2009 was a year of delights at the movies. The list below testifies to that. It doesn't rival '07 when two examples of virtual moviemaking perfection were released--namely "No Country for Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood" but '09 may have been filled with as many unexpectedly joyful film going experiences as I can remember in a single calendar year.
From sitting in the first public screening of what should have been a forgetful and frivolous romantic comedy on a frigid night in Park City (see #8) to being flabbergasted by the inventiveness of a would-be sci-fi auteur (whose name I couldn't spell or pronounce at the time, see #7) for 112 riveting minutes. Franchises were reborn. Genres were injected with new life. Stephen Sommers made a watchable film called "G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra." Young filmmakers came of age. And one mad genius with the heart of a pussycat and »

Remember Jim Carrey in Liar, Liar, where he forces himself to tell the truth for 24 hours? Well, here Jim Carrey forces himself to answer yes to any request, for a year. Which is upping the ante somewhat, but doesn't make it a better film. This is a return to the manic, gurning, not-very-funny Carrey, as if The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine etc hadn't happened. Just say no.
The Golden Compass (Chris Weitz, 2007)

The prices plummeted this year, so Blu-ray players are likely to be under plenty of Christmas trees. Phelim O'Neill advises what to play on them
Blockbusters
Jj Abrams's rebooted Star Trek (Paramount) was not only the sole moment of unbridled fun in this year's blockbuster season but the best, full bells and whistles Blu-ray issue, too. With its sparkling HD visuals (not a given for Blu-ray), vibrant soundtrack and exhaustive supplementary material, it's ideal for showing to anyone who dares ask, "Why all the fuss about Blu-ray?"
Documentary
Let's not forget the educational importance of Blu-ray. Actually, let's do, as the picture quality on series like David Attenborough's Planet Earth and Life (BBC) is so gobsmackingly pristine that the senses are too overloaded to take in any useful information. Better to go for slightly lower-fi stuff, documentaries where the pictures do all the talking »

Salute Your Shorts is a weekly column that looks at short films, music videos, commercials or any other short form visual media that generally gets ignored.Although most of America was introduced to that somewhat odd niche of filmmaking known as mockumentaries through This is Spinal Tap, it’s been around since 1933 when Luis Bunuel went ahead and ripped apart the newly born genre of documentaries with “Land Without Bread.” Unfortunately for Bunuel, his attempt at parody went largely unnoticed to the point where the film is frequently misattributed as an actual documentary, which probably explains why it went without imitation »

It is a cold December night in old London town. An extraordinary tour bus circles the streets around Clapham Junction Station, prowling for the perfect place to pull up and party. Opposite the station there stands The Clapham Grand – the grand old lady of popular entertainment. Tonight she awaits the arrival of a titan of musical mythology. Tonight her sound system and her stage will be pushed to the very limits of their one hundred and nine year history as the drums thunder and the guitars scream and the amps are cranked all the way up to eleven…
Tonight she will bow down to the loud sound of the mighty Spinal Tap!
On Thursday 3rd December the Jameson Cult Film Club bestowed a generous gift upon lovers of great film and very silly rock bands by hosting a screening of rockumentary classic This is Spinal Tap. Not ones to do »

It's always great to see "Twilight" cast members getting along off-screen, and there were a couple of shout-outs bouncing around the Twitter-Wood feed today. Edi Gathegi wished Christian Serratos could be with him on a plane ride, but he had to settle for her advice on candy shenanigans. Elsewhere, Tinsel Korey sought Chaske Spencer's glitter skills in some Advent calendar construction.
In non-"Twilight" tweets "I'm on a Boat" seems to be a popular pick among the Grammy nominations this year, and Seth Meyers was among the first to back it. Michael McKean, meanwhile, will be pulling for Bela Fleck and Loudon Wainwright. Check out those posts after the jump, along with Richard Kelly's new prospective "Donnie Darko 3" premise and Danny DeVito's Thanksgiving Troll Foot costume. It's all in the Twitter-Wood report for December 3, 2009.

Cinema Retro has received the following press release from the Jameson Cult Film Club, which is affiliated with Jameson Irish Whiskey:
The infamous eighteen-inch-high Stonehenge in rockumentary classic, This is Spinal Tap, has been voted the ultimate 'rock' cult film moment of all time by almost half (48%) of British film fans.
Dennis Hopper and the classic motorcycle moments set to Steppenwolf’s of 'Born to be Wild' in Easy Rider came a close second in the poll with 22% of the votes, followed by Bill and Ted's "excellent" guitar solo in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (19%).
The research, commissioned by Jameson Cult Film Club, which brings classic cult movie screenings to life via an immersive cinematic experience, also reveals that the music from 90’s movie Trainspotting is the favourite soundtrack of all time with almost 40 per cent of the votes (39%). In 1997, it was awarded 'best soundtrack' in the Brit Awards. »

Tiger Woods was a hot topic on Twitter this weekend, and that meant he became a trending topic in Twitter-Wood. Somehow his Cadillac Escalade has become a subject of interest too, particularly with one "Harper's Island" actor who pointed out that the golfer wasn't driving a Buick.
"Toy Story 3" director Lee Unkrich, meanwhile, retweeted some great shots of homemade models based on the Disney-Pixar series, they're mighty impressive. Also impressive has been the performance by "New Moon" in theaters this month, but Jim Carrey took note of the movie's rabid fans and issues a warning in response. Check out those tweets along with sad news from Emmy Rossum, how to get to Sesame Street and Sarah Silverman's reaction to "Precious." It's all waiting after the jump in the Twitter-Wood report for November 30, 2009.

