(Michael Allen) Hi Perry, thanks for being here and taking part in this interview. The first time I saw you in film was in the picture Blood Ties directed by Nathaniel Nose. Board with Film? Sony Pictures are Taking a Risk

5 November 2009 12:50 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Shhh… If you listen carefully you can hear across the sound of fingernails scratching the bottom of the film barrel.

Sony Pictures announced they have bought the rights to the world conquest board game Risk from Hasbro and intend to bring “an action-packed, thrilling story are what will make this a uniquely exciting movie” according to Deadline Hollywood who quoted president of Columbia Pictures Doug Belgrad.

Belgrad points out that the success of G.I. Joe and Transformers suggests that film adaptations of popular franchises implies that a Risk movie is a viable option. I’ve no doubt that creative minds exist within the studio system that can turn a shopping list into an Oscar winner but it seems that unless you’re making Clue (and casting the sublime Tim Curry in your movie), transitioning from the medium of a board game to a film makes for a tough path. »

Movies That Make Me Think of Halloween

30 October 2009 9:51 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Recycled Film Experience! I wrote some of this in advance -- years in advance in fact -- to free up time to enjoy this costume crazed holiday. I originally published this list in 2005, but I've tweaked it some. Plus, not all of you were around in 2005. Herewith, the top 12 movies that remind me of Halloween. It's a top ten list and it's not even Tuesday. I'm so generous.

12 The Batman franchise (1989-2008)

In 1997 I went out Halloween clubbing as the Uma version of Poison Ivy. Whenever you dress up as a movie character the year the movie comes out, you'll have competition. There was another Poison Ivy there but I buried her, I promise. I had the horns and all the details, see. It was the longest I ever spent getting ready for Halloween (which is saying something): glue guns, orange wigs, fake foliage, you name it. I don't try as hard anymore. »

Remembering Madeline Kahn

30 September 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Occasionally I'll look through my 'labels' in the internal machinery of this blog and think "my god! I never talk about [insert actor's name here]. Why? What's wrong with me?!?" Yesterday was such a day. The great Madeline Kahn would have celebrated her 67th birthday had she not left us far too soon, ten years ago in fact. Sniffle.

"Here I stand the goddess of desire, set men on fire... I have this power.

Morning, noon and night it's drink and dancing, some quick romancing...

And then a shower."

Team Experience

So, with fond memories of the genius comedienne on my mind, I asked a couple of my guest bloggers to tell me they're favorite Madeline Kahn moments. I need help you see. Obviously I haven't expressed enough love for her right here on my own. The damning evidence: No label before today.

My Favorite Scene: 90210's Maeve Quinlan Edition!

16 September 2009 6:00 PM, PDT | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

Sometimes Movieline's "My Favorite Scene" feature is a bit too intimidating. Who can choose just one of Charlie Chaplin's gymnastic eye rolls? Or one searing Marlon Brando monologue? I can't even decide between Lesley Ann Warren's several scenes of sauntering through the study while brandishing a cigarette and a candlestick in Clue. Maeve Quinlan, who starred for over a decade on The Bold and the Beautiful before landing the role of Constance Tate-Duncan on the new 90210, has a wide assortment of favorite movies and shared them all for our newest "Mfs" installment. »

Top Ten Tuesday: Ensemble Comedies

1 September 2009 8:45 AM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Funny movies make us laugh, that’s a no-brainer. But, what happens when you get a movie with Lots of funny people in it? Chances are, if it’s done well, you get an exponentially funnier movie. It’s like asking someone if they’d like a scoop of ice cream, or if they’d like three scoops of ice cream with hot fudge, caramel, whipped topping, nuts, sprinkles (gotta have sprinkles) and a cherry on top… it’s an easy decision. That’s sort of like asking someone if they want to see Mike Judge’s new comedy Extract, which opens nationwide in theaters this Friday. This should be an easy decision as well. So, we Movie Geeks decided to reflect on these movies and “extract” a list of our Top Ten Best Ensemble Comedies.

Girls on Film: The Wrath of Madeline Kahn

17 August 2009 6:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Many funny women have graced the screen over the years, from Mabel Normand to Lucille Ball to Tina Fey, but one woman's impact was unlike any other -- Madeline Kahn's.

When Star Trek was looming and there was a loud undercurrent of chatter about the previous space-led films, my brain got punny and came up with "The Wrath of Madeline Kahn." At first, I explained away my attachment to the title as part of my love of word play. But soon, I realized it was more than that. Kahn's wrath is a lot of what made her such an indelible comedic figure in Hollywood, one that grabbed two Oscar nominations for her craft.

