The Jeff Bridges Interview: The 'Crazy Heart' star talks music, marriage and mortality

11 December 2009 12:11 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Mention Jeff Bridges to almost anyone and they immediately can reference their favorite Bridges’ character, whether it’s the innocent alien in “Starman,” the burnt-out DJ in “The Fisher King,” the mediocre jazz musician in “The Fabulous Baker Boys,” the valiant president in “The Contender” or the now iconic Dude from “The Big Lebowski.”   With “Crazy Heart,” Bridges has added another unforgettable character to his remarkable 40-year career. In the film, out Dec. 16, he plays Bad Blake, a once-successful country singer who’s traveled thousands of miles down dark, bad roads. At the bottom of a downward slide, he drives from »

The Trailer for 'Crazy Heart' Starring Jeff Bridges

16 November 2009 9:25 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

The trailer for Jeff Bridges' drama Crazy Heart has arrived online, and you can check it out by clicking on the Trailer tab above. This film is garnering a lot of attention for Bridges, and Oscar buzz seems to be following in its wake.

Bridges has been nominated four-times for an Academy Award, but hasn't yet taken home a statue. He was nominated for The Contender (2000), Starman (1984), Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974) and The Last Picture Show (1971).

In Crazy Heart, Bridges stars as the richly comic, semi-tragic romantic anti-hero Bad Blake in the debut feature from writer-director Scott Cooper. Bad Blake is a broken-down, hard-living country music singer who’s had way too many marriages, far too many years on the road and one too many drinks way too many times. And yet, Bad can’t help but reach for salvation with the help of Jean (Golden Globe® Nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal »

Trailer, Poster, and Oscar Buzz for Crazy Heart Starring Jeff Bridges

16 November 2009 8:16 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Jeff Bridges is an actor who’s overdue for an Oscar.  He’s been nominated four times before (Best Supporting Actor for The Contender, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, and The Last Picture Show; Best Actor for Starman) and has a wealth of great performances in his filmography.  It looks like Bridges is adding another one to his filmography as he’s getting some serious Oscar-buzz for his performance as a hard-living country singer in Crazy Heart.

This is also good news for Fox Searchlight, which looked like they were going to be out of this year’s Oscar race after Amelia flopped.  Now a film which was on no one’s radar two months ago is being called The Wrestler of 2009.  You can get that sense from both the poster and trailer for the film but not in a “me too” kind of way.  I’m always up for Jeff Bridges »

Jeff Bridges: The Dude Who Stares At Goats

28 October 2009 9:01 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

November 6th will see the release of the much anticipated The Men Who Stare at Goats. The film about an army battalion of “psychic spies” stars four Hollywood’s heavyweights: George Clooney, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Spacey, and Ewan McGregor.

Although each actor is well-known and has been in stand-out movies–Spacey in American Beauty, Clooney in Ocean’s 11, and McGregor in Moulin Rouge–Bridges takes the cake for playing, arguably, one of the most memorable characters in cinema history.

Bridges has had a long acting career, getting his unofficial start as an infant in the 1950 melodrama The Company She Keeps. At nine years old, Bridges began working in television with small roles in various shows over the next several years.

His first major role came in 1971, at the age of 22, in the film The Last Picture Show. The coming of age flick was a stellar debut for Bridges, earning him »

Fantastic Fest Review: ‘Survival of the Dead’

30 September 2009 12:15 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

As a big fan of horror movies and the zombie sub-genre, I really wanted to like George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead and was prepared to give it the benefit of the doubt as much as possible. Although, my expectations were pretty low after Romero’s last two zombie movie efforts Land of the Dead and Diary of the Dead. Sadly, this film didn’t even manage to rise up to the level of my lowered expectations and is, instead, a heavily flawed and often very bad addition to Romero’s body of work.

Still, this is the man who basically invented the zombie film genre, so attention must be paid and respect given for his enduring legacy as one of this country’s innovative artists. But something has obviously gone a bit off kilter and the writer/director seems to have lost his way. I’m not »

Starman (Blu-Ray Review)

Starman on Blu-Ray

Main Feature (1H 54M 58S)

I am a huge fan of John Carpenter and Jeff Bridges and while I was pretty sure I had seen this movie many years ago I was also confident I had forgotten almost everything about it. Carpenter fails to hit the highs he achieved with other films; the same can be said of Bridges and Karen Allen. At the end of the day, in spite of these small disappointments, you’re left with something quite pleasant.

