Finals Week: 'Monstrous Feminism and the Avenging Amazon'

18 December 2009 7:34 PM, PST | Pretty/Scary | See recent pretty-scary news »

Monstrous Feminism and the Avenging Amazon By Paula Graham

On the whole, feminists and lesbians tend to treat the figure of the Amazon as a positive trope for lesbianism and/or feminism. On the one hand, she has the 'masculine' characteristics of strength, physicality and activity and, on the other, she is female-oriented. Her combination of male and female characteristics apparently undermines the exclusivity of gender categories. Her 'chastity' combined with her 'phallic' physicality has obvious lesbian implications. She is perceived by many lesbians and feminists as both 'positive' and 'subversive'...

Representations of the Amazon or female warrior in patriarchal culture, however, may acknowledge a perceived 'threat' of female aggression and seek to neutralise it. Narratives of female militancy tend to enjoy a resurgence in Western patriarchal cultures precisely at historical moments in which there has been an exceptional opening out of gender categories under pressure of social change and political contestation. »

Fantasy heroine Red Sonja is to return in a new comic series titled Wrath Of The Gods, publisher Dynamite Entertainment has revealed. Written by Luke Lieberman and drawn by Walter Geovanni, the tale combines Robert E. Howard's Conan universe with Norse mythology, as the 'She-Devil with a Sword' teams up with Thor and Odin to do battle with Loki. "Wrath Of The Gods explores the mysteries of Sonja's past, while presenting her with the malicious threat of Loki in the present," read Dynamite's solicitation for the book. Masked Rider Trots into New 'Solomon Kane' Clip

15 December 2009 8:44 AM, PST | bloody-disgusting.com | See recent Bloody-Disgusting.com news »

The other day we brought you this kickass clip from Michael J. Bassett's Solomon Kan, now we have yet another look into the feature film adaptation starring James Purefoy as the title character. Below you can watch "Capture of family in the forest," which features Kane witnessing some events from up in the hills. The character of Solomon Kane was originated by pulp-era writer Robert E. Howard, the legendary creator of Conan and Red Sonja. The film adaptation tells the heroic story of a savage warrior in 16th Century England who seeks redemption for a lifetime of sins by renouncing violence to live a life of purity, only to find himself compelled to pick up his sword once again to vanquish a growing evil. »

New Solomon Kane Clip Online

10 December 2009 11:45 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

We're feeling quietly optimistic about Solomon Kane, Michael J. Bassett's screen introduction of Robert E. Howard's (Conan, Red Sonja) evil-vanguishing 16th century puritan adventurer. With its Hammer films vibe (and taste in hats) it's looking like everything Van Helsing should have been but wasn't.James Purefoy takes the lead, with support from the likes of Pete Postlethwaite, Max Von Sydow, Alice Krige and Mackenzie Crook, and Bloody Disgusting have got hold of a short clip, extending the glimpses of the hall of mirrors scene we saw in the trailer. Click here for some reasonably creepy mirror-ghoul action, and dialogue that actually includes a "silence, you dogs". Been a while since we heard that one. The film is released in the UK on February 5th. »

Sans our review, many festival critics have been raving about the dark adaptation that pits man vs Death. To give you an idea of what's in store for you, beyond the break you'll find a clip featuring probably the coolest moment of the film - the "Hall of Mirrors". Check it out and talk below. »

Kull the Conqueror Slashing Up Screens Again

23 November 2009 11:55 PM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

A new Kull the Conqueror film is in the works according to Fantasy.fr. Kull is just the latest in a string of Robert E. Howard pulp adventures to garner studio attention, joining the likes of Solomon Kane, a new Conan

and Red Sonja. According to a transcribed statement courtesy of Coming Soon:

Paradox Entertainment is currently working on a new movie adaptation for Kull the Conqueror.

Fredrik Malmberg, Paradox Entertainment’s CEO, used the occasion of an exclusive interview to reveal his company was working on a new Kull movie.

Fredrik Malmberg also told us about Conan and other ongoing adaptations. You’ll hear of it soon.

Robert Ervin Howard created a hero called Kull in 1929 for the Weird Tales magazine. Howard would draw some inspiration from this character to create Conan, but he dwells in an era predating the cimmerian’s one.

The pulpy creations of Robert E. Howard have been getting lots of recent attention -- Solomon Kane, a new Conan and Red Sonja, even a theoretical Thulsa Doom movie. So it's not really a surprise that Kull The Conqueror will get another chance at chopping up the big screen. According to fantasy.fr (via Coming Soon), a new adapation of Kull is in the works from Paradox Entertainment, who purportedly holds the rights to all Howard's characters and is currently working on bringing Conan back to »

'Kull The Conqueror' To Return To The Big Screen

23 November 2009 7:30 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Robert E. Howard’s “Kull" may get another chance to conquer the silver screen.