We always see wrath as this bubbling explosion of anger that hunts down victims near and far. But with Kahn, it was all caught within herself -- wrath (of anger and exuberance) trapped in a human-shaped globe, »

Psycho named UK’s top movie shower scene

14 August 2009 4:13 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

Here at Boxwish we love that movies can inspire you to try new things. Right now many Us cinema-goers are having a go at cooking the recipes of celebrity cook Julia Child thank to the new movie Julie and Julia, but the message can work both ways – sometimes cinema can put you off certain things. Remember how Jaws scared you from swimming in the sea or how Enduring Love had you quaking at the thought of hot air balloon trips? Well, Psycho and its iconic shower scene must surely be one of the most powerful film deterrents (hands up who took a bath rather than a shower after watching Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) kill Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) in his Bates Motel bathroom?) and the potent power of this horrifying visual has helped it secure the number one spot in a new poll to find the most memorable movie shower scene. »

Can 'Machete' And Its Ridiculous Cast Stack Up To These Five Ensemble Films?

6 August 2009 11:30 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Buckets of blood, violence, foul language and mother-lovin' Danny Trejo aside, "Machete" boasts some serious assets in the form of its impressive ensemble cast. Some of the actors lining up for the Robert Rodriguez-produced "Grindhouse" spin-off include Robert De Niro, Lindsay Lohan, Don Johnson and Steven Seagal. Seriously -- Steven Seagal! The same martial arts genius that brought you "Above the Law," "Hard to Kill" and my personal favorite, "Under Siege 2: Dark Territory"! Not to mention this little gem...

Assuming that all goes as it should, "Machete" is in a position to become one of the most enjoyable ensemble films of all time. The giddier I get about the news, the more and more I think about other classic ensemble movies that "Machete" will one day measure up to. For your reading pleasure, here are five slices from the never-ending ensemble movie pie.

Scenes We Love: Murder By Death

22 June 2009 4:45 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Lionel Twain (Truman Capote) has invited the five greatest detectives to a "dinner and murder." How can they resist? Included are a blind butler, a deaf-mute maid, screams, spinning rooms, secret passages, false identities, and more plot turns and twists than are decently allowed.

When you see a plot summary like that, how can you resist? It's pure ridiculousness. Nine years before Clue, there was Neil Simon's Murder By Death -- a most excellent spoof on the classic literary detectives: Peter Falk as Sam Diamond (Spade), Elsa Lanchester as Jessica Marbles (Marple), David Niven and Maggie Smith as Dick and Dora Charleston (Charles), James Coco as Milo Perrier (Poirot), and Peter Sellers as Sidney Wang (Chan). Rounding out the cast, there's James Cromwell as a ridiculous French chauffeur, Eileen Brennan (of later Clue fame) as Spade's dame, Alec Guinness as the butler Bensonmum, Nancy Walker as the deaf-mute maid »

Movies That Deserve a Second Life: Comedy Edition

5 April 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Welcome to another edition of Movies That Deserve a Second Life. If you need a refresher on what I’m referring to by “second life,” check out the Action/Adventure Edition. If you’re caught up, read on to see what funny flics I felt were unfairly ignored/disliked upon its release or have been forgotten in the years since its release.

Comedy is almost certainly the most subjective of all genres. What makes one person laugh is guaranteed to make another yawn or wrinkle his/her brow. Some find juvenilia in poor taste while others bust a gut. Everyone claims to have a sense of humor, but almost no one enjoys every type of humor there is, from dry wit and pungent satire to bodily fluid gags and intentionally groan-worthy puns. Therefore, I think it’s safe to say that no one (besides myself) will be satisfied with every choice. »

Verbinski To Direct Cluedo Movie

25 February 2009 2:00 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

A movie version of classic British boardgame Cluedo is heading to the big screen.

Pirates of The Caribbean filmmaker Gore Verbinski is slated to direct the project.

In the game - named Clue in the U.S. - competitors bid to solve the murder of one of a number of colourful characters in a country house.

Cluedo/Clue has racked up sales of more than $1 billion (GBP690 million) in more than 50 countries since it first went on sale back in 1948.

Verbinski will hope his movie fares better than the last attempt to turn Cluedo into a movie - 1985's Clue flopped at the box office. »

Gore Verbinski To Direct ‘Clue’ Movie

25 February 2009 11:51 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Of all the board games out there, the one which has potential to be at least a decent movie is Clue (or as us Brits know it - Cluedo). For those of you who may not know, there was already a movie of the game made back in 1985 which starred Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd and Michael McKean.

