Parents Guide for
Purple Rain (1984) More at IMDbPro »

The content of this page was created directly by users and has not been screened or verified by IMDb staff.
Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, that you instead use this feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes.
Visit our Parents Guide Help to learn more

Sex & Nudity

One scene depicts a sexual encounter between the leading characters. Another scene contains a very high level of erotic content as a woman is ogled in graphic fashion while in very racy underwear. At least two scenes contain topless female nudity. Woman wear very suggestive outfits. One song contains a direct reference to masturbation and also contains other rather overt sexual content. The leading character imitates sexual behavior while on-stage.

Violence & Gore

Spousal abuse is present. The leading character strikes his girlfriend. A suicide attempt is heavily implied, as the after effects are seen and the gunshot is heard.

Profanity

About 200 swear words heard in the film. Lots of f*ck, s**t, h*ll, d**m, twenty uses of the "n" word, ten uses of the "c" word, five uses of "w" word, and seven uses of the "T" word.

Since the plot revolves around band performances on the stage in the '80's club scene, alcohol usage is visible, as is smoking. There is no promotion of either in the film and any reference is entirely within context

Scenes containing abuse and the scene depicting a suicide attempt may be considered frightening by some viewers.