According to a report on Fantasy.fr, Paradox Entertainment CEO Fredrik Malmberg has confirmed that a new adaptation of “Kull The Conqueror” is in the works. Paradox is also producing a new “Conan” film, based on Howard’s more famous creation.

First created by Howard in 1929, Kull was an exiled warrior in pre-cataclysmic Atlantis who became a pirate, a mercenary, a gladiator and ultimately a King. In the chronology of Howard’s stories, Kull lived approximately eight thousand years before Conan.

In 1997, a previous adaptation of “Kull The Conqueror” by director John Nicolella was released in theaters with Kevin Sorbo (“Hercules: The Legendary Journeys”) in the title role. However, the film failed to find an audience due in part to its inconsistent tone and the lighter touch it brought to the material.

Britney Spears is Facing the Law

16 November 2009 9:02 PM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Oh Ms. Spears, when will you ever not give celebrity news something to talk about?

Currently Britney Spears finds herself in the midst of two potential lawsuits: one involving social networking site Twitter, the other involving the company that makes the jumbo-sized screens used at concerts.

If you are a Twitter user, you’ll already be aware that accounts set up by celebrities will say, near the username, that the account is verified to actually be that celebrity.

The program was set up by Twitter in June to prevent both lovers and haters of celebs from being able to impersonate them online.

Twitter was spurred to create the program in May, after Tony Larussa, manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, sued the site when a user set up an account under his name. However, the account verification program hasn’t been completely effective at preventing people from posing as different celebrities. »

The U.S. distribution rights for the film adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s “Solomon Kane” have been acquired by Lionsgate.

According to Fangoria, the rights were picked up at the American Film Market and may lead to “Solomon Kane” having a full theatrical release before coming out on DVD.

The $40 million film was written and directed by Michael J. Bassett and stars James Purefoy as the title character. Bassett’s previous films include “Deathwatch” and “Wilderness” while Purefoy is perhaps best known for his role as Marc Antony on the HBO series, “Rome.” Legendary film actor Max Von Sydow also stars in the movie along with Rachel Hurd-Wood, Pete Postlethwaite and Alice Krige.

Created by Howard in 1928, Solomon Kane is a 16th century Puritan warrior who wanders the world in search of evil monsters to slay. Bassett’s film re-imagines Kane as a mercenary soldier who converts to Puritanism »

Shaun Smith has signed on as a creature designer on “Conan” and Scott Wheeler will head up the makeup department. In addition to their time on “300”, Smith created makeup FX for “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” and “The Forbidden Kingdom” while Wheeler has worked extensively on two “Star Trek” movies, “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” and Joss Whedon’s upcoming film “The Cabin in the Woods.”

"As you might expect I really can't say much except it looks really cool and we are excited to be a part of it," Smith related to Mania.com. “Conan” is expected to begin filming in Bulgaria next February.

Dolph Lundgren ponders role in mythical Conan reboot

10 November 2009 12:20 PM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Dolph Lundgren is cool. I don’t care how many direct-to-dvd movies he does a month, Lundgren is a complete bad-ass. So much of a bad-ass in fact that Lundgren might show up in the highly-rumored Conan reboot.

“I’ve talked to the producers about doing something for Conan,’” Lundgren said. “It’s too early,” he said, stating that he wouldn’t know anything certain until “probably next year.”

The updated Conan will directed by Marcus Nispel for Lionsgate. The reboot is expected to more faithful to Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian than the Arnold Schwarzenegger films were.

Lundgren will be seen in Sylvester Stallone’s action-ensemble pic, The Expendables, where the 52-year-old will play a Swedish sniper named Gunnar Jensen. The film is expected to be released on August 20th.

Conan the Barbarian was released in 1982 from director John Milius. Milius later went to direct Red Dawn. »

‘Men in Black 3′ moves forward with script

30 October 2009 5:57 AM, PDT | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Sony Pictures has tapped Tropic Thunder scribe Etan Cohen to pen the script for the third installment of Men in Black.

Cohen is midway through the first draft of the film. No word on any possible plot points but the script is believed to include aliens, cool gadgets and smart-looking suits with somebody getting slimmed.

Director of the first two Men in Black films, Barry Sonnenfeld, will return to helm the third chapter.

Original stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones have yet to formally sign on to the project. If demands are met and large sacks of cash are quickly exchanged in a dark alley, Men in Black 3 could begin production as early as next spring. Both actors are reportedly waiting to see a finished script.