And it seems that Hollywood thinks there’s enough there to warrant another movie based on the game, with the ball set in motion with Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski in final negotiations to direct.

Now I can’t speak for the 1985 film since I haven’t seen it, but I do know that it’s somewhat of a cult film (although with a much smaller following than the likes of The Rocky Horror Picture Show or Donnie Darko) and therefore fans of it will probably end up being »

Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski to helm Clue

25 February 2009 10:14 AM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Director Gore Verbinski is finally getting a Clue. Universal Studios has attached the director of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy to adapt the famous Hasbro board game to the big screen. He will work on the film through his company Blind Wink, and will share producing duties with Hasbro's Bennet Schneir and Brian Goldner. By the way Blind Wink senior vice president Jonathan Krauss describes the project, it doesn't sound like it will be very similar to the adaptation from 1985 starring Tim Curry. Instead, Krauss has called it "a global thriller and transmedia even that uses deductive reasoning as its storytelling engine." This idea of upgrading a board game is not new to Hasbro - the company has other projects in or near production based on their products. Transformers: Revenge of »

Gore Verbinski to Direct Clue

25 February 2009 6:26 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Someone out there is a genius. Combining the best of two current Hollywood trends, the remake and the board game movie, Universal Pictures have reportedly hired Gore Verbinski (The Ring, Pirates of the Caribbean) to direct a movie based on the murder mystery game Clue. Readers that are old enough to remember the '80s will probably recall that Clue is the one board game that has already been adapted to a movie; in 1985, Jonathan Lynn directed a feature film version starring Tim Curry and Christopher Lloyd. It remains to be seen if the new version will also be released with multiple endings. The good news is that this will not get in the way of Gore Verbinski's plans to direct »

Does Gore Verbinski Have a 'Clue'?

25 February 2009 5:02 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Nothing is sacred. Get ready, because I'm sure Gin, The Movie is on its way, as well as remakes of Gone with the Wind and Citizen Kane, plus someone with enough cojones to try and replicate Bruce Campbell's Ash.

The Hollywood Reporter posts that following in the footsteps of Monopoly, Candy Land, and Ouiga Board, we're getting Clue. Or, rather, more Clue, since I'm sure you all know that we've already had an amazingly wonderful adaptation of the board game starring the likes of Tim Curry, Michael McKean, and the late, great Madeline Kahn.

Undaunted (or perhaps even enthused by the first flick's cult status), Universal is moving ahead with a new Clue feature, and Gore Verbinski is in final negotiations to direct and produce the project. That means it won't be a modest feature of murder, ropes, candlesticks, and intrigue, but some sort of rip-roaring big budget murder movie. »

Gore Verbinski to helm "Clue"

25 February 2009 | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

Gore Verbinski will direct Universal Pictures "Clue," based on the murder mystery Hasbro board game. Verbinski will produce via his Blind Wink company alongside Brian Goldner and Bennett Schneir of Hasbro.  Verbinski is directing "Bioshock" for Universal next. "Clue" passed a massive $1 billion in sales and was developed in England by a retired legal clerk named Anthony Pratt during WWII. The game was first released in 1948.   There was another film previously made that was released in 1985 which starred Tim Curry, Eileeen Brennan, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Lesley Anne Warren, Martin Mull and Collen Camp.   The first being such a classic, let's hope this is not butchered. Still, Verbinski is immensely capable.     »

Gore Verbinski Tapped to Direct Board Game Based Adaptation of 'Clue'

24 February 2009 11:05 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Movies based on board games appear to be all the rage with folks like Ridley Scott set to direct a "Monopoly" adaptation and Kevin Lima ready to direct Etan Cohen's adaptation of "Candyland" and now we learn of yet another stab at turning Hasbro's "Clue" is in the works with Pirates of the Caribbean helmer Gore Verbinski attached to direct for Universal. "Clue" was adapted for the screen back in 1985 with the Jonathan Lynn directed film that starred Christopher Lloyd and Tim Curry. The film bombed at the box-office with poor reviews and a $14 million return. The board game is a murder mystery scenario centered on six suspects, six possible murder weapons and nine rooms in an unnamed mansion. Players seek clues to solve the crime. Was it Colonel Mustard in the Conservatory with the Revolver? Or did Miss Scarlet commit the crime in the Library with the Candlestick? »