Starman appears to adopt many elements from previous movies in the sci-fi genre. At various points in the movie we are treated to short bursts of music which bear more than a little resemblance to the wonderful score from Vangelis in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner. Near the beginning of the movie Allen is shown walking around in a top and panties which reminded me of »

Starman - Blu-ray Review

17 August 2009 5:54 AM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Starman is certainly a different film in John Carpenter.s filmography, but a wonderful one as well. It features and intriguing performance from Jeff Bridges, a radiant Karen Allen, and a wonderful storyline. The Voyager II space probe was launched with a message of peace and an invitation to visit Earth for whatever alien life that encountered the probe. When an alien life form takes us up on the invitation, it is shot down by our jets on the orders of Nsa Chief George Fox (Richard Jaeckel). The spaceship crashes in the woods and the alien inhabitant comes upon the cabin of Jenny Hayden (Karen Allen). She.s watching some home movies of her late husband. The alien takes »

'District 9' Has Nothing On The Creepy Alien Invasion In 'Batteries Not Included'

14 August 2009 10:30 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

I haven’t seen "District 9" yet, but you really only need the trailer to get a heaping spoonful of the heebie jeebies. Better yet, check out Neill Blomkamp’s “Alive in Joburg,” the short film “District 9” is based on. It is, in a word, unsettling. As repulsive as the human population’s treatment of the stranded aliens is, you can almost sympathize; they are inhuman, and that otherness coupled with closeness to our homes makes the skin crawl. That much is evident in the "D9" clip below:

It’s a classic trope in sci-fi cinema, alien infiltration. Not invasion mind you, I mean aliens living among us, incognito or otherwise. Here are five classics that did it best. Before "District 9" came along, that is.

John Carpenter’s got a knack for directing scary alien stories. “The Thing”, with its titular extraterrestrial that can shapeshift and horrifically disfigure people, »

Starman Blu-ray Review

10 August 2009 10:47 PM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Starman (1984) tells the tale, in a vein similar to E.T., of an alien who visits Earth and spends the movie's run time trying to return home. Upon arrival, Starman (Jeff Bridges) befriends a lonely woman, Jenny Hayden (Karen Allen), by taking the form of her deceased husband. Trepidatious at first (who wouldn't be if your dead spouse suddenly reappeared), the widow warms to our visitor as she helps him learn Earth habits and human interaction. But of course the government wants to "study" our friendly extraterrestrial and is quickly in pursuit. This turns the narrative into a road movie with the duo on the run to get Starman home before being captured. Director John Carpenter (Halloween, The Thing, Escape From New York) was riding high on critical and fan support when he made this film before maligning his career with his 1990's output (Escape from La, Village of the Damned »

The Blu-Ray Review: Starman (1984)

8 August 2009 12:11 PM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Colin Jacobson reviews the 1980's classic.

After a career based around horror movies, director John Carpenter went down a different path with 1984's Starman. The Voyager II spacecraft sends a message of peace to any potential non-terrestrials who hear it. One of them does, and he takes us up on our invitation.

Unfortunately, we don't greet his arrival very well. Armed forces shoot down the alien over Wisconsin, and he crash lands near the remote cabin of grieving widow Jenny Hauden (Karen Allen). Trailer - Timberlake, Bridges Hit 'The Open Road'

4 August 2009 10:59 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

There are two things about the trailer for The Open Road that stood out to me. The first is the tagline, which considering what appears to be a pretty standard story and a fairly inexpensive trailer, is surprisingly clever. Not saying it's great, just clever. I won't give that away, though. The other thing that stands out, as he often does, is Jeff Bridges.

Bridges has never taken the easiest path. He could have been a much bigger star in his 80s and 90s heyday, but he preferred more substantial, original roles like Starman, Fearless, and The Fisher King. He has four Oscar nominations but it should really be six or seven. He stands out to me here for another reason, though: what can a really good leading man do when the material probably isn't terribly unique? Does he wilt or does he find that there's a lot more room to explore the character? »

You Know You Want This 'Stock Carpenter' T-Shirt

(From SciFi Squad)

Our good friends over at Dutch Southern are always sending us their latest movie-related t-shirt designs, and so we're back pimping out another piece of their fantastic geeky film gear -- this time it's a t-shirt honoring some of John Carpenter's best. Here's the description:

"It's a stock car race featuring some of the best from John Carpenter's cannon. 1st place: Dr. Loomis driving Burton's rig, MacReady riding shotgun, Nada and Burton standing guard, and Lo Pan just seconds away from eating the Pork Chop Express. 2nd place: the Duke in his Lincoln, Starman serving as co-pilot, and Snake surfing.3rd place: Christine, manned by an Alien and a Thing with Michael Myers making an escape from Smith's Grove. And if you look close enough in their dust you'll see The Fog people, the Statue of Liberty, the Three Storms, and a jack-o-lantern."

Starman on Blu-Ray

20 July 2009 9:26 AM, PDT | www.canmag.com | See recent CanMag news »

They must have done a restoration job when they put out the last DVD special edition of Starman because this Blu Ray looks almost unreal. The quality is super high and only the color pallet and lighting aesthetic hint at any original film look. Meaning, it.s still true to the original film but looks way better than could have been imagined in 1984.

