Residents of Nashville were quite excited about having a major motion picture company film segments of "Starman" inside of Davidson County. The scene involving the tanker explosion, in which the Starman uses his energy manipulation marble to walk out of the flames, was filmed at night at what is now one of Nashville's largest major intersections at Interstate 24 and Briley Parkway. Briley Parkway is now used as a four-lane bypass for large segments of the city, but in 1983, significant stretches of the highway continued to remain unbuilt until funding became available many years later. Even though the fuel tanker in the film appears to be traveling on a completed highway, the final explosion takes place just short of a complete dead end. The dead end of the Briley Parkway overpass was the perfect spot to film the segment because it had remained unfinished and unconnected by the Tennessee Department of Transportation. Unfortunate drivers who failed to take the I-24 exit found they were forced to make an awkward stop just short of a formidible and unpassable field of construction rubble. Once the area had been blocked off by Metro Police, the film crew was relatively unbothered by traffic passing into the area.