Game Of The Year is a mockumentary written and directed by local filmmaker Chris Grega (Amphetamine, Rhineland). The film follows a rag-tag group of guys who put together a team to compete on the reality TV show called “Game of the Year” in which teams square off against each other in role-playing games. The winning team gets to run the host’s new gaming company for one year. What ensues is a special brand of humor and a film that is either ridiculously revealing and hilariously nostalgic, depending on the viewer’s own history with role-playing.
The cast of character’s developed for the film are perfect. The game master, or in other words the living breathing rule book of the role-playing game, is a British ex-pat named Richard who is both arrogant and lacking any actual control of his players. The remainder of the team consists of the hopeless, »

The gods must be crazy. And who can blame them? This pure sensory overload trailer is enough to make anyone crazy: scorpion-like monsters, brutal carnage and so many quick cuts you'd think they used one of the swords to edit the damn thing. Not to mention it's got the heaviest soundtrack since This Is Spinal Tap. In this redo of the 1981 campfest Clash of the Titans, Sam Worthington plays Perseus, the half-divine son of Liam Neeson's Zeus who's on a gamer mission that finds him leaping into the underworld of Hades, played by Ralph Fiennes. Depending on your cinematic needs, this could be the best thing since 300 or the worst rip on it. What say you? »

Yankees supporters were out in force last night, and a few Twitter-Wood citizens were right by the field uploading pics. Brody Stevens may have shot the most enviable of the day, apparently getting soon-to-be-mvp Hideki Matsui in the dugout before the game. Jeremy Piven caught another high-quality photo-op, though, standing with his fellow Chicagoan Brian Urlacher.
Poor John Favreau was stuck in the editing room for "Iron Man 2," though, which he noted on his account. Larry King, Eliza Dushku and other added their thoughts after Phillies finally went down. Check out all of their tweets, along with Brett Ratner's pic with Mariah Carey after wrapping her video and Andy Milonakis. They're all in the Twitter-Wood report for November 5, 2009.

I’m no music expert what with their fancy degrees and ability to appreciate music beyond “This sounds good.” But I do know lists and lists generate controversy and controversy equals traffic! And with their patented “slideshow” format which creates more hits based on an itemized story, EW.com has a real racket going!
Well, we just listed it like normal people after the jump. Take a look, see if you agree, and scream your disbelief at how a certain album you love wasn’t included. Also, remember that this is a list of soundtracks which are usually a collection of songs used in a movie as opposed to a score which is usually the instrumental accompaniment to the film created by a single composer (although there are obviously scores created by more than one composer).
If you want to click through the list like a chump, click here. It »

Now that it's finally hit DVD, Sound on Sight takes a long-delayed look at a documentary that some are lauding as one of the year's best: Anvil: The Story of Anvil, which chronicles its titular Toronto metal band as they attempt to stage an ambitious European comeback tour after years of complete obscurity. To tie in to that film, we'll also be talking about the similarly inclined doc Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, as well as the legendary mockumentary that winds up informing both docs quite a bit : Rob Reiner's This Is Spinal Tap. When you think about movie parodies -- we could be talking Airplane!, the Austin Powers films, or one of those great old Mad magazine satires, which were really the first place that a lot of us, as kids, got to "see" movies made for adults -- the key to a terrific send-up would seem to be the art of exaggeration, pure and simple. But there’s a particular brand of cinematic parody that I love, at this point, almost more than any other. And though it does employ the art of exaggeration (in very, very deadpan ways), far more than that, »

"Like many of you, I was stuck," narrates Guardian writer Paul MacInnes in his best Chuck Palahniuk-style monotone. "I looked at blog after blog, trying to find some Star Wars fan site that would justify my existence. This was my life, and it was ending one minute at a time." In a very funny take on Fight Club, MacInnes' short video has the frustrated blogger receiving an e-mail that invites him to a "dodgy warehouse," and finds him taking part in a stage-fighting workshop where he gets the chance to beat up a writer from Men's Fitness magazine.
The workshop, it turns out, was a publicity event put on by Jameson's Irish Whiskey's Cult Film Club, a London film series that features movies like Trainspotting, This is Spinal Tap and, of course, Fight Club. The movies are all free, and the website promises a complimentary glass of Jameson's, »

It seems Seth Rogen and Michel Gondry are Anvil fans. The La Times writes that the heavy metal band, which achieved its peak popularity in the '80s, will get a cameo in The Green Hornet. The newest adaptation based on the comic-book hero is being directed by Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) and stars Rogen, who also helped draft the script.
Apparently, Anvil will make an appearance in a rock club as themselves. They'll play some songs and then ... explode? Well, that's what's written. We'll have to wait and see what that means.
The band was the focus of a recent critically acclaimed documentary directed by Sacha Gervasi. A tragicomic then-and-now look at faded stardom, Anvil! The Story of Anvil is often times cited as a real-life counterpart to This Is Spinal Tap. The movie won an Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature at the La Film Festival. »

The Canadian metal band, Anvil, has been waiting decades to explode, and, thanks to Michel Gondry and The Green Hornet, they’ll get their chance to do just that. An article in the La Times about the documentary about the band, Anvil! The Story Of Anvil, also makes mention the band has filmed a cameo for the Seth Rogen-starring superhero movie. There is no mention who the band will be playing specifically, whether it be themselves or a made-up band for the film. What the article does say, however, is that the band will (literally) explode during their cameo at a rock club. Nothing like dying doing what you love, right?
While this news of Anvil’s cameo in The Green Hornet was brought up as an aside in the article, the main focus is the fact that Anvil! has become the first screener sent out to Academy Awards voters. »
