One of the best ways to cement a character as otherworldly or ethereal is to give their skin (or fur) a brilliant hue that's unlikely to exist in nature. After all, who can forget how the Wicked Witch of the West burned her way into our collective conscious, due in a large part to her conspicuously verdant epidermis? Or how Tim Curry's character Darkness threatened Tom Cruise and Mia Sara in Legend, wielding ebony horns and a fire-engine red complexion? In honor of the upcoming Avatar, which showcases some pretty spectacular CGI blue feline aliens, here's a little list of some of our favorite characters of a sapphire persuasion. Interestingly, our mutant friends in the X-Men give us not one, not two, not three, but four bluesy folks.

Beast
Nightcrawler
Archangel
Who can forget the brazenly nude Dr. »

Few films earn my immediate attention like a Ridley Scott film... especially when the film involves horses, swords, and Russell Crowe in total gon'-f*ck-shit-up mode. Below is our first look at the trailer for Robin Hood. And I think as we've all suspected from the get-go, it heavily recalls Scott's Kingdom Of Heaven and Gladiator (and I don't know, there's even a little something of Legend there to me). The 72-year-old British director obviously knows how to make these types of films in »

We're down to the last few weeks before James Cameron's Avatar arrives in theaters everywhere. I'm seeing it later this week and I'm sure early reviews will start hitting around then as well. But before we get into that, I wanted to feature this great interview that Hero Complex did with creature designer Neville Page. You may not recognize him yet, but Page is a engineer / artist / designer who has worked previously on Cloverfield, Watchmen, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek, James Cameron's Avatar, and Tron Legacy. He's the guy responsible for designing the creatures, worlds, and vehicles in pretty much all of those films. Read on! Before getting to Avatar, Page explained that he's been inspired the most in his life by Star Wars as well as other films like Blade Runner, Ridley Scott's Legend, and James Cameron's Aliens. And speaking of Aliens, Page actually says »

Movie stars sell movie tickets, but do they also sell video games? The latest title to put this question to the test is "Brütal Legend," a new action-adventure title set in a heavy-metal land of mythic creatures and crushing tunes that stars Tenacious D frontman and "School of Rock" maestro Jack Black as the voice (and likeness) of its head-banging hero Eddie Riggs.
Developed by acclaimed designer Tim Schafer (of "Grim Fandango," "Psychonauts") with Black's creative input, "Brütal Legend" is a heavily hyped game that's invested a lot in the popularity of Black, who's not only touted in ads as the lead but who even has shown up on red carpets dressed as Riggs. More so than any other recent game, "Brütal Legend" has pinned its retail hopes on players' fondness for its lead voice actor, a decision that says a lot about the industry's desire to market their games around recognizable voice talent. »

Hailing from Memphis, Tennessee, rock band Skillet recently released their seventh studio album, entitled Awake, which features the single "Monster". Skillet is currently on tour, but lead singer John Cooper took some time out to write a Top Ten list of his favorite monsters, both in the movies and real life, and has offered to share it exclusively with Dread Central's readers.
1. The Alien - This is one of my favorite movies of all time and the scariest monster ever made as far as I'm concerned.
2. Darth Vader - Not necessarily a "monster" but my favorite villain anyway. His costume, voice, and breathing are absolutely legendary.
3. The Predator - I love the Predator because you watch half of the movie without seeing what he looks like. Then, when you think you have seen it all, he takes his mask off and beats the crap out of Arnold. "Get to the chopper! »

Is it a widely known fact anymore that the evening before Halloween is called Devil's Night? I'm not sure of the history myself, but the term has its origins in 1930s Detroit, if Wikipedia is to be believed (I know, I know-- that's a big "if"). According to tradition, the night would be marked by youthful acts of vandalism and petty crime, though the transgressions increased in severity through the years, with arson unfortunately becoming a common practice through the 1970s and '80s. That all changed in the mid-'90s, when the city organized the volunteer-driven "Angel's Night" and started enforcing age-based curfews. Fans of "The Crow" -- currently in the midst of a week-long retrospective on MTV Splash Page -- are of course familiar with the term, as it factors heavily into that movie.
Grim associations aside, it's a cool name that lends itself well to this particular list feature. »

After an extended wait, Rocktober 13 has finally arrived. If you’re reading this, you likely know what that means. After four years, Tim Schafer and the folks at Double Fine Productions have finally finished off the follow-up to their superb-yet-criminally undersold 2005 release, "Psychonauts." "Brutal Legend" is the latest zany creation to spring forth from Schafer’s mind, and it’s a doozy. But does the adventure measure up to the ordeals of Raz and his psychic summer camp buddies?
The Basics
In "Brutal Legend" you are Eddie Riggs (voiced by Jack Black), a roadie of mammoth proportions, both physically and by reputation. And yet for all of Eddie’s superior roadie-ing abilities, he’s destined to live a life in the shadows, working tirelessly to make everyone around him look good. All of that changes when blood touches Eddie's magical belt buckle following an accident on stage. Our roadie hero »

Few artists have managed the creative task of building entire imaginary worlds to play in – at least not to the degree that Mortiis (aka Håvard Ellefsen) has undertaken over the past fifteen years. After a two-year run as bassist for Emperor (Norway's notorious black metal outfit), Mortiis began to explore epic fantasy music in several ambitious solo projects, and the worlds he envisioned even led him to transform his appearance for live shows – including an elaborate mask resembling the goblin 'Blix' from Ridley Scott's Legend. The image ended up sticking with him for many years, through his most recent albums The Smell of Rain and The Grudge, even as his music moved further from the dark »

At the Aero and Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles, fans will have a rare chance to catch Ken Russell's "The Devils" on the big screen, along with a 10th anniversary screening of "The Blair Witch Project" as the 9th Annual Festival of Fantasy, Horror and Science Fiction gets underway. "The Devils," of course, was set to have a DVD release around a year ago, before Warner Bros. decided the 1971 film starring Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave was way to intense for any kind of release. It now only exists as an extreme title that shows in revival houses. Any chance to see it is a major opportunity for a horror fan. This is one of the greatest horror movies ever made. Also at the festival will be the 10th Anniversary of "The Blair Witch Project" and the premiere of Daniel Myrick's new one, "The Seventh Moon." In addition, »

Back in the days of the old Coming Attractions I had a long-running editorial column called Director's Cut. It allowed me a place to say what was on my mind and what I thought about news or events related to film. Now that CA 2.0 is up and running and I still have access to this mad scientist equipment, I thought why not slap Director's Cut on the operating table, hook it up to the lightning rod and see if I can't bring it back to life? When has that idea ever gone wrong? -- Ps
Ridley Scott is making a new Alien movie and that, my friends, is both a good and a bad thing.
On the surface Scott's involvement in resurrecting the franchise looks like it can only be a positive but once I think about it further, I think that there may be more opportunities for Sir Ridley »

If, like me, you were wondering why the once-promised voice of Ronnie James Dio seemed strangely absent from all of the recent Brütal Legend press material, there's a sad reason for that. According to the guys over at Blabbermouth, all of Dio's contributions have been cut from the game. More info, including some good news on another confirmed cast member, after the break. One can't help but wonder of the dropping of Dio has any relation to the recent Ozzy Osbourne lawsuit against Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi over use of the Sabbath trademark. On a more positive note, despite the Dio-lessness of the game, good news arrives in the addition of Tim Curry to the cast, reportedly to replace Dio. »