Let’s be clear. This project has more to do with Will Smith than Tommy Lee Jones. If Smith doesn’t come back to the series, »

Casting Breakdown For ‘Conan’ Remake

28 October 2009 2:22 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

/Film pointed us to a detailed breakdown for the characters in Marcus Nispel’s reboot of Conan The Barbarian, which is scheduled to begin shooting in Bulgaria in February.  Nispel brought us Friday the 13th (2009) and The Very Best of Cher: The Video Hits Collection.  If he can slip the right character into that “If I Could Turn Back Time” outfit, I’ll go see Conan in the theaters 32 times.  However, dress that outfit on the wrong character and who knows how many cities will burn?

IMDb lists Roland Kickinger as being rumored to play the barbarian.  You might remember him from such films as Terminator Salvation (he played the T-800’s body) and Lethal Weapon 4Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, the gentlemen credited with writing Conan, worked together previously penning the scripts for Sahara and Dead of Night.

Conan Characters Casting Call

27 October 2009 12:12 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Lionsgate's new Conan starts shooting next February in Bulgaria, with Marcus Nispel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Pathfinder) behind the camera. Moviehole have got their hands on the casting breakdowns, which obviously give a good idea of the characters, and some indication of the plot (beware spoilers). *Deep breath*. Let us tell you of the days of high adventure. For the leads we have, obviously, Conan himself, 20s-30s, Caucasian, the last of the Cimmerians, out for vengeance on Khalar Singh, a formidable warlord and warrior in his 40s or 50s, for whom the producers are "open to all ethnicities". Singh is looking for Queen Ilira, whose blood will help him raise a demon army. Ilira's handmaiden is Tamara, who allies with Conan in what sounds like a Red Sonja hot amazon role. And there's Ukafa, Singh's untrustworthy henchman for whom a massive African or African American is required. There are »

Fantastic Fest 09: Another review of Solomon Kane

Rating: 6 out of 10

The 1600's don't get nearly enough love in cinema, and it's a real shame. The era of witch hunts, musketeers, and flintlock pistols is a ripe one, and has been the setting for such gems as "Captain Blood", "The Three Musketeers" (partial to the Oliver Reed one, of course; totally badass), and "The Conqueror Worm" (aka "Witchfinder General"). And as much money as the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films have made, their success has led more to the greenlighting of franchises based on rides and brands than any real cinematic rediscovery of the 17th century. Anyway, there's something genuinely irresistible about this time frame, at least for me.

I don't know if it's the constant specter of religious strife in the pre- and post-Cromwell era, the fact that this part of »

Gerard Butler Not So Sure About '300' Sequel/Prequel

8 October 2009 8:45 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

There is nothing new about sequel talk or prequel talk regarding 300, the movie that not only was one of the biggest surprises of 2007 but also stands as the primary reason we're seeing so many sword n' sandal movies in various stages of development (Clash of the Titans, Conan, Red Sonja, etc.). The trouble is, the story's not really written for a part two and a prequel might not offer too much that's different.

Still, the rumors continue to fly and Zack Snyder and Frank Miller say the door is open, depending on the story. Clearly, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures want more Spartans, but in order to do that, you might want to work King Leonidas back into the story. Tough to imagine that in a sequel, of course, so that places more emphasis on the events before 300.

For his part, Gerard Butler tells MTV he doesn't know "how real" the franchise talk is. »

Hollywood goes remake crazy - but which is the most pointless?

1 October 2009 11:54 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

With the endless stream of talent shows on TV, it shouldn't really be a shock to any of us that the new Fame remake - a classic tale of the quest for stardom - shot to the top of the UK box office last weekend.

It's among an avalanche of remakes coming our way so get ready to relive the 80s - and several other decades.

Also in the musicals genre, there's a new version of Footloose in the pipeline, with Chace Crawford apparently set to take on the role made famous by Kevin Bacon in the 1984 original.

There are also plenty of film do-overs in the genres of sci-fi, fantasy, action-adventure and horror which are more within the remit of The Geek Files. I've gathered some of them in a poll on the right of the page, where you can vote for those you believe are the most unnecessary. »

Fluid Comics' Fantasy-Centric 'DevaShard' Picked Up For Film Adaptation

18 September 2009 11:38 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

"Conan" and "Red Sonja" are heading to the big screen eventually, but while we wait for the Robert E. Howard creations to hit theaters, an entirely different fantasy comic book might get the movie treatment first.

Variety reports that "DevaShard" -- a Fluid Comics-created maxiseries filled with swords, sorcery and other fantasy elements -- is receiving a film adaptation courtesy of Vanquish Motion Pictures. "Underworld" co-creator and actor Kevin Grevioux will executive produce. Grevioux also provided a story treatment for "DevaShard," which Heather Kenealy, alongside Vanquish toppers Jay Douglas and Nav Gupta, will adapt into the movie's screenplay.

"DevaShard," a 25-issue series that premiered at Comic-Con, takes a cue from Asian mythology and focuses on "two sons -- one born of darkness, the other of light -- who struggle try to find their way through a grim world of corrupt kingdoms, cursed demons and magic," according to Variety.