On Blu-Ray: Starman

The shots in space look like 2001 or what Star Wars could look like in this format. Any setting on the country road trip they take is packed with minute detail in the landscape or roadways. Karen Allen.s freckles are no longer hidden by makeup and film grain, and Jeff Bridges was just a flawless specimen for the ladies. »

Event Report: AMPAS' Tribute to FX Legend Dick Smith

29 June 2009 1:10 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In Hollywood, it is celebrity which makes headlines, but what lasts longest in this industry is respect The key to respect is something nobody on Earth has the time or experience to analyze, but it is an easy thing to gauge: if you were at AMPAS’s tribute to legendary makeup artist Dick Smith, you saw respect in the eyes of the likes of Rick Baker, Linda Blair, and Hal Holbrook. This salute drew the newsworthy likes of J.J. Abrams and John Landis, but this was merely the audience. The great make-up artist Rick Baker moderated panels that included actor Linda Blair, recent Oscar-winner Greg Cannom, and a host of others who came to express their gratitude for this titan of make-up. You also saw a love for the art of makeup, and, indeed, love for the mastery of any art form, whether it be cinematic or otherwise. And you »

Mr. Brooks Director to 'Dive' Into the Minds of the Dead

Last December we told you about a new horror film from Intrepid Pictures entitled Diver, which was being pitched as Flatliners meets Se7en. Today, we learned exclusively that Bruce Evans (Mr. Brooks) has been tapped to direct Diane Ademu-John's screenplay about a secret division of the FBI with agents called "divers" who voluntarily flatline to see murder victims' killers in the minutes before their deaths. Once these agents dive into the world of the dead they must deal with "the grey man," a mysterious force that drives divers to insanity. Bruce A. Evans also scripted Stand By Me and Starman for John Carpenter. »

1984 Jams and Starman

12 May 2009 11:20 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

I blame the T-800 model for my sudden 1984 enthusiasm. Don't worry, I think it's a 24 hour bug. It'll pass. See, I was watching The Terminator again yesterday (a few posts coming your way to lead up to Terminator Salvation). So, I started researching 1984 and if these old movie songs have to be stuck in my head today, they should also be stuck in yours.

I believe in sharing.

I often forget how long Diane Lane (Streets of Fire, the second clip) has been rocking the movie screens, don't you?

On the other hand, I do remember Jeff Bridges (Against All Odds, third clip) circa 1984, both bearded and un. He made quite an, um, impression in Starman. That's still one of the weirdest Oscar nominations ever for Best Actor. I love that he was nominated for his alien role but I didn't realize it was at the expense of another performance »

Between Dimensions: Starman Still Connects… But With Keanu?

8 April 2009 5:59 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

As the winter of ‘09 has refused to depart gracefully, some movie time travel seemed a smart avoidance technique. I found myself stopping in 1984 wondering how well Starman would hold up after a quarter-century. I had vague memories of Jeff Bridges acting but nothing more. I’m pleased to say that Starman remains an excellent film. More surprisingly though, it seems to be what fans were expecting from Keanu, Scott Derrickson, and company in their unsatisfying remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still. Starman’s premise is classically simple. A UFO is spotted heading for California. This “provocative” flight path encourages the air force to shoot it down. The alien presence survives the crash in Wisconsin. While browsing his new neighborhood, the alien enters a cabin owned by Jenny Hayden (Karen Allen). Deep in grief over the recent loss of her husband Scott, she is crying her way through home »

Top Ten: After Kate Winslet, Who?

4 March 2009 10:48 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Kate Winslet finally won her Oscar, delighting the bulk of fans who have been rooting for her since she dreamt of Hollywood in '94 -- 'they're desperately keen to sign me up!' -- or nearly drowned in '97. She never let go. So, who is next?

Or rather... who is most overdue?

Contrary to popular belief, it ain't easy to win an Oscar. It certainly wasn't easy for Kate the Great. You need more than an accent, a disability, a good or popular movie, old age makeup or mimicry skills. You also need star charisma, a role that compliments or complicates that charisma and media support. Above all else you need luck combined with surgically precise good timing. History is full of performers who never won the movie's top prize despite plentiful contributions to the art of acting.

For the following list I'm ignoring outstanding performers who have never »

'Tron 2.0' Will Bring Back Young Jeff Bridges

4 February 2009 2:03 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

There's a plot to clone the young Jeff Bridges. Unfortunately, it won't be for general purchase (sorry Starman fans -- I know, having a Bridges of your own seems like a lot of fun, plus we would eventually have our own Dude), but for Tron 2.0.

io9 recently learned that a plaster cast of Bridges has been created and sent to Canada to be digitized. According to their secret source: "They will then take that 3D model and make him younger and then slap it on a body double in post. As this is only one cog in the machine, I can't give a whole lot of detail. Canada scans actors and props to be used for various projects. These are very high resolution scans that pick up every wrinkle, face lift and scar on the actors body."
