaShard," which Heather Kenealy, alongside Vanquish toppers Jay Douglas and Nav Gupta, will adapt into the movie's screenplay.

"DevaShard," a 25-issue series that premiered at Comic-Con, takes a cue from Asian mythology and focuses on "two sons -- one born of darkness, the other of light -- who struggle try to find their way through a grim world of corrupt kingdoms, cursed demons and magic," according to Variety.

Tiff '09: Special 'Solomon Kane' Featurette

For some reason I can't watch it here in Toronto, but beyond the break you'll find a new featurette for Solomon Kane, which will premiere tomorrow night at the Midnight Madness portion of the Tiff. Directed by Michael J. Bassett and starring James Purefoy as Solomon Kane, the film adaptation tells the heroic story of a savage warrior in 16th Century England who seeks redemption for a lifetime of sins by renouncing violence to live a life of purity, only to find himself compelled to pick up his sword once again to vanquish a growing evil. The character was originated by pulp-era writer Robert E. Howard, the legendary creator of "Conan" and "Red Sonja". »

McGowan Still on Track for 'Sonja' After Accident

During the shooting of her fiancé Robert Rodriguez's new film "Red Sonja," actress Rose McGowan injured her elbow so badly that production was forced to come to a halt.

While performing her own stunts on the remake of the 1985 Brigitte Neilsen/Arnold Schwarzenegger film, McGowan hurt her arm and had to undergo wrist and elbow surgery that required surgeons to take part of her elbow out.

Rose McGowan confirms she is still playing Red Sonja

29 August 2009 1:52 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

In June, executive producer Joe Gatta assured us that the Red Sonja film project was still alive and said it would be filmed next year.

Rose McGowan was cast in the title role of the Marvel Comics warrior heroine, who began as a secondary character in a Conan the Barbarian comic and is known as the 'she devil with a sword.'

The film was announced in 2008 and was set to film that year. But then McGowan split up with Robert Rodriguez, who was producing the movie (which will be directed by his long-time associate Douglas Aarniokoski), and the economy took a nosedive. It led to the movie being put on hold.

McGowan, who's since got back together with Rodriguez, has been speaking about her involvement with the project on her Twitter page.

She admits she had earlier dropped out of the film for 'personal reasons' - probably her break-up with Rodriguez. »

Red Sonja and Conan the Barbarian Are Making a Comeback…Of Death!!!

19 August 2009 4:45 PM, PDT | thetorchonline | See recent thetorchonline news »

Chances are, when pulp fiction author Robert E. Howard created the character of Conan the Cimmerian, he didn't anticipate his barbarous he-man would one day be brought to the screen by a womanizing Austrian bodybuilder destined to become the governor of California. (And all these years later, I still wince when acknowledging that political truth.) Even less likely is the scribe forseeing that when he concocted the character of Red Sonya of Rogatino, a 16th-century gun-toting Ukrainian woman, she would be later re-imagined by comic book writers as Red Sonja, a chainmail-bikini-clad warrior woman who existed in the same fictional universe as Conan, only to end up as a cinematic heroine played by the paramour of Sylvester Stallone. It's no secret that Hollywood steadfastly refuses to greenlight any genuinely new film projects. »

Marcus Nispel Talks ‘Conan The Barbarian’ Remake

3 August 2009 12:09 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Awhile back the Conan The Barbarian fan site Conan The Movie Blog sent out a list of fan question to director Marcus Nispel (Friday The 13th, Pathfinder) about his upcoming Conan remake. Much to their surprise, Nispel answered back!

In the “exclusive interview” Nispel discusses how he views Conan as a character, what made him take on the remake and why this modern version has to be different from the 1980s film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Conan fans be sure to check it out.

Here are a few choice snippets from the interview:

How important is it to you to stick to the Conan character of the original [Robert E. Howard] stories?

The character of Conan is what most attracted me to this project. He is the last of the reality-based superheroes and the most unapologetic one at that. I find that refreshing in these politically correct times.

What are your thoughts on the previous Conan films? »

Comic Con Trailer for 'Solomon Kane' Now Online

3 August 2009 9:06 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Though it's not a pristine version, the trailer for Solomon Kane that was shown to screaming fans at Comic Con has found its way online. I must confess I don't know very much about the character, which is another creation of Conan and Red Sonja mastermind Robert E. Howard, but he's described on Wikipedia as "a somber-looking man who wanders the world with no apparent goal other than to vanquish evil in all its forms," which could be cool.

Howard ran original stories with Solomon Kane in Weird Tales 100,000 years ago, but it was revived by Marvel Comics back in the 1970s and enjoyed a run into the 80s. Spin-offs have followed, which is part of the reason Dark Horse felt there was enough of an audience to pursue a feature film.
